[BMW R 1300 GS] Riding my New BMW R 1300 GS for the First 500 kilometres. MOTO VLOG. Problems?
I think the headlight on this GS is simply incredible. Especially if you have the cornering matrix LED headlight, so do you. Can’t you tell it illuminates very well?
Yeah I think it’s a great headlight and I have the matrix led cornering headlight. Lights up an extra section once you lean a little. I might just need to make a small adjustment to bring the high beam down a little, other than that perfect.
I recommend a small two person tent. They make some that will fit in the panniers. Don’t get a one person because you will hate not having room when it rains. A good small sleeping bag, an inflatable mattress. Cooker for coffee of some soup, and something to cook in. I would recommend something with two pots so your coffee doesn’t taste like chicken soup. All this can be bought at Decathlon. I have been using aluminium panniers on my Triumph, but have a complete set od SW-MOTCH DUSC panniers ready for the BMW, if it ever arrives.
That's a good tip about the tent, nothing worse that being crammed in a tiny place while raining and trying to change clothes. But what if I like my coffee alla chicken. 😂😂😂 I will got to check out Decathlon sometime soon. Cheers for the tips mate and I hope your bike arrives soon 🤞🤞🤞
which nav app do you use? :)
Hey mate, I use Pocket Earth. Very simple free app where you upload a gpx file and just follow the line. Not the greatest but not the worst. 😁
Thanks Mate 😊@@BavarianBloodhound1
Being a fellow Aussie, I won’t list my trails - the GS is a do anything machine, although it can’t quite ride on water 🤣 However! I’d be keen to hear where you’re from and your trails 😎
@Tragedy-h9w I'm from the Gold Coast, but most of the trails I rode were in nsw. Duck creek road is a good one but will only take you an hour to do. pretty gully road into rocky river road is my absolute favourite, difficulty level of zero but very nice fast flowing dirt road with great scenery and very good camping so bring a tent. Old Grafton road is another like that. Then there is the Kempsey/Armidale road, very nice road with lots of cliff edges to look over. It's been maybe 3 years since I have ridden any of these so hopefully they are still how I remember. The Barrington tops is an area I have seen and heard a lot of good things about but I never ventured down that way unfortunately. All the trails I listed are good for all bikes big and small. I hope this helps you in your quest for dirt, (hopefully your not in perth) 😂 although I'm pretty sure there is some killer trails over there as well. Cheers for the support mate. 👍
@@BavarianBloodhound1that’s epic - thanks for sharing! 🤘

Hello, you should try to put your butt back over the rear wheel in the deep sand sections. And more throttle helps as well. Stunning landscapes and good riding 💯
Thanks for the tips mate.👍 I really enjoyed this ride too. Cheers for the support.😁
I think a little training day would be fun to watch. Like you training the elephant turns. Hops for trees. Etc. That would be great to see(not evereyday is a cool trail day)
Yeah ok. 👍 I will work on something like that for a future video. Cheers mate.
Looks a lot of fun and good mix of terrain. Great vid 👌
It is quite nice on these trails. Cheers mate👍
There is an incredible 1.5 km (if lucky) trail 25km away from me. That's it. And no, it is not really incredible😅. If you want to do trail riding, don't come to Germany. Especially not southern Germany. There are apparently some trails in east Germany, former tank roads, but that is it. Road riding is beautiful here though. I will need to go to Italy and Slovenia if I want to ride anything legal and I will most likely start doing it next year. This year is for getting back into riding and getting to know my 1300 properly. I don't have any experience off road, but there is a big BMW enduro park close to me as well as an enduro track and trail bike track as well. So I probably will need to get a smaller bike to practice there, since I can't ride anywhere close to my home legally. Yes, I do sing occasionally as well. Either under the helmet or in my head at home or work. Nothing weird😁
Unfortunate about the trails near you but I can imagine the roads are sublime. you will need to scout them out and give me the best recommendations 😁. good to know Im not the only one singing and I'm not crazy.🤪
@BavarianBloodhound1 Yeah, I started exploring already, but I have to wait for the 1000km service on Thursday. After that, I can ride a bit more. I am using calimoto a lot for finding nice roads. Works well so far. I was wondering if you have switched your navigation app for the trails yet?
Cali Moto seems pretty good for finding nice routes. 👍 I haven’t changed apps yet. Still kind of checking others out but for now pocket earth is doing the job. Why do you ask? Did you find a good one?
@BavarianBloodhound1 just wondering since you asked a while ago, and I just wanted to check. I did mention DMD2, but I haven't used it myself yet, so I can't really recommend or comment on it.
Yes. All the time. It's a symphony of my thoughts in my helmet when I'm riding.
🤣🤣 Very good. Not just me.
