3 Malts Under New Management: Tullibardine "500," DT Tormore 2010 11yo, G&M Glenturret 2001 10yo
If the task were to think of Scottish malt distilleries that were previously owned by gigantic corporations - with almost everything they made getting vatted into large volume blends - and then somehow or other got taken over by smaller parties, we could all name a few prominent examples. Glenallachie! Tamdhu! Glen Moray! Glencadam! Uhh... Glendronach and Bruichladdich, although they didn't last!
But those are just the prominent, much-discussed examples. _Some_ of those corporate distilleries have been unloaded much more quietly, and you'd never even know except by stumbling across the change in Wikipedia summaries. And after having one of those experiences ("Wait... Edrington sold Glenturret?? What? When?") and spending a while spent poring over the entire public list of distillery ownership, I made a list of three particularly fun changes in management that might have slipped your notice. And they all just happen to be very T-themed. Stats:
- Tullibardine "500" Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Sherry Cask Finish (NAS, bottled 2022; 43% ABV), 82/100
- Tormore 2010 11 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (Duncan Taylor, Cask no. 82801207, 11/2010 to 4/2022, 264 bottles; 53.8% ABV), 88/100
- Glenturret 2001 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (Gordon & Macphail for BC Merchants; Refill Sherry Hogshead no. 593, 9/25/2001 to 7/2012, 288 bottles; 55.1% ABV), 86/100
The Tullibardine 500, from an enormous post-war southern Highlands malt factory (formerly of the White & Mackay empire), is one of the new releases from current owners Famille Picard of Burgundy. It's lightly sherried, it's sort of lean and citric and herbaceous, it's 43%... and, well, it's absolutely fine. Worth a grab if you see it at a good price and need a house malt.
The Duncan Taylor Tormore, from another enormous post-war distillery (this time in the Speyside in what looks like an industrial mansion, and this time formerly owned by Pernod-Ricard/Chivas), is absolutely insane. Gummy bears and strong tea are some of the main notes. It's a signature way outside of most people's comfort zone, but pay attention and you'll find that the level of quality is super-high: this bottlings and others like it are well worth your time, and I'm hoping new owners Elixer Distillers (of Port Askaig/Black Tot fame) will lean into the weirdness.
And then there's a rare unpeated IB Glenturret, a bottle from my archives. Glenturret is a very old southern Highlands distillery and former home of the Edrington empire's Famous Grouse Experience; the OBs you now see around are from the Lalique Group, mainly known for perfume (and that's okay). You might mistake it for a simple sherry bomb initially but there's a ton of orangey/grainy character there if you look for it... although it's just not enough to take down the bonkers Tormore.
And there you have it! Just a reminder that independent production in Scotland isn't all about cool new distilleries: sometimes it's about old ones getting new leadership and hopefully a little bit of love.

    the only one of those I ever bought was the Jamaica because you don't have to drink it to know it's the best of the bunch because of where it's from. I pretty much have stopped buying rum from different places. I have about 5 or 6 distilleries to buy from and not waste time or money on other stuff. I have kind of come to the same place in malts also. I have come to the conclusion that it's more important what not to buy than what to buy and chasing around stuff made all over the globe like some kind of F-ing newbie idiots do to charge their egos. Too little time to F around with BS and I know what is good and what is goos has been good forever. The latest greatest scam is for fools. I'm good with Springbank and Hampden and still have not tasted anything to touch them nor will there be.

Like, when they're not anchored down by very specific questions, there's a tendency to spin off into some mix of cliche or romanticising or low key defense of some social/cultural/economic status quo. To run with the "phenomenology" thing (and yes yes yes I get the Hegel joke but I want to take the idea seriously 😂), it's worth remembering that even Husserl always wrote his books as responses to specific problems or confusions (Ideas I against bad naturalisms/positivisms, etc.). Did something change with the regulations? I thought a straight bourbon whiskey had to be aged a minimum of 2 years. I love this stuff. Killer deal. The bonded and the top floor were a miss for me. But this one and the single barrel are great great deals. The new mellow corn is a great way to put it.

    • @differentspirits4157
      @differentspirits4157 Před 15 dny

      This is one of the legal quirks of straight whiskey. Any whiskey meeting regulations gets to be labelled straight if it's been in barrel for two years, BUT if it's _under four years old_ it also has to have an explicit age statement. Ergo, if it says "straight" but there's no age statement, it's at least four.

    If it's not selling, just send it over the pond... Our supply of Buffalo Trace & Eagle Rare has been quite good while those were apparently sought after in the US (my current 1l bottle of Buffalo Trace was <20€). I've gotten quite bored with basic bourbons lately (the less basic ones are either not available or rather overpriced in these parts), cheap aged agricles hit roughly the same spot for me in a more interesting way. I made a quick W&N+BT blend (~1:2) and it's... not too bad, actually. More harmonious than most multi spirit blends I've tried, I might have to go though my white rum arsenal... (Did you just go straight to Wray & Nephew or have you tried other combinations?)

    With the bottle I had, that /floral vodka smashed into the ground with new oak/ aspect was resolute in not sticking the landing for me. Characterful yet also distinctly in an aging valley that even another 4-6 months might’ve solved. Hardly a misapplication of funds all the same, but the single barrel and top floor offerings have been much more coherent for my palate despite the strange low proofs of each.

    Another CZcamsr, Drinking Buddy, put a charred oak spiral in one of these for about 8 months and it beat out a ton of Stagg's in a blind. Got a bottle for less than $20 and the spiral was a few bucks, so a pretty low-risk experiment that I'm looking forward to. Not that it has to be better than Stagg or any other bottle, it can be just a nice improvement on the original and bring out some more age and complexity that makes it shine.

    Dad’s Hat is fantastic! Being in Philly we have good access to their single barrels, of the four or so I’ve had only one that was underwhelming and it was aged ~2 years in quarter casks so it hardly counts. Rumor has it that they may start aging in a brick warehouse that’s temperature controlled in a way that those Monongahela warehouses often were. If that’s true, and if they start getting their hands on some rosen rye grain as stocks of those proliferate, that could make things truly interesting and could make them a real powerhouse not just in American whiskey but spirits in general. Just missing that three-chamber component…
