The reason why he was so awkward is because they specifically required him to not play guitar and to only play along to a guitar track during the solo. He was clearly awkward about it and probably wasn’t comfortable faking it but usually musicians don’t have a choice when they’re told to do something by someone higher up. It’s happened to tons of musicians and when things go wrong and they’re caught out, it can be so damaging to their career. Saturday night live is notorious for not actually allowing their artists to perform live. Ashley Simpson’s career was ruined that way.
