Nauticat 38 S/Y Nina cold and windy Easter sailing trip 2024
zhlédnutí 2,2KPřed 2 měsíci
Going on a five day trip aboard S/Y Nina, our beloved old Nauticat 38 built in 1980. The weather forecast didn’t give us much hope for warm and nice weather but for us it’s always a positive thing to stay on the boat. Nauticats are built for the northern areas with their proper wheelhouses. It turned out to be a pretty blustery few days, cold northerly winds most days at 7-14 m/s or around 15-2...

The very first boat trip in 2024, the first days of March. After a very cold period, and also some nasty weather, we could untie Nina and head off for a weekend aboard. Going out the fjord, and to Helnessund, Steigen in northern Norway. Beautiful weather, but nature won’t let us forget where we are. This time with some ice forming in the fjord when we were going home again. Nothing to do but ta...

Managed to drop an O-ring while working with fixing a water leak at the docks. Didn’t have a spare so got out the drone and searched. Water depth is around 15 meters, 45 feet. A little bit of current and water not clear enough to see it from the surface (lost visual contact at 6-7 meters). Took a bit of searching but when we found it it was pinched in the grab arm after a few seconds of fiddlin...

After discovering a small vibration in my driveline, an investigation revealed a slightly bent prop and shaft. We decided to go all in, and get a new feathering prop to improve sailing on this old motorsailer, and also get a new shaft, new drip less seal and flexible coupling. After hours of researching and pondering, we decided to go for VariProp, and ordered everything directly from them. The...
Nauticat 38, can she sail?

Going from our home port to Bodø, for our first haul out and some new anti foul. I named this video “Can she sail” because, as a motorsailer of course her sailing abilities are limited. For us, she still provides joyful sailing even if she’s not the fastest boat, and even if she won’t win any races, she’ll get us there in comfort and safety. After this video was made, a few really important imp...

A couple of days off, plus the weekend, and chose to take a trip to Lofoten. Very lucky with the weather, only one day with rain. Also not much wind to sail properly, except for our return trip across Vestfjorden. We didn’t have much time to spend, so hopefully next time we will be able to stay longer and explore more of the beautiful places. A very nice trip, and a very happy crew aboard S/Y N...