Nice video. Watch out for those branches
Will do. Thanks 😊
A branch will always find a way to smack you in the face... When I was riding TET in Croatia, we were riding in the ''hard'' section somewhere near the coast and there's a part where you are riding on a tiny trail with trees and bushes everywhere around you and I was doing my absolute best to not get hit but them my Honda decided I should get hit right in the face by a branch, so she caught a branch with her front wheel and launched it right into my face... Good times...
Haha. Very good times, they are the rides you remember. 👍👍
I live in NL and I’m also searching for some trails but it’s harder than I thought to find something legal.
Yeah it can be difficult to find. That’s why I like when someone has already scouted out some good trails.
Also living in NL the tet is okay but nothing like this and some dirt parkinglots ans service roads doesnt get better than that
That’s unfortunate about the trails near you. But it gives you an excuse to go on a bike trip somewhere else.😀
Great video like always.👍👍
Cheers mate. Thanks for the support 👍
Hi Dude, I'll get my 1300 in a couple of weeks, your vids give me passion, energy and footwork until then. Would love to have a shared ride some day. You should also check out touratech active adventure in September.
Nice. Which version did you go for? Glad you’re enjoying the videos mate. I would be keen for a ride. Any weekend works for me. Just send a msg and I’m in. I will check out the event for sure.👍
👍
👍
Decathlon had a pretty cheap tent thats really easy to setup and tear down. And if you ride off road definetly soft panniers
And pack as lightly as possible. Do you really need 6 shirt and 3 pants or can you manage with less
Thanks I will check it out.
Yeah good tips, bike is already heavy enough
I was in Estonia last week. Great place, didn't hear any heavy breathing. 😎 Greetings from South Australia
I was there last week. Estonia was great. Greetings from South Australia . Didn't hear any heavy breathing. 😀

@@BavarianBloodhound1 Yes back now Euro trip visiting family and friends in Latvia.
Nice. Hope you enjoyed it mate👍
i rode mine at night and was a bit confused ..a very definite and clear main beam , but when you put high beam on it leaves a distinct dark patch between the two ..
Yeah I think I need to adjust my lights a little bit because the high beams seem to be to far up.
Always more exciting o drive in the evening / night. Head lamp is very grateful

Estonia looks lovely. Nice ride out in the dark. I drive trucks for a living in the UK. I work only nights. Love seeing all the wildlife at night at the farms I deliver too.
It is quite nice here, a little bit flat but still nice. The wildlife is great to see just as long as it doesn’t jump out in front of you. 😱

Lovely evening road travel 🙂
Highly recommend Lone Rider soft panniers, particularly for the GS since it’s what it was designed for. If (when) the bike goes on its side, they absorbs the impact, and they’re actually water/dust proof with an inner bag. I use them on my 1250 GSA and would not go with another brand.
Is that the semi rigid version or full soft. Or do they only do one type? The bike definitely goes over.🤣 often. Thanks for the info mate. 👍
@@BavarianBloodhound1 Ah! Semi-rigid! They hold their shape like hard panniers, but on its side they act as soft 😋
Cheers mate👍
Nicely saved. Time for some better tyres. Great vid
cheers mate. on the way👍
Nice recovery. Lucky your battery hung in there.
It was good that I was able to capture the moment. 😁
Hey dude, nice save! 😄 I camp off a 1250GS and would say there's a couple of things I wish I'd known going in: - I'd go soft panniers rather than hard, mainly just because they'll do a lot less damage to you if (hopefully never) you drop the bike and your leg is between the ground and the pannier. With hard panniers you'll wear the whole weight of the bike and panniers, with soft you'll get a bit of give. Plus, if you do drop them they're less likely to be permanently damaged. I'd go rackless on the panniers too if you can, so something like the Mosko Moto Reckless 40s or 80s, or the giant loop equivalents. - For tents look for bikepacking tents, mainly because they tend to have shorter tent poles which will fit in motorbike panniers easier. There's a good youtube channel, @DorkintheRoad, who does a lot of motocamping content and has some playlists about good gear. For kit, there's a motocamping specific web store, motocampnerd.com/. It's US only, so the rest of us are out of luck, but it will give you a good idea of what gear to grab. Hope that helps. If you're ever back in Aus, check out the tracks at the back of the Brindabella ranges near Canberra. Nice mix of great views and steep slightly technical fire trails.
Wow, what a workout taking that great big bike on that skinny trail. That narrow trail would have been a blast on a little 250 pound 250cc. Your brave taking your bike on it.
It was a workout 🏋️ but I don’t know if brave is the right word.🤣
I plan to get the original BMW side cases, and top case. Even though I prefer soft luggage, just love the new vario BMW setup. Simple, good quality and central locking, extendable with USB and light. Integrated in the frame, once you take them off. Like nothing left to ruin the frame. Can’t resist that .
