Welcome to Jamestown Cooperage. I'm a cooper and keeper of the ancient skill of coopering. Even just 100 years ago, coopered wooden containers were essential for people in their daily lives. Today, I'm one of only a handful of practicing coopers who was trained by a traditionally-trained master cooper.
Whether or not you're a traditional wood worker, if you're interested the mechanics of coopering, this is the place to be.
I love what I do and use this channel to bring my work alive. I practice tight, dry, and white coopering and create accurate reproductions of period cooperage including hogsheads, barrels, firkins, butter churns, tubs, piggins, tankards and other coopered containers.
Head over to my website to purchase your own cooperage: www.jamestowncooperage.com/store and follow me on IG marshallscheetz.

I am a practicing traditional cooper who makes barrels, buckets, washtubs, and butter churns by hand. I use mostly traditional skills and handtools to build round, conical wooden vessels for history museums, national parks, and collectors.
Quarter Splitting a White Oak Log for making buckets and barrels
zhlédnutí 16KPřed 3 lety
This white oak log came from a 122 year old tree that fell in a storm in my neighbors backyard. Rather than burning it as firewood he let me split of sections of it for making wooden barrels and buckets.

Would you happen to have plans how how to make the staves for a 5 gallon barrel ? Thank you
『匠の技』ですね。 素晴らしい!!
One can tell you have the move
Do you put the wood in the water before you start making the barrel?
What is the smoke for

That was some fancy wood twirling at 0:48 ngl

Wow lots of skill and lots of labor to make 1 barrel !!!
I am very inspired by this 🥹! I am on it and I suffer from tunnel vision, that is once it is on the mind , won't be able to rest until I've achieved it . I will tell the wife , it's your fault 🤷♂️ .
Ok
😊
❤❤❤😂😂😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
What a skill! I really admire you.
I take off my hat! A real master!
Thats art.
Хорошая работа 👍 И материал хороший , похоже на дуб !!!🤘👏
The club has seen some things
Bro.... You must have a lot more time on your hands for this stuff than I do. I can't watch too much posing
Ειμαι απο ΕΛΛΑΔΑ Ωραιο βιντεο !!!!
Draw knife is so sharp it leaves a sheen on the wood like a plane. I am fairly certain I have the sun plane you were using for the original bevel on the head of the cask. As heavy as it is, I believe it is lignum vitae. Unfortunately, it is missing the iron and wedge.
All with hand tools, that aint easy work, respect!!
Mesmerising.
Most amazing thing I've seen all week!
You know what would be wacky? If you were a "copper", and your real last name was "Copper". Think about it....
This is exactly where the Cooper surname originated. It started as a way to differentiate between people with the same name: “Jack, the Cooper”, “Jack, the Smith”, etc. The surname Zimmerman is from German origin; zimmer is German for “room”, so Zimmerman is the “room man”, or builder of rooms (aka Carpenter).
Aside from a hatchet, a froe is my favorite wood working tool
These old skills are IMPORTANT to keep alive. Tech will eventually fail, and when it does…
Well if we all had the time to sit around and widdle alot of us could do this
Amazing. Absolutely beautiful.
Why do you wear your watch on your prominent hand?
One of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen! Not the end result, though that’s beautiful too but the “process” it was beautiful to watch! It saddens me to think how rare this skill is. I’m a professional wood worker myself but my hand too skills couldn’t hold a candle to yours! I honestly feel privileged to have seen you work, thank you for sharing. If only I lived near you, I’d offer you my humble assistance for free
Maravilloso! Eres mi dios nuevo!
Superb! Camera work and lighting are perfect. Narration is just right. Thanks for sharing these wonderful skills!
Well, I’m the first 30 seconds it’s clear that he can hatchet a board much straighter than I can rip with a handsaw! Very impressive.
👏👏👏👍👍👍🇧🇷
Wine barrel makers make it look easy to do , but when you try it , it is not lol.
I have NEVER EVER seen someone hewing so accurately by hand😮❤ you’ve got yourself a dedicated new subscriber
Why are you using a free branch instead of a steel hammer.
Less wear on the wedges
My parents are from Romania so I was very happy when I heard the language. Your skill and level of finish is impressive, thank you for the video and all your hard work! 🇺🇸🕊🇷🇴
Skill!
