Hey there!
Welcome to my channel, The Nature Patch where I like to share all things gardening, cooking, environmental science and flower farming in my Australian bushland backyard in south coast NSW.
My name is Robyn, an environmental scientist, and flower farmer. I have recently completed my PhD in understanding how people's wellbeing and their connection to nature is impacted by land use change but now I'm taking a break from research to pursue a dream of owning a flower farm. I've always loved gardening and nature and lately have been interested in growing my own organic food!
On this channel you'll find videos relating to garden tours, 'how to' videos, composting, soil health and how to start a flower farm.
I try to upload twice a week and I hope you enjoy!!
🤎 Filmed and edited on Yuin country. I acknowledge and pay respects to Traditional Owners of the land past, present and emerging. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.

In today's video I'm sharing how I prune hydrangeas, plant society garlic and share a little update on how some of our veggie seedlings are growing. Unfortunately for some of the brassicas, there isn't much good news to share! Between the slugs and birds, a lot of them have been eaten but I'm determined ...

    The problem with these westerlies is that it has really dried out the top of the ground. Still too cold, even though my peas have emerged they seem to have stalled. Unfortunately, the satin birds are starting to eye them off. Just wondering where are you getting your vermiculite from? Bishops?

    • @thenaturepatch
      @thenaturepatch Před 11 dny

      So true about the westerlies! I’ve had to start watering a little even despite all that rain. I picked up the vermiculite from Bunnings as I only needed a small bag, but get my perlite from bishops to buy in bulk as I use more of it ☺️

  • @FNobody
    @FNobody Před 16 dny

    If you successfully stopped the decomposition process in your compost bin, go and take your Nobel Prize. The only thing - it's sad if you decomposed sooner than your compost bin. Buy don't worry - life will not be stopped.

  • @FNobody
    @FNobody Před 16 dny

    so... if you are composting meat, you're breeding organisms witch decomposing animal tissue - so obviously they can start decomposing you. Right? If you're composting plants, you're breeding organisms witch decomposing plants tissue - so obviously if compost not done and these organisms presented, they can start to decomposing your plants. But if you put them just on top of the soil, they will not harm your plants, because they will be dead after that drastic change of environment and ultraviolet.

    Thanks for the video. I’m in a household of 2 and looking to start an enclosed compost bin outside. Just logistically, could I fill the bin to the top and then as it decomposes/reduces keep adding more food scraps and carbon layers? Or once it’s full to the top are you meant to let it do its thing and aerate it while you fill a separate bin? I see a lot of people online having 2 bins so they can do that. I just want to start with 1 but want to be able to top it up every few weeks with household food scraps…

    I tried the beer traps but found they were not doing as well as I hoped. The evaporation of the beer/cost to keep filling was not really viable. The best thing that worked for me is going out after dark with a head torch and just picking them off manually. I got SO many in just a couple of nights. I have been doing it every few days now and noticing less and less each time.
