    When working on watches with Radium one of the first things to consider are gloves. Next would be ventilation. Then face mask. My biggest worry was you were handling the material without wearing rubber gloves or at least finger cotts. Very informative, thanks. Good Fortunes, Great Successes and Many Blessings 🤝

    Awesome piano. Can't wait to see what it sounds like when it's completely restored including the bass strings. I am from Grand Rapids Michigan and I know that they were originally built in GR before the company was moved to Muskegon by Charles Hackley. Have you looked into restoration?

    Interesting. Either there are differences between the old and new tools or perhaps yours has been modified? The spring on mine, the Star/Bergeon, doesn’t grip the spindle towards the top like yours, it loosely slides along the spindle hence it will not push the spindle up when the micrometric cap is attached. What makes the spring to grip the spindle?

    • @hugeshows
      @hugeshows Před 3 měsíci

      On mine, there is a small groove milled around the circumference of the plunger, about half a cm from the top. That groove has a wire ring snapped into it, which the spring engages. The spring never touches either the top for the lever or the micrometer.

    In the 60's we used to buy what was called "luminous" paint, and make skeletons and skulls of cardboard and paint it on for fun, to frighten people, but it didn't contain any radium, only zinc sulphide and some other phosphors which are harmless. It's quite easy to tell the difference as luminous paint fades quite quickly after exposure to light whereas radium keeps on glowing. I always wanted to get some as a child, but I'm rather glad I didn't now!

  • @c0ba1t
    @c0ba1t Před 4 měsíci

    I have an old radium compass that measures 500,000 CPM. Compete with that! lol. Although I have scintillation detector, which is more sensitive than a geiger counter.

    • @c0ba1t
      @c0ba1t Před 4 měsíci

      It measures my background radiation in the house at >300CPM, due to radon, x-rays, and uranium and thorium in the soil and bricks on the house. I know this because the scintillation detector can not only measure CPM like a geiger counter, but it can also identify what isotopes are causing the radiation.

    • @c0ba1t

      Americium 241 also shows up a lot due to the smoke detectors in the house.

    Q750 is listed as a 2SC1885, which should be a TO-92(L) case, however the one I'm working on (as was yours) is a TO-126 which I can't ID because the heat has dulled the case so much. I'm going to try to find a more robust replacement since I'm still in the middle of repairing this. Marantz receivers are not the most repair-friendly.

    Interesting video. I've always loved watches and recently started dabbling with vintage watches. I bought a small bag of old broken watches from someone and started tinkering. It's fascinating learning about a watch and its movement as you fix it. In that process however, I noticed one of them said "ra SWISS MADE ra" on the dial. That put me into a rabbit hole of terror now. I've put them all in tins and away from my work station and ordered a Geiger counter which will be here tomorrow. But I spent a few hours partially tearing down some of these watches oblivious to any dangers. I mean... they're just watches, right? Apparently not. Anyways, I'm hoping for the best when the counter comes in the mail, but I may have just eaten a few years off my life. 😷😢 Lesson learned...

  • @lucyindisquisewithdiamonds4614

    Thanks for the video! I had the problem with the turntable drive bets, except my belts had somehow melted. I hadn't used the turntable in many years since I now mostly listen to mp3s of all my music. I had to remove the turntable to properly clean up the melted rubber from the drive pulleys. Rubbing alcohol and Q-tips did an excellent job although the job was meticulous and time consuming. I had a problem with the discs spilling out after reassembly. The problem was that the tabs on the turntable shield in the back of the unit actually penetrate the frame. My work surface did not allow the cd changer to sit flat and the tabs pushed back out of the frame openings. I never would have thought that Sony would have created a situation where the shield cound be pushed loose simply by setting the cd changer on an uneven surface.

    I just discovered that I have owned, for about 4 years, a most likely radioactive Soviet tank clock. The watch was WITHOUT GLASS. I kept the watch mostly in a cardboard box, in a wardrobe drawer, near the underwear and clothes I wear every day. I don't know what level of radiation we're talking about because I don't have the instrument to measure it. What about the other wristwatches (without radio) that were kept in the same box, will they be contaminated? Should I worry? Do you have any general advice for me?

  • @Jordanmilo
    @Jordanmilo Před 7 měsíci

    I'm so glad to hear someone finally tell the truth about the construction of the 2238B. I've had mine since new in 1978 (still have the box, packing materials, owner's manual, sales receipt). The right channel went silent decades ago for all inputs. I've paid for repairs two or three times--those repairs last for a while and then the channel goes silent again. Now the Marantz functions only as a switched outlet for a Bluetooth converter for a modern Sherwood receiver. I can't put the Marantz back in the box, though, for sentimental reasons and because it looks so damn cool.

    Replaced all 3 belts (even though the one under the carousel was fine) but this keeps happening, the carousel always stops one or so slots away from the clamp, then the carousel goes back and forth and then it ends up in table error. Have reset all belts and checked that all teeth on gears are fully set. What is causing this?

    Just trying to blow some dust off these old drawers, and this happened. No, this is not really a valid stripping technique. Somebody painted over clear varnish and the pain't didn't stick very well. Once the compressed air started getting underneath the paint it just kept blowing more and more of it off. I was only running about 90 PSI.
