The EU's Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue: Prospects for Peacebuilding in the Balkans
A panel discussion on the current negotiations over Kosovo and the role of the European Union, with Dr. Susan Woodward, Professor at the CUNY Graduate Center, Ivan Vejvoda, Permanent Fellow at The Institute for Human Sciences (IWM), Dr. Radmila Nakarada, Professor Emerita at the University of Belgrade, founder of the peace studies program in Serbia, and Dr. Pavle Kilibarda, a postdoctoral researcher at Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva. The discussion is moderated by Sandra Davidovic, Ph.D. program in political science, the CUNY Graduate Center.
The EU-facilitated Belgrade-Pristina dialogue has entered a dynamic new phase, against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine and ongoing divisions within the EU on its foreign policy, including Kosovo’s status. The newest Franco-German proposal on Kosovo has ignited attention in the Balkans and across Europe. It signifies a continuation of past, stalled peace processes as well as bolstering the EU’s role as a regional peacebuilder. Is it a viable solution to the Kosovo problem? What are its implications for Kosovo’s international status and Serbian position towards it? What does the EU have to offer to the region twenty years after first promising an opportunity for accession?

Europe by the back door. Undermine national independence and self-determination by stealth. European legislation affecting individuals without nation-state mediation. European rule reigns supreme over all national laws. Dismantlement of unanimous agreement on European policy, allowing the European project to continue un-impeded by wary nation-states. The incurrence of a single currency, the incurrence of European citizenship, designed to further undermine historic national identities. Replacement of the cumbersome pile of legislation and regulations, with one simple European constitution, with flag and supranational anthem. It will never cease until it has destroyed nation-states and national rule and national identity. Informative talk. But honestly, I just can't wait for the whole thing to collapse.
+MrCool Mug 1) you're an idiot 2) you do realise countries CHOSE to join the EU right? its not an empire that colonised europe
Daniel Schoop 1.That's not an argument, thats an ad hominem, and not a very inspirational one. 2. They chose to join the EE fucking C, not the United States of Europe. People are waking up. You go back to sleep.
+MrCool Mug Undermine historic national identities..... I think that statement says alot about your inward looking point of view. Union can be a good thing. The system itself needs reform but the core idea itself is noble and forward thinking.
TheTom32j So, if you believe your identity and culture should prevail, instead of being replaced by an undemocratic bureaucratic empire, then you're "inward looking"? As if being "inward looking" is somehow a bad thing. The point is we didn't want a political union, but thats what we're getting. You cannot unite with people who do not want to have their sovereignty removed, unless you do it by force. Send an army to conquer us, or fuck off. We're leaving.
As I said there needs to be reform. And it is starting. There are movements like Diem25 which are calling for the democratisation of the process and more transperancy (such as live streaming of council meetings just as a start). However culture and identity are one thing. Nationalism is another. We can all keep our identities and cultures. They enrich us and are good as an anchor and feeling of belonging The powerful are the only ones who benefit from the idea of nationalism along arbitrary borders. It is in my opinion dangerous. Nobody wants armys marching anywhere. Just transparency and democracy and the way to do that is i believe is from within (political union) and leading from the front. Not turning our backs on the problem. Have a nice day :)
this has been great for my understanding of the different institutions. will help me a lot with my upcoming EU law exam. thank you
