    Hey Bill, my old man is in the 50th edition copy of Freshwater Fishing with a brown from Purrumbete. He bought a soft copy at the newsagency and then when we went to the boat show (maybe in 2000?) you had a hard copy which he ofcorse has too :) He was trolling a celta (gold with green), Id have to ask him is he was downrigging.

    Hi. What transducer was used in this video to display the 2D Sonar image? From 3.40, you mentioned “standard sonar cannot locate wonky holes…”. Can you elaborate on this? I thought what was being showed was actually standard 2D Sonar? Cameron

    • @AFNFishingOutdoors
      @AFNFishingOutdoors Před 15 dny

      Hi Cameron. The transducer was the new ActiveImaging HD 3-in-1 FishReveal Transducer. The transducer provides 2 types of sonar. The first is traditonal downward sonar which displays the bottom under the boat (and any fish in the water cloumn). This sonar is 2D and uses "High Chirp". This "traditional" 2D, downward-shooting sonar only reveals what is under the boat, therefor you need to actually drive over a wonky hole, or a reef etc before you can identify it, so naturally, this can be very time consuming. The transducer also has "sidescan" which sends a signal out on either side of the boat, so it catches the contours of the seabed from the side. So, much like shining a torch out to your side while walking in the dark, you can see so much more than if you shone the torch directly down at your feet. Fopr example, you could set the sidescan at 30 metres each side of the boat, so that gives you 60 metres of coverage when searching for reef or wonky holes. Note that the transducer sends out both types of sonar at the same time and you can display them both at the same time on a split screen, along with your GPS map.

    Hi. Once snapper arches are seen on the sounder, and then spending time to motor back to near GPS mark, waiting for anchor to drop and then for boat to settle, etc… how likely will those observed snapper still be in that same location as previously marked?

    • @AFNFishingOutdoors
      @AFNFishingOutdoors Před 15 dny

      If the snapper are actively feeding at that spot, they will still be there. Obviously the only way to find out is to anchor-up and have a go!

    I used to catch very large numbers of large Thread Fin Salmon over a meter long in the River down stream of Brisbane in the very early 80s onward. They have always been there but research has increased leading to the belief they were not there before. There used to be far more variety & size of fish in the Brisbane river systems prior to shallow reef damage South of the River Mouth due to coral mining, long term damage from close in trawling damaging sea grass areas & the development of Port of Brisbane removed or damaged grassy flats which had abundance of large prawns, many species dispersed or became smaller in general after its creation. But of course angling became more popular & everyone has a boat with a fish finder now so its no wonder fish stocks have been effected by this over the decades. The construction of Port of Brisbane made more habitat for larger species like Cod, Groper & Jew, & we have seen many changes in the river fish in the last 20 years.

    Unfortunately where I live there's an air port near by so I can't fly my drone Big schools of mulloway would concentrate in the really hot weather under a local jetty near by the mouth of a river About 40 to80cm but one on top of the other at a guess 80 to 100 fish if not more. The following year the beach had some well formed gutters and a couple of nicely formed deep holes, it reminded me of when I was 14 years old and we would catch mulloway just of our local beach It made me keen. I had crabbers tell me there's fish out there just chilling ,paddle boarders as well were seeing them in big numbers. That summer I fish hard and it paid off 30 fish over a 3 month period but not much for the first 2weeks but I worked it out in the end spending 2 to 3 hours and then home one night got 4 105 to 109cm On the average most fish were 78 to 92cm a year never to be forgotten my son would say the same . But what really sticks in my mind I went down one night at about 4am but the weed was to much as I was packing up to go I got a massive whiff of mulloway just like we used to get at the Murray mouth when they were thick they would rub up on each other the sweetest smell ever There must of been hundreds Seen them one afternoon while checking out the water as you do could see a massive school of mullet about 50m off shore getting herded by the big shadows I watched the school get smaller and smaller for about two hours till there was no school to be seen any more . I've seen them work with dolphins herding big schools of salmon on the south Coast of Adelaide Its good to see that they have made a return in good numbers