The last days in March 2021 we went for a four day trip around the area where we live. Sort of the seasons “shakedown” cruise. Just a short Sunday trip for a few hours. Normally it would be cold and snow at this time, so why not take advantage of an okay Sunday. Hi, we are thinking of getting an NC 38 as a live-aboard, what do you think?
Depending on how many people you are and your needs and expectations it surely can be done. Space is always an issue, and like a garage, they will never be big enough. But with size comes cost so there will always be a compromise. Visit a few if you can, and imagine living there with all your stuff🙂
Got a tree blade vario on my 2000 331 originally, working well.
Nice video …..Going North again with Ægir from Bergen, got a 331, been to Lofoten two years ago. This time Senja and my old base close to Tjeldsundet 😊
Two years ago… we did a round trip around Senja two years ago, and on our way back we saw a Nauticat in the distance heading north just south of Steigen! We could see someone looking back at us through the binoculars but could not make out a name. We sailed, and this other boat motor sailed with the mizzen up. Could it be….????
Just like in Norway. I got a 331,
Reliable cars
What size anchor do you have with that N38? Thx
It is a 27 kg Ultra Anchor. We replaced our old CQR 27 kg and it is a day and night difference. A really great anchor, couldn’t be happier with it, despite the high cost.
Her sitter jeg og skanner finn.no for vår første seilbåt mens jeg ser på dere. Herlig video og håper dere får en fin sesong.
Herlig!!! Det er så moro den prosessen der! Det å gjøre vurderinger, finne sine favoritter og «must have» og det motsatte! Lete etter de rette kandidatene, og all spenningen som følger med! Masse lykke til i jakten, hva dere enn lander på🤠👍👍
Great video. Love that dog !!!!
Thanks for the video! It's fun to see a Nauticat sailing. I love the pilot house of my NC44.
If I had views like that after work I’m sure I would not go back. Just keep sailing.
Believe me, there is nothing I would like more! But like everyone I need to keep working, so maybe one day one will be able to go and never look back🤠. I would for sure head for a bit warmer climates😬
With or without a bow thruster?
We have a bow thruster.
Nice to see a Nauticat sailing. Not too many videos of them on CZcams.
Nice to see your boat, and that motor sailors can Sail, myself trying in a old Finnclipper. And in those cold environments. Thanks!
Hi thanks for your great content. Can i ask you what the engine cruising speed and maximum engine speed is?
The engine max speed is rated 2600 rpm. We never go full throttle. We cruise at 1500-1800 rpm, normally doing 6,5-7 knots at 1700 rpm. The new prop we installed is a trade off, we lost some power under engine so going into the weather and waves affects speed a little more than with the old fixed prop. However, we easily gained a knot in light and medium conditions under sail, so an ok trade off. At next haul out we will try to adjust the pitch a little and see how that turns out.
I love it when you guys leave the actual sailing audio of the ocean hitting the boat
We don’t need no muzac 😂😂😂
I race a Nauticat 44 on San Francisco bay, reaching long distance races, I can win, short up wind races, I can't win. But handicap racing is the game, so a 38 Nauticat that can get to the start line for every race in the series will do just fine. And when the race is over, turn on the engine and the heater and motor sail home.
I've seen your boat in a few races. You're reason I'm looking at this video.
Perfeckt
Great yacht. Great handeling. 👍⛵️🤩
Beautiful vessel. We have a 1983 Nauticat 36 which we are slowly restoring named AARLUK after the Inuit name for the orca. She sails wonderfully, motors briskly and, like your own boat, is very comfortable passage maker.
….un bon bateau à vivre.
I like very much confortable yacht
I see you gave yourself every inch possible to make that turn, but perfect docking! Got to love it when that happens. I always have a hard time with my NC44. I love the NC's under 40' If I didn't want/need the space of a 44, I think a 38 would have been awesome to have.
The bow thruster helps😇
Excuse me but I'm from N. America so I don't understand. Why are you out sailing when it's snowing? ;)
If i only went out on the boat when the weather is nice, trips would be few and far apart. Up here we can have four seasons in an hour…🤷♂️😤
If the Vikings had Nauticats, they would have sailed to Florida.
Yes she can sail . I might name mine no hurry from Thailand .
Hi, love this boat......are they built as good as I read they are, as in they don't break or need huge amount of repairs, or are they like a lot of other boats a constant battle to keep at sea? Just asking as really thinking of getting one 😃
All boats have their issues, but I really think it helps that they are built well to begin with! After owning this boat for a few years now, and putting down a lot of hours, I would still buy and older, heavy displacement well built boat over a newer cheap production boat any day of the week.
Thanks, good advice indeed @@Stefanesai
It can sail, but you certainly won't be winning any regatas
Hats off to you helming in the outside position when you could be inside nice and warm 👏🏻 does the woodburner work ok when sailing or would you only use it when not making way?
In the fjords, between steep mountains the winds are so unpredictable that sailing from the inside is challenging. And I like the fresh air🙂. But I’d rather be sailing in a warmer climate❤️🤠. The wood stove works in any condition, but we add a piece of chimney which is in the way of the boom, so normally we don’t sail and have a fire at the same time. Also, fire on a boat is not something to be taken lightly, so it’s better under supervision in a controlled environment.
@@Stefanesai Thankyou for the brilliant answer. Congratulations on such a nice boat, she is very cool!
I only used the inside helm when motoring the access to the sheets & winches is outside only
Nice catch!
Lovely boat. Is the Nauticat limited when just under sail? Can you still do everything a normal sailing boat can do just slower ?
She can do more or less everything. She can’t go as close to the wind as “proper” sailboats, closer than around 40 degrees apparent wind angle is pushing it. And she is a bit slower, but she’ll get there comfortably 🙂
Always liked these boats. Could never afford one. Ended up with a smaller fiberglass sloop. But it was sailing anyway.
Found you rchannel because Im "window shopping" for such a boat as yours frim 38 to 44 feet. The pilot house giving extended season is one factor making this boat atractive. Are you happy with your choice???
Hi, every boat is a compromise, and the trick is to try and prioritize your wishes and demands, and go from there. Some things will be important, and some things not so important, while others may be dealbreakers. When we were “window shopping” as you say, we had a few “must have” on our list. A proper pilot house, a proper inside and outside helm position, solid rails and bulwarks, since we have kids and a big dog was some of them. Also solid built, a keel that won’t fall off and a skeg hung rudder. We always came back to Nauticat, even though we found a few other brands here and there, Motiva 39 was one we looked at. But it didn’t set my heart on fire… So to answer your question, yes. Very happy. The cons on our model is the lack of a proper cockpit, which makes sailing in rough weather from the aft deck not optimal. Also, it is now 43 years old, but she’s a lovely boat. Plans for a change is somewhere down the road, probably several years down, and we are considering a more sailing oriented Nauticat 43, which may suit future plans better. Or, my dream, a 441… but as dreams are cheap, reality is not, and those are for now out of reach for me. But yes, happy with the 38 and it will take a lot for the next boat NOT to be a Nauticat👍🙂
@@Stefanesai Can't tell you how valuable your reply is to me!... You said so much and conveyed exactly what I needed to hear confirmed. I only "discovered" Nauticat two weeks ago listening to "Captain Q" and the "Sailing Lady K" channels. Thank you so much for taking time for a stranger...
@@randystrand908 No problem, best of luck finding your boat🙂. Fun times🙂👍

