+megatwingo Hello, Mega! Yes, that old loco shed in Subcetate station was intended to be preserved and reused as a steam locomotives museum! Sadly that never happened and the steam locos were moved to other locations although this train station has it's special historic place in the romanian train history (more than 130 years of existence). +megatwingo Thank you, Mega! That old water standpipe is in Pui station luckily still remains in place along other few on Simeria-Petrosani line. Indeed, some stations have unusable old tracks that in the good old times were in full service condition! Greetings! :) Coco.

***** In Western Germany those water standpipes were nearly all scrapped in the 1970´s. Only some few remained in some hidden places and some were build up again by steam enthusiasts at some lines that were privately bought and converted to museum railway lines. But in Eastern Germany the steam engines remained in service much longer and so there are still relative many of those standpipes left in in the east. We have everywhere old tracks left, too. But in the last ten years many of the abandoned tracks were scrapped and much of the ground was sold to people who build houses, supermarkets and private houses there. The good thing is: They made money from unused ground. The bad thing is: All that ground can never be used for building up tracks again if it should be neccessary one day. That case happened already many times. But then it was too late because the houses were already build up there. Greetings Mega

+megatwingo There was a similar course of events back here as in DDR, with steam traction being gradually replaced by diesel (Sulzers and other DH/DE types) and electric traction (ASEA/Electroputere/Koncar) between 1965-1975. Since 1990s there were few money spent for preservation and repairs of steam locos, thus resulting in a very small number of working condition steam locomotives. Many lines were dismantled and sold as scrap for quick money due to lack of perspective about the very low cost in rail transport and the subsequent evolution on this domain. Perhaps a growing touristic demand would bring a better future for steam locos. Greetings! Coco.
