Stuttering therapist reacts to Trump's mocking stuttering
zhlédnutí 196Před 2 měsíci
These are my thoughts as a stuttering therapist (speech therapist) on recent mocking of stuttering from former President Donald Trump. Short story, it's not okay. It's destructive. It reinforces shame and humiliation, both which actually cause the problem and damage regarding stuttering. If a physical attack on someone can send you to jail then certainly there should be some consequence when on...

Not sure specifically what you mean by an online 1:1 chat... :) I do Zoom therapy 1:1 sessions with clients that I'm licensed in their state....CT, MA, NY, NJ, FL, and CA. I start with an initial consultation which clients book through my website...where we get to know each other and see what a good plan is moving forward...1:1 session, group therapy session, group retreat... I do have some resources on my website in my store as well. I have plans for an online video program but have been too busy to get to that yet! I like to share info on CZcams as well and IG just to get free info out there that hopefully has a positive impact for those who stutter and helps those who are in need of hope.

Learning how to create and do stutters on purpose. It's not your real stuttering, but sometimes it can turn real. The difference is you initiate it. You are choosing it. This sends a message to your brain that it is safe. It's the opposite of avoidance... As is choosing to allow real true stutters. It helps desensitize oneself to stuttering also. Not everyone uses or likes this tools, but some find it incredibly helpful. Again intention is key. You don't use it to avoid stuttering or as a trick... The intention is to own it, desensitize, teach your brain it's safe to stutter. When one is approaching their stuttering with this philosophy, the only way out is through.

While I do think Biden is also getting much older and I think depending on the individual your brain starts to decline gradually, consequently making more speech errors that may just be coincidental, he still stutters periodically. He's stuttered since he was a child and while you may be a great speech maker with a 50-year long career in Washington, the stuttering doesn't completely go away. There's no cure for it; it will pop up again from time to time. And someone with a highly inflated ego just mocking someone's stutter is not alright. It does have an emotional impact on someone who stutters, which is why people who stutter come to people like you for therapy. It feel like when we're born, we're born with this burden that we probably have to carry for the rest of our lives. And mocking and teasing someone for it makes the situation worse. So while you may disagree with Biden politically (like I do from the left, and especially with the Israel-Hamas conflict, it's almost completely turned me off from him), you should still personally respect someone who has at least made a political career despite being a covert stutterer.

Thanks for sharing! People who stutter as children, with the right support from home or speech therapist stuttering specialists, I often see have to grow up sooner. They "get" to learn big lessons in life early on about self- acceptance, how to respond to others who notice this different way of talking and ask about it or respond in various ways. They often have to learn how to stand up for themselves very early and learn about what is going on with their talking because they also notice this difference and becoming comfortable with it or not...starts very early. A lot has to go right to come out flourishing, but it is possible!

I completely agree with your opinion. I am a adult person who stutter living in South Korea. Over 20 years ago, a member of the National Assembly mocked and mimicked the stuttering of the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, who stuttered. The other parliamentarians in the room laughed out loud. It was very disgusting and embarrassing. Thank you.
