A man with too many hobbies, he snobs away in his free time by drinking lots of coffee, a lovely pint of Guinness or the occasional dram of whiskey when there is something worth celebrating. The Best Thing for Writers? LOCHBY’s Field Journal Review
For the clamp, there was a company offering something called the 'book anchor' or something like that and they were psychos enough to make you pay over 50 dollars for it. It's literally just a music book clip and those are infinitely cheaper and do the same job as the anchor while also being lower profile for ease of storage.
That’s crazy! Glad I found a cheaper option. The Traveler’s Company one was 25 bucks and that’s too much for me. I’d just a binder clip instead.
@@alexanderwrites_ It was the "Page Anchor" - I paid about $25 for them and they are perfect in journals and holding books open when reading.
I saw an older video of yours, about the Quattro pen holder, I think I would give it a try! I have a leather pen case but it's a roll-up and it's not comfortable to take with you on the go. I will check the website now. Congrats on becoming an ambassador! So wonderful!
The roll-up is super nice. It can hold quite a bit of things, from pens to notebooks. I really enjoy mine! If you do decide to buy one, don’t forget to use my discount code ALEXANDERWRITES and save some money!
Best way to travel with a fountain pen is either with no ink at all, or with a totally full converter, with no air in it. Its the air that expands in flight, not the ink.
Hi Dear friend, so happy to see this video of yours, it was so interesting to see your set up and I always love to hear you talk about stationery. My set up is a bit different, I put only one notebook per cover, or two notebooks but never more (because they get so thick and chunky!). I loved how you set up your TN and it is so amazing to see how much you write! That made me so happy. I use Gel Pen from Rico Design for everyday journaling and I also love the Faber Castle pens, if you haven't tried them, give them a try! They have different nibs sizes and I just love how they make my handwriting look so polished and beautiful. The pens you use look amazing, I was blown away by the change in your writing from pen to pen. The uni pen made your handwriting looks so so so beautiful, like a beautiful classic font. Enjoyed this video so much! Enjoy your time in Ireland this summer!
You’re incredibly kind. Thank you for your well wishes and helpful insight. I have never heard of Rico Design or Faber Castle pens. I will have to try them out. And you’re absolutely right. Three notebooks in TN can make it very chunky, but I’ve found success somehow. I am still looking forward to your new videos when you get there again! Hope to speak again soon.
@@alexanderwrites_ Oh that is so sweet of you! I learnt about Faber Castell when I started drawing and quickly started using them for writing as well. Rico Design company is not a specific company for pens but their black gel pen is the perfect DUPE for those who can't order Muji pens (they're basically the same). I miss Traveler's Notebooks so much, hope to go back to writing in my journal real soon. Same with CZcams. If I come back to making videos, it will be because of the encouragement of amazing friends like you! Hopefully soon. P.S. I wrote you a letter! will send it really soon, I believe next week!
can a passport fit in the clear pocket thing?
If you mean putting a refill in that clear pocket, it won’t fit. They’re the exact same dimensions.
I love travelers and plotter
I like their blue too, it looks to me a denim colour.
Hi Alex--hope you are doing well. About 10 months ago, i checked your video. Has your experience changed, and, if so, how, since then with the Freewrite? Has the company addressed this issue? I'm still stunned that the company has had this problem with this device. Would you urge caution at this point in buying one of these things, setting the price aside?? Hope the book is going okay. Best!
This is a fantastic question! And thank you for checking back after your initial watch. I should really post an updated review to walk people through my thoughts about the Freewrite going forward. The company did address the issue and was able to recover part of the draft. However, part of it was lost. Being that the device I own is the original model, there are few things they could do. I believe the newer models have better technology and more support than their first iteration. As far as for someone thinking about a device like this, price aside like you mentioned, I would say I fully think this is an excellent product. It has been tremendously useful in developing my writing craft and I have seen real growth in building a daily habit. There are always ways to urge caution with any device used to write on. (Laptops crash, notebooks get lost, and data can become corrupted.) But having said that, this device is still a wonderful thing, I would recommend to anyone.
@@alexanderwrites_ thank you. All the best!!!
Came for the traveler’s notebook setup, left with Bible study podcast recs! Great video. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! 😊
I travel all over the world with a fountain pen You just need a vacuum or piston fill type However, I have also never had a problem with any TWSBI on a plane
Thanks for the information! I will look into this further. I have a TWSBI Go that is great, but I have never explored their other products.
If you want to travel with a fountain pen, you just need to keep it store upright with the nib facing upwards.
And this will prevent any leakage of ink? Including the pressure of airplane cabins?
