"...it do take nerve!" "GIMLETS, Jane, GIMLETS"!
Carol Burnett skit Anita Bryant
My hero, Carol Burnett. She is a genius. She stood up for gay rights on national television, when it was NOT OKAY TO BE GAY. I watch this as an adult, who was a child in the 70's, looking back, knowing what I know now, she and everyone in this skit, took A HUGE RISK. It's not hard to read between the lines. In the 70's and 80's, EVERYDAY after school, I watched Carol Burnett. She lifted my spirits bc I was and still am that weird kid. Her humor, that show shaped the humor that I have today.Your welcome world! #carolburnett #anitabryant #lgbt #sketchcomedy

My name is Carmen Guy and I am an artist, among many other things. I would like to use this platform to connect with the world and o show my work. Inspired by one of my favorite CZcamsrs...Peter Monn. He has inspired me to be authentic and to stand up and make a difference in spite of fear. Thank you Peter.
And this is what happened when they put the crown of thorns on Jesus Christ . Laughing at and mocking him. Matthew 10 KJV 22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake:
Carol Burnett akways avoided taking political stances on her show, but this was curca 1871-72 when Anita Bryant and Sen. John Brihgs were trying to make it illegal for gay people to be teachers. I eas in middle school at this time, and parents were up in arms about this, as we had several hay teachers that were beloved by students and parents alike. Carol Burnett had many gay people in her staff...singers, dancers, Bob Mackie, and this is the first time U can recall where she really made a very important statement against the lunacy of Anita Bryant. It was done tastefully and with humor, but she still managed to throw irange juice in Ns Bryant's hateful face. Carol's sense if humir was always very camoy and she adired gay icons, and is one herself. Kudos to her and the cast for making this important but very funny satirical skit
Republican Party since 1964.
This clip looks more like a satire on weirdo Hollywood with a slight parody of Bryant thrown in for good measure. Bryant was a big news story at he time, so she was a target for frequent quips, but not a bad person when when you compare her to how hateful and outrageous the rainbow mafia was and still is. Especially now that they've come for the kids.
'Coming for the kids?' You've got to be kidding! The fundies and the scripture pimps literally go door-to-door, if not corner those of us daily... in 'middle America' with constant appeals to go their church, where they are indoctrinated in ancient lies and now marinated in conservative politics, all used as tools for the rich and powerful to remain so, while hating on and often calling for the LGBTQ community to be marginalized or even killed! Yeah...I think the hate is WAY more from the 'good christian folk' side....and Anita was one of the worst. She deserved every bit of karma she let loose. And the present day 'family values' bigots will eventually get theirs too. I keep thinking the right thing to do is to strip churches of their tax exemption for preaching such vile hate...and keep doing so until they learn the message to stay out of those people, relationships and families who's lives are NO business of theirs to begin with.
I really can't understand the words
I had forgotten that she did this. Bryant was a DISPICABLE EXCUSE FOR A "CHRISTIAN." SHE represented everything Christianity doesn't. EVEN her husband had enough of her and divorced her. Later, she would say, "It wasn't much of a marriage to begin with!" Then, she admitted she cheated on her husband as well ! CAROL, YOU'RE GREAT !You made BRYANT look better than she was ! 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊🍊
I had no idea she could sing like that.
I just learned of Anita Bryant by seeing video of her getting face pied. I didn't think I could find anything funnier, but this video proved me wrong. I actually watched this on broadcast television, but the subtext went right over my head (forty odd years ago). Brilliant.
I have loved Carol all my life but promoting homosexuality didn't make her genius. The ironic thing is that the things that Bryant warned us about in the 70s is happening now in our schools to our children. She was a brave and strong woman - and she was right.
You're joking.....
This sketch threw more shade than a palm tree. I can’t even begin to tell you how much it saddens me that no one does comedy this way anymore.
Good!
Love Carol Burnett. This skit was was great!
Terrible quality. Why do people try and shoot videos off a tv screen? Then to top ot off they turn the fan on in the background.
Does anyone know the air date of this episode? 1977? Prior to the Pie in the face incident?
I knew I liked her. She’s dope.
NOT FUNNY!
This is brilliantly written.
And that is why she is the queen 👸
Savage!
Can't believe I've never seen this before. Awesome.
Everything Anita said... has come true. Carol, you were a whore for your producers.
so true !
in what
@@nicelol5241 Study your history, then look around you, then watch the video again. Carol was spouting the Obamanian rhetoric in the 1970's right there.
@@moirbasso7051) go outside.
