Delirious in the Sun
We started full of energy and with an ambitious plan to ski a line on the Weisshorn on the Flüela pass, but the heat made our life harder than expected. I finished my water rather early and struggled a lot going uphill in the end.

A Lovely Day in Lyngen
zhlédnutí 180Před 21 dnem
On one of our last days in Norway we were surprised by the really good weather and we went to Lyngen again to go to Rørnestinden to do a mellow ski tour since we were starting to be tired. After getting to the summit, we spotted a nice bowl that was pretty much untracked, so we found a way to get there.

This was a day of indecision because the weather was uncertain. We were undecided whether to stay around Tromsø or go to Lyngen, whether to go Storgalten or Russelvfjellet. We ended up racing the clouds to find a window of good weather and had a great day. If you want a sneak peak into what will be coming to the channel, check my Instagram profile.

    @Largo-qe7lj Před měsícem

    Hi Giovanni. You are correct that if you don't ski any risk 3 days then you will miss many good backcountry days. However, it is important to realise that the risk 3 band is very wide. There is a huge difference between a risk 3 day the day after it was risk 4, and a risk 3 day the day before it goes to risk 2. Personally I consider the nuances or the avalanche report and what I am seeing on the mountain and then I actively decide if a risk 3 day is a high or low risk 3, and I make route choices accordingly. The day before your accident, 14th Dec, was risk 4! The 15th Dec was risk 3+ on all aspects over 2000m and the comments clearly indicate that the risk was a very high 3, almost a risk 4. "The fresh snow and the wind slabs formed by the northwesterly wind are prone to triggering. Natural avalanches are possible, even large ones. Even single winter sport participants can release avalanches easily. Off-piste activities call for caution and restraint." I treat this sort of day the same as I treat a risk 4 day - I stay conservative choosing slopes that are less steep and less exposed to risk. And I am not just saying that with hindsight. From the video it looks like you skied a big, open mountain face with a sustained 35-40 degrees. It looks like your route went over a convexity/rollover too. If you are honest with yourself, that route was a very poor choice for that particular day. Luckily it looks like the crown wasn't that deep. Plus, as others have said, to go back and ski the same face (same altitude, same aspect) that has just avalanched is generally a poor choice even if the route is safer (eg no rollovers?). The fact that, with hindsight, it didn't avalanche, doesn't make it a sound decision. But it's hard to comment without seeing the slope. I also analysed my mistakes after I was caught in an avalanche and re-visiting the avalanche reports was part of that process. So I am surprised that you didn't remember the avalanche report for that day and preceeding days. I write all this in the spirit of learning. I've done over 15 seasons, attended 3 avalanche courses over the years and taught avalanche rescue, and I like to think I give route decisions a lot of thought. Yet I know that I have often got away with bad route choices and that I fall prey to common heuristics - greed for powder, FOMO, goal orientation, over familiarity etc. Thank you for sharing your experience, it's admirable that you consider your mistakes. Hopefully we can all learn from this.

    • @giovannisaccarola
      @giovannisaccarola Před měsícem

      First of all, thank you for your very well thought out comment. I see that you really went through the comments and check the avy report before writing it. I agree with most of what you are saying, but I believe there was a safe way to ride that face and the main mistake was to line choice on that face. That is also why I went back and skied a completely different line. We can have a long discussion if I was taking too much risk by being on that face, but I feel that was acceptable for me. Before starting to ski we planned a safe way down with safe spots to wait for each other, but somehow I decided to check this different zone before going to the safe route. I realized rather soon that it wasn't a good choice to ski the line I was skiing and I was too lazy to hike back to get back on the safe way down. The avalache happend while I was doing the few turns that I needed before I could traverse to the safe spot. It might not be clear from the video, but there were some rocks on my right that I needed to go around either by hiking back up or by doing those few turns.

      @@giovannisaccarola it might be a good opportunity to do a follow up video recapping what you and your group did right (waiting & watching as one rider rode through at a time) and what you would do differently. You could also submit an avalanche report to your local avalanche agency so others can be aware of a potential side country slide path as well as the lessons learned. If you’re interested in doing that I would return to the incident scene, dig an avalanche pit in a safe zone outside the slide zone to perform a pressure test & study the layers looking for the weak layer, measure the dimensions of path, etc. It could be fun, educational and bring you some closure on processing the incident. During one my avy courses, I investigated and submitted an avalanche incident report for a slide my friend was involved in, in which he almost died from a compound femur fracture. In summary, I concluded that five actions occurred that together gave him enough time to survive until he was rescued. Thankfully, US Naval Air rescue flew 125 miles and performed a nighttime extraction at 10,000 feet (3050 meters). They used the opportunity as a “live training exercise” for their crew. If he would have had to wait for the ground rescue, he would have likely died from blood loss and exposure.

