Between 1933 and 1946, John A. Lomax made some 80 hours of recordings in the state of Texas, his home state. (John was born in Mississippi in 1867, but his family moved to rural Bosque County, Texas, near Waco, just after his second birthday.) It’s a massive amount of material, reflecting an extraordinary diversity of vernacular traditions, and featuring the first and last recordings that John ...

On an unknown date in 1951, Irish playwright, essayist, and raconteur Brendan Behan sat down with Alan Lomax for an informal recording session, presumably at Radio Eireann in Dublin, where he sang bawdy material and Republican and Fenian songs, including the ballad of Joe Brady, alternately known as “The Fenian Blade,” presented in its entirety here (although the very last phrase somehow wasn’t...

I've been watching this same video for easily over 5 or 6 years and it never fails to give me chills. This right here, Mr. Belton Sutherland, is the personification of the Blues! An older Black Man smoking a self-rolled cigarette on his front porch while playing his guitar and singing his heart out. We've all said to our Ol'Lady at one time or another, "I want you to love me or leave me.. Anythang that you wanna do!" This is a GEM right here. God Bless Mr. Sutherland and long live his legacy and contribution to the BLUES!

Cold Mountains they are here around me, Cold waters gliding down the stream, Oh, in my sleep I think I find him, But when I wake it's all a dream. True, when I wake and cannot find him, All on my bed I weep and moan, Just like the raindrops without numbering, It's all because I'm left alone. I hate the time when I must leave you, I hate the time when we must part, Oh, though I've loved you without measuring, I'll give my hand you have my heart.
