After lunch we headed right to the central part of Terceira to go to Algar do Carvão, one of the few places in the world where we can go inside a volcano. We got to see the volcanic chimney and the "cave" that was formed when the lava was trying to escape to the surface. The Algar do Carvão (Cavern of Coal) is an ancient lava tube or volcanic vent located in the central part of the island of Terceira in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores.
