Data Analysis part 9 (background and basics of image data)

This video looks at two things: (1) some background to show the history of image data is much older than computers - skippable, but useful to show that the idea (and main principles) of learning from image data are not new, and developed along with earlier data analysis method; (2) definitions of image data, and descriptions of the key bits of analysis involved in learning from image data. I'm pretty sure the UK Chief Medical officer said that the study shows there is no safe level of alcohol consumption. Then she said in the same documentary that women who consume 5 units of alcohol a week have a decreased risk of developing breast cancer.

      @@grasonicus there was a study showing that women aged 50+ had a decreased risk of breast cancer if they drank no more than 5 units a week. However if they drank over the 5 then the risk greatly increased.

  • @VeganofSuburbia
    @VeganofSuburbia Před 3 lety

    but there's still a risk because tuberculosis can still kill people even if there's a vaccine or if it's curable. it's extremely rare to die from it in the West but it can still happen and so alcohol can increase that risk, even if it's very very rare. why remove it?

    • @FaranWhyde
      @FaranWhyde Před 3 lety

      I believe the article was used by the UK chief medical officer to provide advice to the people of the UK. For this audience, it's wrong to include the world-average effect of TB (even if there is an increase in the effect of TB due to alcohol - which is arguable, given the various sources, but let's assume there is). For the UK audience, the effect of TB should either be neglected, or included in proportion to the small amount of TB in the UK. That, however, would not have justified the eye-catching "no safe level" claim.

    • @VeganofSuburbia
      @VeganofSuburbia Před 2 lety

      @@FaranWhyde that's exactly my point though. Even if there's a very small risk of TB in the UK then alcohol definitely affects that.

      @Faran Whyde Also, you said it yourself in this video. There is a risk of 0.992 neglecting tuberculosis after 1 or 2 units, but that is still a risk because it's not 0 or below zero. And it's clearly what's increasing the "health benefits of alcohol" is not the alcohol itself but the vaccines or treatments of TB. • @FaranWhyde
      @FaranWhyde Před 3 lety

      You won't need to write about Nuisance Parameters. Well, the assignment (up on Moodle) does involve computing an estimate of two parameters, using chapter 4-5 of the notes. In a situation where there were two parameters, and you only wanted to estimate the first, but you needed to estimate the second one at the same time to do so, then the second one would be a nuisance parameter. Not a hugely important term, but in case you encounter it in a textbook you need to know it is a technical term.

    I noticed that too, but glad to see someone crunch some of the data. I'm in the States, so tb is not a worry. Ischemic heart disease is my main worry, and for many others here, diabetes is a big problem. Those drop with light to moderate consumption, though there's some increase in cancer risk. I'd guess that some of the car crashes are from binge drinking, where the daily average might be low, which raises the question of how many other risks are from bingeing. I no doubt drink a little more than optimal. But these sorts of scare headlines from the Lancet study don't help me weigh the true risks.

    • @FaranWhyde
      @FaranWhyde Před 3 lety

      I agree with this, and I'm in the same boat. One remarkable thing about the way the study handled deaths due to traffic collisions and alcohol, is that the study looked at the total number of deaths from these collisions. It assigned all of the risk to the drink-driver -- with the result that if (say) 2 people die in an average traffic collision, and (say) 1 in a million drink-drivers create such a collision, the "increased risk to the driver of traffic-death drinking" is computed as 2-in-a-million, even though it is is really 1-in-a-million (plus a 1-in-a-million chance of being killed by someone else who is drink-driving). This is a really subtle point, and one I don't think the authors understood, or if they did they didn't explain it. The result is that the "headline conclusion" that not-drinking would decrease your personal risk by 2-in-a-million is wrong. In fact, the decrease if *you* don't drink is (say) 1-in-a-million, and you only get the 2-in-a-million improvement if everyone else quits drinking too. The problem with this is that the headline is simple untrue: it should say "2 in a million improvement if *everyone* goes teetotal" not just "you". It would be nice if conclusions (including the press-release lines produced by scientists) were actually true, but that seems to be asking for too much. At least, that's my understanding of the paper.

    • @VeganofSuburbia
      @VeganofSuburbia Před 2 lety

      There's a still a risk in TB even if it's very very small. We can't get rid of it 100% and so if we can't then there's not zero risk by drinking in moderation.

    Link to CZcams video showing iron in nitric acid (but I'm mildly distressed he poured water into concentrated acid without wearing safety specs - though he does have glasses) czcams.com/video/qayfY19qiK8/video.html Compare with pH-potential diagram (Pourbaix diagram) for iron. Concentrated nitric acid is a strong oxidising agent, so iron in this acid has a high enough galvanic potential to be passivated. Dilute nitric acid isn't sufficiently oxidising to passivate the iron, so, soon, the iron corrodes actively (and fast, as the nitrate --> NO2 is still an oxidising agent).
