I love everything about this album. Especially the song "u". One of the most relatable i've ever listened to. Kendrick Lamar’s “u” talks a lot about his internal and also external battles. When Lamar says, “loving you is complicated.” I believe he is talking to himself but is also quoting how others feel about him as well. The external battle is shown a lot in the second verse when he says, “A friend never leave Compton for profit or leave his best friend little brother, you promised you’d watch him before they shot him, where was your antennas, on the road bottles and bitches..” This part of the second verse highlights the external battle a lot. Leaving Compton for profit is what Kendrick had to do because of touring and business, but his friends think he’s leaving them. This is a stretch but I believe that a friend of Kendrick asked him to watch over his little brother. Asking where he was when his little brother got shot and Kendrick is hurt beside he was on the road partying and performing instead of watching his little brother. This is all a stretch but it’s what his lyrics say to me. 🖤🐛🦋🎧🎼

Okay guys, this is my first time actually sitting down an listening to an album completely, this being my first experience I literally broke down at Mother I Sober and Mirror, I only live with my Dad, he’s tough but caring, caring enough that he guides me through life and one thing he always says to me especially since I graduated is “everything you do is for you and only you, please don’t forget that” and man…”I chose me, I’m sorry” just…my god I was ascending yet felt the weight of those words. I love my father so much for showing that caring for yourself isn’t a selfish act, it’s a choice that’s always available, it’s only up to you to know when to make that choice.

I recommend you react to his "The Heart series" pt 1-5 they capture his growth as an artist and a man. Definitely some of his best work.

I know I'm late to this but I'm glad to see another person recognize the Philip Glass vibes coming off this album. The way he frames his emotions with the soft instrumental tracks reminds me of the spoken verses in some of PG's works.

my first time finding your channel, and great breakdown! one thing that i've really gotten out of this beef is kendrick has really forced me to LISTEN to what an artist is saying. too many times in the past i've been caught up in how hard a beat sounds rather than the substance of it. Actually I think the fact that you were disconnected from the appeal of “Not Like Us” actually makes a lot of sense, no disrespect. Kendrick is using a regional sound that is particular to his stomping grounds, but makes a connection to all black Americans. The us in question is us, black Americans, who understand across the country how we have been alienated and at the same time profited off of. Everyone wants our rhythm but can’t take our blues. Kendrick is specifically calling out Drake with something he can’t connect to, even though his father is black American and he tries to get a pass by using the Atlanta trap sound.

something important is how duckworth starts with “let’s put it in reverse” listening to the album in reverse order somewhat recontextualizes and shifts the understanding and you can tell that’s not just a fluke due to it being on spotify in reverse order (DAMN. COLLECTORS EDITION) to be able to readily listen to it that way it’s also the reason duckworth ends with the reversing noise and the beginning of blood