I have to agree that they seem very user friendly and I do like that nothing is left behind.
Ok cool when you come to Croatia, we hit the TET afterwards we can plan I come to Estonia and even without my bike, you can rent me one. 😊😊
🤔🤔🤔 Perhaps you have given me an idea 💡 Stay tuned 😁
I recommend soft panniers! Yes thats my favorite part Of TET Estonia too. Damn that hill is so much steeper in real life that the camera shows. That hill is more difficult than the track is wet, be careful:) Lets do something together sometimes. Thumbs up for the video, Love it!!!!!
Thanks @madmatz2112 I’m glad someone knows why I was worried about going up that hill, because on camera it doesn’t look steep at all. Cheers mate. I would be keen to go for a ride with you for sure. 👍
you need some decent 50/50 tires on that big boy
Yes sir I do. 😂 any recommendations?
@@BavarianBloodhound1 haven't tested many tires myself unfortunately. Michelin anakee wild seems like a popular recommendation, but they are expensive. But I can say that Metzeler karoo 4 doesn't last at all, they completely disintegrated in only 2000 miles on my Tuareg 660. If you can get them cheap, they are awesome, but they don't last.
Ok that’s a good note for me because Karoo 4s is what I was going to get. But if they don’t last long maybe I need to rethink. Thanks mate.👍
I would go for a lone rider adv tent a bit expensive but seems ok. Panniers depends how big you want and if you want soft or hard. I guess soft as it seems to drop the bike often so my setup for 1300 would be bars from touratech then either mosko Moto or lone riders 31 Liter ones with the back saddle you have I don’t think the rackless from mosko would fit
Ok sounds good. I was also thinking soft panniers 😂 Thanks for the info mate. I will check them out. Cheers
If you ever do southern Estonia tet, I would love to join you on my 1250gs. Also if you have not yet gotten your connected cradle I have one that I have not put on the market. I replaced mine with the connected gps device.
Thanks mate I need a riding buddy when I head down that way. Soon 😉 Would be great to see a fellow GS on the trails. Don’t hold the cradle just for me but if when I come down your way you still have it maybe we can do a deal. 👍 Cheers mate.
We have same build - so I'd get some Klim Latitude pants 1st - get the short ones becasue the regular are a mile long (im 6'3" and got short) . Mosko Moto soft Panniers, Lone Rider tent, Big Agnes inflatable pad / sleeping bag. the rest of stuff basic cooking/food etc. dont forget a thermocell or mosquito face net. Once you've camped a few times and youre tired of being stiff and crappy sleep - You'll probably just pick a hotel 1/2 way out on a trip - you'll have a new town to talk about, what/ where to eat etc. watch an NEBDR if you havent already, you'll see what i mean. '
Thanks for all the info mate. Now I have a direction for my research. 🧐 Cheers
Kudos, you handled that slide like a pro 👌
cheers mate I was in shock at first, really thought I was going to go flying off into the bushes.
Enjoyed the video, Keep riding safe.
Thanks mate. 👍 Will do
i think this shows well that the big "adventure" bikes are a failed concept. For the average joe theyre about as manouverable in rough terrain as grandma. The GS is a great bike, very good quality. I just think the concept is 95% tourer and 5% offroad capabilities and what are you gonne do with that? Things that you can "adventure" through like the tet are just barely possible and a MASSIVE pain compared to doing it on a smaller enduro.
@movelikejaeger1914 So, first of all please understand that I respect your opinion and I'm not trying to attack you with my comments I think "failed concept" is not correct. this bike was never marketed to do single trail, It was for wide open 2 track, gravel/dirt/sandy roads and yes to the majority of its market road riding. In saying that this trail is nowhere near out of its league, I simply have the incorrect tires for it. In fact when it dries up a bit I will return to this section and blow through it like nothing. Of course I would still be much slower than a proper enduro or motocross bike but that is also the case for lets say a T7. I quite enjoy the challenges of a big bike on these smaller trails and will look at improving my own skills to better handle these situations. As you will see with my other videos I don't think that I have "just barely" made it through the tet trails here in Estonia and I absolutely will be doing tet trails in all the countries I visit. Anyway, not attacking you, just opininating (if thats a word) 😂. Hope you enjoy the trails on whatever it is you ride mate. cheers for the comment 👍👍👍 Happy trails.