      Good decision making is critical for avoiding avalanches. I’ve been out on two big days (1.7-2 meter snowfall) which people died in slides just outside Sugarbowl ski area boundaries. One guy was an upcoming pro snowboarder, who while looking for a famous cliff drop walked out onto a massive cornice. Apparently he left his avy beacon in his vehicle. The debris field was shockingly small, like the area of a large living. He was found 6 feet down, inverted. So the debris depth was massive. When I first heard the EMS sirens during both incidents, I was with my same buddy at the same location on the adjacent ski area, getting ready to drop into 5 feet of well-tracked and controlled snow. I get an eerie feeling whenever I return there, knowing what the sound of sirens on big pow days usually mean.

Even single winter sport participants can release avalanches easily. Off-piste activities call for caution and restraint.". Thats pretty risky to go into more than 30° terrain if the monitor says it explicitly like it does there. I think this should be the main takeaway from this incident...

    • @giovannisaccarola
      @giovannisaccarola Před 2 měsíci

      I don't completely agree but that has to do with a personal choice about risk tolerance. I probably wouldn't do most of the skiing I am doing if I would refrain from going on slopes over 30° every time the avalanche danger is 3 or above. I agree that most people have a lower risk tolerance or don't have the experience to manage it and should completely avoid this kind of terrain after reading such avy report. I read the avalanche forecast every day I ski, but I believe it is too generic to use it for all your decisions. I had to turn back when the danger was low according to the forecast many times because the snow problem I have encountered was not described there. In my opinion, my mistake was reading the situation mostly right but believing I had the margin to do the few turns I needed to get out of there instead of climbing back up.

Also, seems like your friends had no idea what was going on, and you didn't talk to them enough. Finally, why did you go back to the slope where the avalanche was triggered? It's a pretty wide slope with plenty other sections of same exposure and steepness, which could also potentially slide... I really don't understand your decisions.

      I don't remember the forecast for that day, but I think that is not the point. I agree that this was a case of bad decision making and I want to share it because it can be a learning experience for other people. I read the situation right but made the wrong decision. I was pretty sure there was a wind slab because of the way the snow felt and the shape of the terrain. I did have a shovel in my backpack and all the rest of the avalanche equipment and I would never adventure off piste without. It might not be clear from the video, but I think we handled the communication quite well by planning safe spots and exposing only me to the danger until I was sure. I went back to the same slope because there was a safe way down where I told my friends to ski in case they could not follow me.

      @@giovannisaccarola I think it is pretty relevant, indeed. If it was level 3 and the slope was over 30°, the risk of triggering an avalanche is pretty high. If that was the case, riding that slope was a bad decision. You stop and tell your friends that it feels unsafe, but you still continue skiing right into the middle of that slab. fair enough about the avalanche gear, and also about the safe spots - I think it's hard to see in the clip, but if those were actually safe, then good on you. going back into the same exposure, I don't know about that, seems like pretty poor decision making to me.

      @@schonni8390 continuing to ski into the slab was a mistake. The slab started below where I told my friend not to come and I don't think I was in danger until there. From there the right decision, would be to go back up and ski down the safe way that we agreed before starting.

    Would be nice to know more about snow conditions: ava forecast, how old was snow, how did the wind impact snow (was it a wind slab that you triggered?), how the elevation and aspect of the snow related to the ava forecast. Also, why did you feel uncomfortable? Did you notice something?

      I wanted to put more focus on the decision making because that is what put me in that situation. It happened on the 15th of December 2023, so what I remember might not be what I observed at the time. I triggered a wind slab that I was pretty sure was there because of the shape of the terrain and the way the snow felt above during the few turns I made before telling my friends to not come. I don't remember the avy forecast for that day except that the danger level was 2 or 3. I am happy to answer any other questions:)

      Thanks! Very useful to put this recording in the context of the bulletin! It looks like the steepness is close but less than 30 deg, would you agree? @@giovannisaccarola