Carol is more Anita than anita
OMG.....Carol Burnett savagely trolled the hell out of Anita Bryant!!
And Carol is a loser !
@@MeadeSkeltonMusicSo you supported Anita Bryant and Fred Phelps dehumanizing gay people. You probably thought that homosexual people shouldn’t have any rights, are subhuman, and are meant to be discriminated against. Ironically, Anita Bryant and Fred Phelps said They did all that out of love. Trying to take away peoples freedom is not something you would do out of love. It’s called liberty and justice for all. Either we all have the same rights, or none of us do.
@@NerdNest83 before I was alive but they were ahead of their time.. Everything Anita warned us about came true!
@@MeadeSkeltonMusic Probably feel the same about Fred Phelps, too. Why do you people want to make it legal to discriminate against gays? You probably believe in the old stereotypes that homosexual=pedophile.
@@MeadeSkeltonMusicI smell a Bible thumping pedo
Oh damn! I wish I was old enough to know what this was about at the time. I would have been on the floor! I grew to love Carol Burnett soon after. Now I know why. Of course she would use her platform to take stand. Duh, she had designer Bob Mackie! How could she not throw some shade with her comedic genius. Love her!
I swear, there must be something in the orange juice.
😁
I never saw this, I always loved Carol Burnett and her show. I had a friend that worked with Bob Mackie, who worked on the Carol Burnett Show, I wonder if he influenced her decision to do this great skit.
She's is so funny!
Carol.. Always a Treasure !!
“The promised land is bright and gaaaaaay!” Lol
Back when you had to use code language to stand up for marginalized people, and she did it when even that was dangerous. I'd like to say that we've come very far since then but recent events have me wondering otherwise.
Disgraceful - spreading liberal propaganda. Disrespecting Anita Bryant who was only standing up for her beliefs.
My mom told me I would cry and wouldn't go to bed until I saw The Carol Burnette show when I was 3 or 4 years old. That should have been her first clue that I wasn't exactly like my 2 older brothers!
Beautiful!!!
Carol is a comedic genius. I love that I got to see her growing up.
FABULOUS
A TV producer from another network told us that Burnett and the show’s producers would try to make the program as dirty as they could possibly get by with. The studio audience would be used as a sounding board to help the network determine the reaction it would get nationally. He told us that Burnett was filthy-mouthed with the audience and obviously dependent upon producers to filter it.
Should I ended with a pie in the face
Thank God for Anita Bryant. LGBTQIA+ hate morality and anyone who fights for the betterment and conservative values of humanity. The TRUTH hurts and that’s why so many Christian’s are hated, and why so many people are defiant against believers. They’ll see the error of their ways on Judgment Day. Too many people want to re-write the Bible to fit their own narratives and that’s just not the case. Repent and turn from immorality and wickedness while you can still save your soul. God Bless..
Who was the guy that said "I'll never tell?"
Looks like Tim Conway. What's a Tim Conway? About 120 pounds.
this is my first time ever seeing this. But i've heard abt Anita Bryant from my mom, & for a moment, i was kinda anticipating someone just randomly running up & slamming a pie in Carol/Anita's face LOL
Kind of wish someone would do that to Ron DeSantis'.
There's a place in hell for Anita Bryant but God has reserved the whole goddamn Plaza Hotel in Heaven for Carol Burnett.
I don't want her to go to hell. But it would be cool if she was housed in some gay district in heaven, let her see how it feels to be in the minority.
Anita Bryant was a brave lady who spoke the truth. Everything she warned about has come true!
My grandparents loved Carol Burnett. They were also anti-homosexual, but we were in Long Beach, which was a big gay town. I think Carol softened them.
Does anyone know the date this skit originally aired or at least the exact year?
Likely the final season of her original series...1977-78
Anita was a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice.
Agreed. It may be argued that Anita was one of the early victims of Hollywood Cancel Culture. You either throw out your Bible and tow the line, or they will turn you into a nonperson! It is truly sad and disappointing to see Carol piling on to those who are not allowing Anita to follow her sincerely held religion.
Absolutely!
but a very ugly heart.
Extremely lame profile picture
You can change the system but you can not change your d n a. Ja ja ja
Nothing risky about this skit. There was a non - stop assault on Anita Bryant by the entertainment and pop culture establishment at the time. These so called tolerant people were hell bent on destroying her career, and they succeeded.
@@annmariechinn106 Anita was far from evil. She loved people and wanted them to know the truth.
I love this skit, carol put the produce girl in her place,,, lol
I remember seeing Waylon flowers and madam in p town a long long time ago and that was one of Madam's lines 😂
no it was pathetic.
