How To Clean A Mass Air Flow Sensor on a 1998 Toyota 4Runner
I have a very similar mower that just took a dump. It sounded like i hit something and sheared the flywheel key. The engine died right away, although i couldnt locate anything i might have run over, maybe a rock, but its seemed pretty low in the ground. Anyways, I replaced the sheared key and it still won't start. Could it be a crankshaft issue like yours if the engine is freely turning over with the spark plug in place? I have fire, and im pretty sure i have fuel. There is an air leak sound coming from the oil canister, and i have yet to check compression.
If I were you, I wouldn’t even put the deck back on it. I would just get yourself a little trailer and I noticed you have a garden and if you have a fireplace, you can haul brush or wood.
Nope, I would not waste the effort on the deck either; I would see if the spindles and blades are saveable to use for bench stock or to put on a better 42/46in deck for that model mower😊.
On tires with slow leaks (dry rot), I use automatic transmission fluid. It works about 95% of the time. I usually save used ATF for this purpose. I have not tried the oil trick to determine which works better since i have had such good luck with ATF.
Got one just like it few days ago..Someone took really good care of the outside of it but never changed the oil..Pull the bottom off motor just for kicks and it was chuncky..Broke chunk out the cyclinder crack case..I had a 18 intek i used the cover off the old one 17.5..It looked brand new....Your deck looks ruff..hehe..Thanks for sharing. .❤
Thank you for your comment! I do find it enjoyable working on these mowers.
Mine had the exhaust popping back up thru the intake plastic pipe. I adjusted valves and runs fine. Well its being dropped in a stiga park president. Motor up from 12.5 to this 21. By brain cant follow wire looms so i squealed like a lil girl when i saw the key switches are the same. I just swapped ignitions and hooked up the stiga loom. Then the party was over again because of the clips on the motor are different. So no i have to figure out where to plug the magneto wire, the fuel solenoid wire, the kill switch wire and i need to add a pto switch. Im at the head scratching stage now.
It doesn’t always go as planned but there’s nothing more satisfying than working through it and getting it running.
That looks like a beautiful piece of property. Wow…
I certainly enjoy the property. Thank you for your comment.

that lawn mower please take a look at the blades are upside down on STX38
Yes, I noticed they were upside down while I was editing the video and I did correct it. Thank you for the comment.
good enough!!!
Great video, Gary. I just picked up one of these (freebie) and the deck is not working. Now I know where to check for the problem.
Thank you for the comment and I hope your fix will be as simple as mine was.
Hi Gary. I have a 2011 and I did exactly what you said and it worked 100%. Unbelievable. I’ve been avoiding using my windows for years and today I couldn’t get 2 of them to go up. I fixed them in 15 minutes without getting frustrated all because of your help. Thank you so much. ✌️
Thank you for the kind words and I’m glad you found the video helpful.

Hey Thanks for the tip on heating the float.
I’m glad you found it helpful. Thanks for letting me know!
I’ve got a yellow deck and the steering won’t work. 😢
It shouldn’t be that hard to fix. A couple of hours and a few CZcams videos and you’ll have it up and running. Thank you for the comment!
Nice job! Would love to see that old snapper in the background running!
Someday I would like to do a full restoration on the Snapper riding mower. I think they are pretty neat machines. Thanks for the kind words!
Great to see someone actually getting an ole 6 engine going:-) I'm so sick of people just stuffing in a chevy 350 to what ever they are building!
I love these old engines. Unfortunately it’s going to take awhile to get this project finished. Thank you for the kind words!
*Good carburetor cleaning job.*
Thank you!
Great video
Thank you, I appreciate the kind words!
Thanks for this. I've got the yt4000 and I've learned a thing or 2 from your video.
Thank you for the kind words!
I know what the problem is.. it's a GMC. ... I mean a MTD
Lol
adding 1 ounce of two stroke oil per 5 gallons of gasoline will keep these platinum engines running forever and they will not use any oil. I have a YT3000 that runs like its been charmed since 2018. I bought the machine used for 200.00
We used to add 2 stroke oil to the gas in our demolition derby cars back in the day. Certainly can’t hurt the mower when mixed properly .
Hola saludos desde México. Mucha suerte con tu proyecto.
Thank you!