@@alexanderwrites_ Yes, it definitely does. Just store your fountain pens upright and they'll be fine. No piston-type needed, though I have to admit, they are a bit more convenient when flying since you don't have to care.
I'm a fan of Lochby products. I'm intrigued regarding what's next from them!
Yeah, it will be interesting where the brand goes! Personally, a bag or backpack would be super cool.
If you wish to use fountain pens on your travels in the future look into a brand called Opus 88. They are japanese eyedropper style pens that have a shutoff stopper so ink from the main chamber cannot burp out when it is closed. Also they have a huge ink capacity so no extra ink supplies are needed when away from home.
This is incredibly helpful! Thank you so much 😊
What is the protrusion on the top left corner of the notebook when it is closed? Does in prevent the notebook from laying flat when open?
Are you referring to the green notebook? That is a pen clip and it is removable. If you’re referring to the Traveler’s Notebook, that is the zipper from the plastic pouch insert.
Great setup. Much neater than mine. Mine’s a mess. Great video!
Thank you! 😊
Congrats! I'm glad you love your Freewrite. Do you know which model you want to replace it with? I have the Traveler, and LOVE it so much. I've definitely found my fav way to draft. I bought mine in October, and since then I've drafted 1.5 novels on it, and am currently sitting at about 140k total words drafted on my device. I totally agree, it's definitely a convo started. Sometimes it's nice to chat to folks about my device, but usually I'm in the zone and just want to write! Haha. Have you thought about what model you want to get next to replace yours with? I would highly recommend the Traveler. Happy writing!
I have yet to try the traveler but it seems like a great device! I think I still have a couple years left in my Freewrite until it needs to be replaced but the traveler seems like a logical replacement. I do enjoy the idea of taking it with me places more often. The standard sized one makes that somewhat difficult. And it is a conversation starter for sure, sometimes to the point where I forget where the story was going next. Although I enjoy striking up conversations with complete strangers about it. So there’s positives and negatives to both.
@@alexanderwrites_ I hope your Freewrite lasts you another couple years, and you write many more thousands of words on it. I love my Traveler, and it's portability is one of my favorite features.
I agree with the comments below. We need more of this type of CZcams videos. In MHO journals/planners are not (at least for me) meant to be artwork or stickers. They are useful aids to record, write and plan
I just found you and enjoyed your video. Thank you
Welcome!
Congratulations on completing your novel. That's amazing. Quick question: Why would you need to retype everything into Scrivener? Why wouldn't it be a simple cut-and-paste operation? Is this just a process you have adopted for yourself, or is that something any writer would have to do?
It is just my own personal process. It helps me catch typos and edit while doing so.
Checking in a year later 🤷🏼♀️ I recently found Field Notes. I use the first half for the endless to-do lists. The second half is notes, reminders & whatever I want to remember. They are passport-size.
I always read like 10 books at a time too 😢
How pretty is your writing!
Thank you so much 🙂
It supports Tamil language or not ?
Not sure about this.
I would have chucked this useless object in the trash.
My main issue is the price. None of the models are appropriately priced for what a simple piece of machinery they are, niche product or not. They look cool, and seem like they’d be fun to write on, but it’s really hard to justify that much money in it.
hey i saw you are on 999 subscriber its been glad i found you random and i am going to be the one who will be completing your 1000 subscriber journey enjoy🥰
Thanks for subbing! You might be the 1,000th subscriber! 😊
@@alexanderwrites_ yeah m happy that I made your day. 🤩
@@alexanderwrites_ waiting for mine to complete its really hard now in CZcams wish me luck😃
I taught myself the underwriter method, it's worth the effort, but I sometimes I revert to sidewinder as I through the day.
I will definitely look into this!
Now I got to type them up lol.
Wow you written a lot of books lucky. My rough draft is done in a notebook.
So am I
Dude, that is not a minor setback -- that's a pretty big one! I would be so sad. Good for you for having a good attitude about it and moving on. This review was extremely helpful. I've been torn over whether to try the Freewrite. Honestly... I think something like this would stress me out, even though it is a beautiful machine. Maybe I'd try the Traveler for quick hit scenes on the go but wow. Thanks for the review!!
I’m glad you found it helpful! These devices have their flaws but they do also have a lot of advantages.
@@alexanderwrites_ Well said. Gotta get comfortable with it first. Congrats on your writing.
Thank you, best of luck to you!
Nothing is perfect. Hard lesson to learn. I had a corrupt zip drive and lost 2 years of poetry. That sucked but I'm over it now ...kind of. Trustworthy storage is just always a problem.