I like your clips, would be nice with a full walkthrough of your 38
Maybe we could make that happen🙂. But this YouTubing is just for fun and not at all professional 🤣. I’ll keep it in mind, so maybe we can make something someday 😇
This is a great boat. I've been seriously looking at Nauticats for about 6 months, made an offer on a 44, but it didn't go through. These 38's seem to be a great size. Adds some nice space over a 33, and not quite the heavy hulk of the 44... do you ever find yourself in heavy seas where you'd like to have a bigger boat?
Thanks for your comment🙂. They are truly great boats. A 44 is/was my dream, or even better a 441… but unfortunately they are out of my price range so we found our 38 and are happy with it🙂. So many things to consider, but the 38 is roomy enough. We are a family of 5 plus a huge dog, but it turns out that the two oldest kids have other interests so normally we are three onboard plus the dog. So plenty enough. With the substantial bow sprit on the front and davits at the back it’s bigger than the stated 38 feet, and at 12 tons she’s no lightweight. But very manageable with the big prop and bow thruster, although a pain to back up in a straight line. They say that the semi fin keel 38 also sails a little better than the 44, but I couldn’t say as I haven’t tried🙂. We have been in some serious weather, and never felt unsafe. Sure, she pitches and rolls, but not a single squeak from anything. We are mostly in sheltered waters, but being far north in Norway the seas here is no joke. Two meter waves in open waters you almost can’t notice, but two meter waves at two second intervals is hairy. Normally we don’t loose more than a knot or two if the weather and waves kick up and we go by motor, but one time we managed only 1-2 knots at normal cruising rpm. Our wind instrument was down, but the estimated wind speed/forecasted was about 50-60 knots, and then with 1-2 meter waves at a very short interval…. Had to use chart plotter to keep the boat in the right direction and into the weather, because it was almost impossible to see anything outside. I think it would have been a hairy trip in a 44 as well🙂
@@Stefanesai Thanks for the reply. I'm "boat dreaming" and the Nauticats have caught my heart and mind. I'm approaching 60 and I'm from a short lived family, so I need to stop dreaming and buy a boat. I think the major difference your cutaway keel will make is slightly less wetted area drag, so you'll go a little faster. You'll also maneuver better in the marinas. I think difficulty pointing into the wind is mainly a function the windage caused by your raised bow, pilot house and mizzen mast. Once the mizzen is in the wind shadow of the main, it becomes drag. Apparently you should avoid this to get the best out of a ketch when sailing upwind. But poor upwind sailing is the price for all of that comfort. Everyone I've talked with has said it's a tradeoff that was well worth making. I've had a 44 owner tell me that they got an extra half knot when they replaced their big fixed prop for a folding prop. Something to keep in mind... Fair winds... : )
@@jasonmcintosh2632 Every boat made is a compromise, and in that respect there is no perfect boat. Only perfect for the owner🙂👍. The 38 sail well enough for us, of course we can’t compete in really light winds or against more sail oriented regatta boats, but we do well enough. If sailing is a big thing there is always the S&S designed Nauticat’s out there to choose from like the 37, 40 and 43’s. Choosing a boat is sometimes like choosing a dog… sometimes the dog/boat choose you🙂👍. When looking at different boats, we always came back to Nauticat’s, there was just something about them that struck a chord with us. While we have friends that chose completely different, and while there are good arguments for both sides there are no one correct answer. Boats are different, because we are. We are not getting younger, any of us, so keep at it. I wish you all the best, hope you find “your” boat soon (or she finds you), and get out there. Lots of joy not only sailing, but also caring for a fine built vessel is rewarding🙂. Best of luck to you, sir⛵️❤️😎
Btw that folding or feathering prop is on the “improvement list”. But they are costly😆💸
New feathering prop installed last summer, 1 knot speed gain in light and moderate winds💪👍🙂

Hi, great video as always from wonderful places and so far from my home. Thanks to you I can enjoy it a little too ... What happened to the gunwale on the bow on the left?
Thanks for your comment🙂. Unfortunately the teak plank on the outside has a little rot, making it loose. We have it, but not risking to loose it overboard🙂. The replacement of the teak planks is on the “to-do” list, but we probably won’t be able to do it this year. Just finished a major electrical upgrade, with new lithium house batteries, chargers, inverter, more solar panels and so on. Expensive stuff💸🙂
