Packing Joe's Camera Bag - What's Going to Europe?

Using Lightroom Classic (and a bit of Nik Viveza) to Bring Out the Full Beauty of a Dark Image

Since we are planning our return to Central Utah this November (here’s the Workshop Link! - bit.ly/4cxiCQ3), I was reviewing some old images from the area that I hadn’t gotten around to editing. As I was scrolling in Lightroom, I came across this dramatic, but very dark, shot of a passing storm in Snow Canyon State Park. I had obviously exposed to protect the bright clouds, but the foreground w...
Big Impact with Subtle Color Changes with Lightroom & Photoshop

Small color adjustments often have a big effect on the quality of your images, but it’s common for those adjustments to be needed locally rather than globally. In today’s image demonstration, we start off in Lightroom Classic, but then move over to Photoshop for some color adjustments that are simply easier and more precise than making color changes in Lightroom. We will do separate color edits...

Rainbow Falls Comes to Life in Lightroom - Creating Impact and Beauty with Color and Light

This Lightroom Classic edit of Rainbow Falls in Watkins Glen State Park shares an approach to raw, high contrast landscape shots that initially look nothing like the scene you saw with your eyes. This is a magical scene, and it deserved spending some time both finding the perfect spots, but waiting for a time to minimize the number of people who would have to be removed in software. How and Why to Profile your Monitor - The Key to Getting Consistently Great Photo Prints!

    Your final result is very nice, basically a picture within the picture. I would also have liked to see a less tight crop (especially in the sky) with the same editing. Also, I do not use Viveza but it seems to me that you could have added the equivalent of structure and the other adjustments using the LR masks?

    I've been semi-following you for some ten years and getting some good ideas. There are so many people that insist on using Adobi products to edit but I find owning my own program to be the best. After purchasing Capture One some six years ago, I find it to be more than what most people need to use and a lot less expensive because I don't need to repurchase it or continue a rental program. Sure some of the latest and greatest actions are shorter for every modern program out there but by taking my time I can perform a very similar action. Thank you for your great ideas.

    Your closing thought reminds me of one of the lines in "the Rounders" from 1965 with Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda: "Whatever suits you just tickles me plumb to death." Nice example of how to treat high dynamic range. I'd also see how a 3:1 crop looks to fit a standard size frame. Thanks.

    What is the best brightness value for the monitor? Should I base it on the ambient light read by the device or is the 120cd/m2 the accepted standard? What about the Temp? D65 D50 etc?

    • @JoeBradyPhotography
      @JoeBradyPhotography Před měsícem

      The brightness setting of the monitor depends on ambient light levels. 120 cd/m2 is the standard for a normally lit room, while in a dimly lit room (which is best for precise editing) a number around 80 cd/m2 is best. Monitors should be calibrated at 6500K, not D50 (or 5000K) because that is their built-in standard. Calibrating to 5000K will make the monitor appear too yellow.

    Why don't you check and compare corrected colorchecker rgb colors with those provided by the manufacturer? Basically no one dare to do it, beucase it would be a disappointment... better just talk about it... You just blindly accept that the new look is correct, but not. It would be even bigger disappointment to create a color profile using colorchecker passpoer and taking pic of a colorchecker digital SG using the profile created by the passport... Don't do it, just use the colorchecker and be happy with the toy and happy shooting!