Nothing can beat good old pen and paper. Well… unless fire finds it 😅
Kobo! I must have my Kobo. While I love books, I have a medical involved daughter and I cannot beat the convenience of an e-reader. Books 24/7 and well, vomit and more happens that is why my son bought me the Kobo, easy and safe to clean.
Freewrite is a money grab. The fact that there isn't massive internal storage potential considering the bare bones nature of the device and the amount of storage one can fit into a small space these days, there is no excuse. Why are they storing to their cloud and syncing files? The fact that they are charging a monthly fee to have extra access to that storage and to transfer files back and forth is proof that their best interest is not in helping writers but in helping their pocket books. I will wait until someone comes up with a completely self contained device with a hard drive that can be accessed and manipulated by me without the company's "support".
Have you tried Nanami Seven Seas? It seems very similar, with more pages because of the lighter paper. The construction is just phenomenal as well. I like that they include the writing guides. I use Nanami Seven Seas Standards, which are blank, and I just jury rigged line guides for them. Shipping from Turkey does sting a bit.
I have never heard of Nanami Seven Seas but am very interested! I found their website and will have to find something to try out for a video! Thanks for your recommendation.
@@alexanderwrites_I genuinely think you’ll enjoy them as much as this one or more. It lies flat at the very first page, very last, and every page in between. The binding is just exceptionally done. They are made in Japan for Nanami.
A distraction-free alternative that I'm using is the reMarkable 2 with the Type Folio. It syncs with the app automatically and you don't have endless emails. Plus, it's a cheaper option and you can upload a PDF of a whole draft to mark up and correct (rather than print out) as well. So it has multiple uses.
Congratulations 🎉
Thank you! 😊
I'd never heard of this company. I will definitely be checking out that pen case! Congrats and thanks for sharing this info.
Thanks for watching! The pen case is amazing! Keeps all my fountain pens safe. 😊
How do you use their products? Would love a video showing you using them in your creative process, like some kind of asmr video! Love your vids☺

Hey Alexander! 🎉 Huge congrats on becoming our brand ambassador! We're stoked to have you on the team. It's such an honor for us! Can't wait to get updates on your newest novel! 😊
Thanks so much!! LOCHBY rules!! 😄
@@alexanderwrites_ ❤🔥

Their products are amazing! 😄
Cool! I purchased an olive green one yesterday and I’ll have it as my go to-notebook for the month long pilgrimage hike that I’ll do later this spring. Thank you for the video!
Hi, i'm crafting my own notebooks and genuine leather covers, i'm going through all youtubers And subscribing to all those thatt journal to see what theY like and hate in a notebook. i've subbed you for this review.
Does this allow an external monitor or iPad for viewing?
I do not believe so. You’d have to login to their online website to view work saved on your device.
Just bumping across this, but why would you buy and waste your time and words with such a horrific product?
I will admit, this product isn’t for everyone. Several products exist just like it and have found success, this ones seems to be finding the same thing. For me, the freewrite is a very niche product. I’ve gotten a great deal of enjoyment using it, but I understand the drawbacks (having experienced them myself). Having said all of that, I wouldn’t consider the product horrible by any means, but rather different. For those of us who have found enjoyment from the product, it can be hard to describe to those who haven’t used it yet. Hope this adds some clarity to a convoluted product.
LOL you sell a 500 dollars device and need to pay extra to put actual files ON it? And nobody boycotted this company yet or jailbroke the device? This must be the first case in existence of such positive sentiments towards such horrible consumer practices.
Three words. Optical character recognition. Software has gotten great about scanning text on hard copy and transfering it to a doc.
Why would you need to retype it into a computer when you can send the draft to the cloud and move it into a document that way?
This is my own practice. I use it as a way to proofread and edit while I retype the draft into word. You can certainly do what you suggested.
@@alexanderwrites_ Ah! Understood, I was concerned you'd missed one of the features of the device haha
I can't see why you would spend 700 plus on a FreeWrite, when you can buy a chromebook or laptop for two hundred and keep the internet turned off.
honestly you could just as easily just get a $30 HP stream laptop, install Linux, and setup syncthing, and install a distraction-free writing app. you create a folder and it has file versioning, and you get the same file no matter if you're using your phone or your desktop, any time the device is on an internet connection. an HP stream is too slow for the internet but it's just fast enough to where you're not waiting to open a document, and it's so low power than you still get 6 hours battery 10 years after the laptop was sold. plus this option is free monthly, cheaper, and you still get a decent keyboard, and you don't look weird for pulling out a massive typewriter.
There's a free app called FocusWriter that runs on a potato and provides a fullscreen distraction-free writing experience. it also saves directly into ODT format so you can open it with libreoffice, or to a .DOC or TXT.