I do enjoy watching Taryl. Thank you for the comment.
@@GaryAhl me too. Thank you.
I luv Jersey ! Graduated college from there.
What part of Jersey ?
@@GaryAhl Drew University in Madison. You sound like a South Jersey guy.
@@PapaMav Yep, South Jersey surrounded by farmland.
What oil filter does it take? Do you happen to know a part number?
NAPA Gold filter Part #: FIL 1011. I believe they are made by Wix Filters.
@@GaryAhl see I have a 1954 c1-b6 I been getting running it sat since 83 so after all the getting the engine lined out I been trying to find the filter for it. It’s like 6”x 4” and it’s located on the drivers side fender. Kinda looks like a soup can with holes is that what that filter looks like
I’m not sure about that filter but I recommend you join the group “Dodge Pilothouse Era Truck Club” on Facebook and ask the question there. A gentleman named Eric Bannerman moderates the group and is extremely knowledgeable about these trucks. Good chance he may be able to help you.
how did JD avoid a billion in Class Action suites for the millions of self destructing hoods and seats they slammed down in our possession. abysmal
Thank you for the comment.
It happened to me when I got home, back window wouldn't go up, I just removed the panel, hit the electric motor and it worked. No time for repairs at the moment, I did it just to keep the truck closed and locked.
Thank you for the comment!
What are some synonyms with the F-150 cab off the frame use my cherry picker like he did but I use straps to mount to the seat belt bolt Downs seat belt bolt Downs in the rear and then for the front I was able to find other places where I can put a bolt at the Loop dingo smooth but it did come off
Thank you for the comment.
I was waiting for you to find the loose ground wire. Have a Stx38 yellow deck since 1990. Just had to reattach the engine to the frame as only the ground bolt was still holding it on. Started to vibrate last fall and I didnt get to investigating the issue until this spring. Once I got all 4 bolts back in with blue locktite, no more vibration.
The owner of this STX fought with it for a long time. Fortunately it was a simple fix. Thank you for your comment.
How does the lawnmower charge the battery without a generator?
Not very well.
Magneto/magnets will need attention. They are easy to replace. Great work and video getting that old gal going. Just worked on one to use as a softball field dragging tractor. Enjoyed it greatly.
Thank you for the kind comment I appreciate it.
dont do it with the hood, lol
It did feel a bit wrong putting a Craftsman hood on a John Deere.
People never give nothing for nothing in NZ you guys are so lucky in the states
It’s not that common here in the states anymore.
If you look at the u.s. as the haves and the have nots and you cam tell the difference by the wasteful spending and lack of effort they put into fixing things or just buying new. Every spring the curbs are loaded with big flat screens that still work but one house got a new one so everyone got a new one. And people are getting lawn service so mowers aren't needed as much. It's funny they will give some things away but sometimes they'd rather push it off a cliff rather then let someone else have it.
Good luck from a fellow madman. If we don't restore these wagons, no one will :)
So true and they really are nice trucks. I plan to keep this truck original.
My first vehicle was a 53 Dodge 5 window pilot house pickup back in 1972. I'm on the hunt for one now as my bucket list truck.
They are still out there and the price for them hasn’t risen like other Mopars so you should be able to find one for a reasonable price. I can’t wait to drive my truck but I’m sure it’s going to be a few years before that happens. Time and money always seem to get in the way.
I HAVE A 1953 DODGE B4 PICKUP.. I LUV IT👍🏽 IS THAT OLD CAR FOR SALE IN YOUR SHOP.🤔
lol…No it’s not for sale.
Great idea for getting cab off not everyone has a car lift
I would love to say it was my idea but I seen it on another CZcams channel. I think it was called Estrada Motor Sports but I’m not sure. Thanks for the comment!
Your dodge been waiting for you. good to see you back! I'm working on '53 B4B
Yes life and money seems to get in the way of progress but I hope to have more time this year to work on it. Thank you for the comment I appreciate it!
Them John Deere from that error has the worst hoods than any other mower ever made. I don't think I've ever seen one that functioned as it should. Great video.
John Deere certainly made the worst hoods back then. Thank you for the comment.
@@GaryAhl My hood has been perfect since 1989. User friendly as well.
My stx38 is 34 yrs old and has the original hood in non broken condition. I’ve never had a problem with it, but it is a PITA to take off and on.
My 1990 stx38 still has its original hood in one piece and my only complaint is how difficult it is to remove. I have gotten better at that after diagnosing my recent engine vibration issue. Now if I can remember how to take it off the next time I will be doing great. Chances are I will forget and will need to figure it out all over again. Getting old sucks.
Low voltage??? Check valve lash before replacing camshaft
I think I would superglue the cracks in the magnets and see if it helps
I’ll keep your suggestion in mind for the next time I come across broken magnets. Thanks
fuel pump lever
Remember my Dad doing the valves with a drill and valve grinding compound
Thank you for the comment.
it is the lever of the fuel pump
Yes it is. 👍
I just paid 1100 dlls for a plymouth flat head 6 cil in line engine and transmission, those engines are hard to find now and becoming expensive.
Yes they are and so is everything else I need for the truck. Might have to find a part time job so I can finish the truck…lol
