    I feel like this video would have benefited from talking about how other systems (palladium, WoD) handled magic. Also, why no Wu Jen? They were an interesting take on the wizard.

    I initially skipped on this when the stream first came out, then saw Glass Cannon do their shtick with it and thought it was more interesting than the other iterations of BRPs that I've played through already. I agree and like your takeaway that this really sets people up to role play their character. Though, watching through this really just made me want to try out L5R that much more. Thanks for the stream!

    About magic resistance in AD&D: “Standard” actually meant they got saving throws as per a fighter of their level (unless the monster had a unique clause like “saves as a cleric” or something). If they had actual magic resistance, it would list the % chance to completely negate the magic effect. In AD&D it was a percentage that was adjusted by 5% up or down based on a (I think it was) 11th level magic user. So if a creature had “Magic Resistance: 50%” then a level 12 magic user had a 55% chance to overcome it. In AD&D 2nd edition they changed it to a flat % chance, no adjusting up or down based on Magic User/Wizard level.

  • @queenannsrevenge100

    Let me throw another one at you for “being careful with your AD&D magic users in combat:” In AD&D, you had to declare your actions at the start of the combat round via a character acting as a caller when in combat. And THEN you rolled initiative die,and actions happened in a certain order. A magic user could cast an area spell, and if the players did not coordinate their actions, some PCs could accidentally wind up in the area of a magic user’s area spell. I once saw a thief flash-frozen when they went at a very low (fast) initiative and the magic user’s cone of cold went off to nail the same enemies that the thief was charging in to fight….

  • @queenannsrevenge100

    The material components of spells in AD&D were combinations of some sympathetic magic, but mostly Easter egg jokes. Ventriloquism spell was a paper cone for example - a megaphone. Message spell was a copper wire - like for a telephone. Etc. 😏

    Obligatory comment on the pronunciation of "coup de grâce" You're pronouncing it as "coup de gras" (Koo deh grah) which means "hit with fat". It should be pronounced "koo deh grass" (Sorry, as a French speaker I'm trying to avoid having the admittedly hilarious image of someone slapping their enemy with belly fat every time someone's down in an epic encounter)

We have been playing 5e for a while, and never seem to get the amounts of gold or treasure that people on line say always happens (I don't see this as a bad thing) but this means that people die, and we can't raise them. It means that the fights are harder than the online discourse implies. I enjoy it, but I can't imagine what outsiders might think of our game(s).

    I think Wrestler's Whirling Throw is way better than stated: 1. There's no Multiple Attack Penalty (it's not a Grapple action), so good chance to do damage after 2 strikes. 2. If you do whirling throw on melee combatant on the turn before their's, they need to spend action (or more) running back to join the fray.

    • @KnightsofLastCall
      @KnightsofLastCall Před 6 dny

      I'll buy that. Keep in mind that you spent on action just to initiate the Grapple itself (which has little return on investment damage wise)... the advantage being that you've made them immobolized... but by throwing them you lose that benefit.

    You've got me hooked! I'm now listening on my way to and from work. I really enjoyed this one as Mages/Wizards have always been my favorite. I ran a solo adventure for a friend of mine from 1987-1992. During that time, he attained 7th level. Over the next 15 years, with both of us having joined the Air Force, we met up every so often, and he picked up a few levels. In 2007, we started gaming online using Fantasy Grounds. He played that character until reaching 14th Level. I converted his AD&D Magic-User to a 3.5 Wizard. Now, my friend's character is the son of the Wizard's NPC Ranger friend. The adventure continues...

    One of the big problems with Sorcerers is the fact they still use spells in the first place. These are people using RAW MAGIC; like if you think them using a scroll feels nonsense, USING THE SAME STANDARDIZED POWERS FEELS JUST AS DUMB! By all means, something mechanically like the Kinetisist seems to fit closer to the Sorcerer flavor than what we got

    I love how weak the wizard is to start out (in old editions), then becomes all powerful and unbalanced in the end. I think it should be that way--can't stand when all classes have to be perfectly 'balanced' with one another, doesn't make sense. But that's just me. I'm biased towards 2e ad&d and BECMI. Death is a real threat, things are regularly 'unfair.' That's life, kid.

      The issue with this in modern ttrpgs is that many groups don't start at 1st level. Higher level one shots are reasonably common, and even campaigns starting a higher levels isn't unheard of. So you lose the early game grind for unlimited power later aspect, since you can just jump to the unlimited power later part.

    Loved your stream. As an old L5R CCG player, I was Clan Scorpion. It was marvelous while it lasted. However, just so you know, some of the decisions made that changed the world of Rokugan, eventually backed the company in a corner and created situations so absurd, that it had to be rebooted. Not all player decisions made for a good story.

    There are a couple tweaks I plan to make to future 4e games to encourage ritual use. The first is to give a big chunk of treasure in the form of components rather than coins. The second is to limit how much of the components can be sold. The village apothecary will only buy so much bat guano.

    In AD&D 1e, was there a method to increase your ability scores, or would a magic user with 15 int for example (which from what i understand is already pretty high) never be able to cast spells of 8th level or higher?

    • @queenannsrevenge100
      @queenannsrevenge100 Před 2 dny

      There were magical means to improve ability scores, but they were not guaranteed, and usually left for the DM and player to discuss. Often, unique means were introduced in the adventures themselves - the DM may introduce a magical pool that gave a 1-point permanent boost to ability score, for example. Beyond that, there were things like magic manuals for one-use score boost. (Tome of Intellect for INT, Manual of Bodily Heath for CON, etc.) But it was also possible that a DM who wasn’t very good might be very antagonistic, and you were stuck with your stat.

    I haven't gotten to do this yet, but I would think that you could run a Pf2e campaign without clerics. Since so much is available out of combat it would just be up to the party to work well and/or have other in combat healing options (battle medicine, primal casters, etc.) and up to the GM to make sure they don't use too sever/extreme encounters.

    My homebrew class of "Cleric" is basically a rework of spells on top of the Class. Being level 1-5 allows you to convert 1 action to another Prayer Reaction, and so forth until 3+1= 4 reactions per round at level 11. Why? Because I added Mitigation style spells that can be cast as a Reaction and it is (for me, at least) very on point on the fantasy of a Living Saint being able to protect with quick prayers, going into a full defense priest. Most players just convert 1 action into a Reaction, so they have 2 Reactions per round and cast a normal spell with the remaining 2 actions. It just works, and people love not being healbots and having this reactionfest class. Also, in my homebrew having a "buff" spell on you is the same as maintaining a magical object, so people aren't going around buffed all the time and only use the ones they need for the mission.
