Yield Not to Temptation - H. R. Palmer (1868) - 1897 Berlin Reed Organ
Horatio Richmond Palmer (1834-1907) was an American composer, musician, and hymnwriter who made significant contributions to the world of church music. Born on April 26, 1834, in Sherburne, New York, Palmer displayed an early talent for music and received formal training in music theory and composition.
Palmer is best known for his work as a hymnwriter. One of his most famous hymns is "Yield not to temptation," which he composed in 1868. This hymn became widely popular and has been included in numerous hymnals and collections over the years. It is characterized by its uplifting message and memorable melody.
In addition to composing hymns, Palmer was also an editor of hymnbooks, contributing to the musical education and worship practices of many churches. His editorial work ensured that a wide range of hymns and sacred music reached congregations across America and beyond.
Palmer's influence extended beyond hymnwriting and editing. He authored several works on music theory, contributing to the understanding and teaching of music among musicians and music educators during his time.
Throughout his career, Palmer remained dedicated to the spiritual and musical enrichment of church communities. His hymns continue to be sung and cherished by congregations worldwide, reflecting his enduring legacy in church music. "Loch Lomond" is a Scottish song, also known as "The Bonnie Banks o' Loch Lomond". This song prominently features Loch Lomond, the largest Scottish loch, located between the council areas of West Dunbartonshire, Stirling and Argyll and Bute. In Scots, "bonnie" means "attractive", "beloved", or "dear". The music that I am using was written for piano and voice, published in 1897. In this video, i...

It is believed that organist Mark Shakhin, one of the performers on the "Melodiya" LP, first ascribed the work to Giulio Caccini after Vavilov's death, and gave the "newly-discovered scores" to other musici...

I also had (but no longer have) a Seybold reed organ. It had come out of the Catholic Church in Castle Rock, CO in, I believe, the 1950s. It had seven full sets of reeds along with the Sub Bass (which it sounded like the organ in the recording also has), and also had a magnificent sound at full organ, along with a very nice variety of sounds. One of the full sets of reeds in the Seybold I had was a "Reed Pipe" stop which had a very different, almost "hooty", non-reedy sound. The organ was inscribed (by the assembler?) with a name and a 1917 date just under the keyboard, behind the front screen facing the organist. In 1997 (when I sold it), amazingly, it had the original bellows cloth on it.

Here is a translation (not mine) of the Welsh words for which this melody was written. Grant me the peace beyond earth's understanding; Peace, heavenly peace, Christ bought on Calvary's hill; And when the wave on my weak soul is pounding, Here by his cross I hear him, "Peace! Be still!" O grant the peace no storm on earth can shatter, Nor ever weary, never once remove; And in the darkest night this peace shall keep us, Resting secure in God our Father's love. Grant us the peace to work for heaven, accepting Without despair the hardships of this age; Knowing that nothing from your love can part us, Although the storms about us here may rage. O for the peace that flows on like a river Through God's own city, by the tree of life; Peace after anguish, to the throng of pilgrims, Beyond the veil, leaving behind all strife.

Hi Rodney, I purchased my first reed organ yesterday. Its a beautiful Beckwith (Sears & Roebuck) in excellent condition with the bellows having recently been refurbished. The reeds do need to be cleaned and tuned. I need to check it with a tuner. It seems to be 448-452. Is your Berlin organ in this pitched at 440? Thanks for making these videos.
