I live in Japan, and as with US CPI stats, the inflation stats, and other government stats, are all massaged to provide the best face to keep fiscal spending fast and foot loose, as irresponsible politicians like it. Inflation in Japan is well in the double digits, and not the teens, for the last 2-3 years. A simple example is a can of coke was 100 yen, and now its is 130 yen. You can do the math on the % change, over one and a half years. I can understand Hanke’s argument that inflation did not jump from the 90s to 2017 or so, but the 2018 stimulus and then the 2020 pandemic stimulus going directly to the population, helicopter money, blew up inflation. Reporting from ground zero here.

For boomers and senior citizens, the current market and economy are unnecessarily harder. I'm used to simply purchasing and holding assets, which doesn't seem applicable to the current volatile market, and inflation is catching up with my portfolio. My biggest concern is whether I'll survive after retirement.

Roubini is flat out wrong about why banks send money slowly. It's not about regulation! The SWIFT system is a system that requires settlements between participant banks. Because between two client account you might have even 5 intervening banks, you might need 5 settlements before you credit the destination account, and even then you have a future value date. So the banking system is the reason why this takes so long, not the regulation of the governments - the regulation does make things worse but not the actual transit time.