@@BavarianBloodhound1 All good man! I think its awesome you take the challenge. People tour the world on 125cc, 2 wheels can be great fun way out of the comfort zone. And i think you surely didnt make a bad choice with the gs. Maybe i just dont like the naming of the "adventure" bike class. To me adventures start when these heavy adventure bikes go out of their comfort zone. If it has adventure in the name but muddy/wet becomes a concern i cant help but chuckle a bit haha
Yesterday, I finally got my 1300 as well. Was supposed to arrive in July but they currently ramped up the production of the 1300s. Of course, today it started raining and seems like rain for the rest of the weekend. On the flip side, I can´t drive much anyway, because my first service will be in 2 weeks, so that is a limitation. At least I still have time to watch your videos 😛
So good @Wollestar I was crossing my fingers for it to arrive early 🤘 just be sure to take it easy before the first service. No crazy wheelies and whatnot 😉 I think 1000km is a good target for first service unless they told you otherwise. I think it was meant to be between 600 and 1200km. You can always watch my videos as well as ride your bike 😂. Happy riding champ, I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine
@BavarianBloodhound1 they told me 800-1000. Yeah, I don't think that I will do a wheelie ever on that bike🤣. That would mean I would have to know how to in the first place😅. But I used the good weather on Thursday for a small tour and I absolutely love that thing already. As mentioned some videos ago, I have a similar bike to yours, but I went for the forged wheels. It will be interesting to see how they hold up. They look really good, though.
Yeah I think they look pretty good also. I bet they will be stronger and better than cross spoked, but time will tell.
Great work - that looked pretty challenging!
Thanks mate.👍 could hear it by how much I was breathing 😮💨
Those things ain’t made for trails…they can barely hang on easy dirt roads. Just sayin; don’t be fooled by German marketing or over-engineering. My suggestion is to get a KLR…you can work on it by the side of the road, go into town to get parts for broken BMWs, find parts worldwide, and use the 10K you saved to get a KLX, for when you want hard Singletrack. Just sayin…But to each their own. Other good non-car options are Honda XL650 or Suzuki DR650.
While those bikes are good suggestions, I wouldn’t trade this for anything. I love taking this bike off-road and actually so far the only limiting factor is my skill level not the motorcycles ability to conquer trails. Hope you enjoy riding whatever bike you ride mate, just as long as your riding.👍
With good knobby rubber and cylinder protection gs is amazing on single trail. How you can put it first gear and let go the clutch and gas and it tractors on at least my 1250.
That slick mud has to be extra fun on those street tires!
Sure was. 😂
I think you would enjoy the TET a lot more if you did it on a smaller bike. Adventure bikes are not suitable for trail riding. Unless you are big and very strong and have lots of talent. Oh and very rich to pay for all the damage.
Yeah maybe, But I love my bike and will be trying to become a better rider on it. Hopefully I won’t break too much of it because I'm definitely not rich😂 What do you ride @peterwhalley6491 ?
@@BavarianBloodhound1 No I have the greatest respect for anyone trying to trail ride on an adventure bike. I am now an old man and ride a Beta 300 X trainer, previously I had a Honda crf 250 L and not only did alot of damage to it but had a bad accident where I broke my leg and damage a wrist and shoulder.
That’s unfortunate you had a crash mate. Never fun. I say you gotta get out there on whatever you feel comfortable on and hell if I saw someone on a 50cc moped trying to conquer the trails I would be cheering them on. Cheers mate👍
@@BavarianBloodhound1 Beta Xtrainer 300, purley used for trail riding.
Man you are a legend for where you take that bike. Proving that big bikes can go places albeit being hard work, I can hear it in your breathing. I know some people may say this is not what the bike is designed for but I can say it certainly adds to the adrenaline rush and feels good after the fact 🙂 Regarding the lift I also find it easier the way you do it unless I travel with other in which case it's easier to get help. Did you let your tyres down for this trip?
Haha cheers mate. I had the tires at 1.9 front and 2.2 bar rear.27-32 psi(normally 2.5f & 3.0R) But these tires are rubbish as soon as there is any mud about.
I gotta give you credit for hitting the bush in such a nice bike. I would baby it if it was mine. Could even shed a tear if i scratched it
😂 I sometimes cry myself to sleep after I have dropped the bike out on the trail.😭 But I’m using it for its intended purpose I suppose so hopefully the bike isn’t angry with me. Cheers for the support mate👍
Tom, are you still on the road tyres? Flip em, your crash bars will thank you😂
🤣🤣 they probably would. Will be the next thing I buy for the bike for sure
Elephant doesn’t belong to ballet. That’s all.
Definitely not when the floor is wet 🤣🤣
Great vid. When are you going to get some better tires for the mud? I think you'll surprise yourself with how much more stable you'll be on the bike. I used to do a lot of off road riding as a kid and more nobbly tires were perfect to thoses conditions.
Depends how stubborn I feel like being 🤣🤣🤣 I think it’s the next thing I buy for the bike so possibly soon.
