Anxiety Part 2
“I am much more anxious” [MISS] Four episodes ago, we began a discussion about anxiety in the Sherlock Holmes stories. We managed to make from A Study in Scarlet up through The Hound of the Baskervilles. What about the rest of the Canon? Worry not! We continue the journey from The Return through The Case-Book. While Sherlock Holmes shows some anxiety in this half of the Canon, we'll find that his clients and others are more anxious. It's just a Trifle. Do you have a topic you'd like to recommend? Email us at trifles@ihearofsherlock.com and if we use your idea on the air, we'll send you a thank-you gift. Sherlock Holmes: Trifles - Victorian Aventuresses
zhlédnutí 51Před dnem
“she seems indeed to be on a very different level” [SCAN] There is one woman in the entire Canon of Sherlock Holmes stories that we can instantly recall as an adventuress. You know who we're talking about. Can you think of at least one other off the top of your head? We'll help with that. Plus, we'll explore just how the term "adventuress" evolved and what it meant in polite society. It's just ...

“concealed it at Mapleton” [SILV] This month's Mr. Sherlock Holmes the Theorist episode goes back to 1949 to Volume 4, Number 1 of The Baker Street Journal and Jay Finley Christ's article "Silver Blaze: An Identification (as of 1893 A.D.). Here Christ looks at what contemporary readers of the Strand would have thought of Watson's tale, specifically identifying which horse Silver Blaze was suppo...

“quick insight into character” [BERY] As Americans, it is always a joy to meet an Englishman, and doubly so if he portrays Sherlock Holmes. Luke Barton has done that not only on stage but in audiobooks as well. Our conversation with Luke explores how he has prepared for his many appearances as Holmes on stage - including one production in which he alternated the roles of Holmes and Watson. His ...
Sherlock Holmes: Trifles - The Geography of the Hound of the Baskervilles

“I flatter myself that I could find my way about.” [HOUN] Dartmoor and its surroundings provided the perfect setting for The Hound of the Baskervilles. Not only did the area have a sense of history (and prehistory) about it, but the sparse surroundings added to the mystique. And the wonderful part is that if we were to set foot there in 2024, we would recognize the landmarks and even some of th...

“weighed down with some great anxiety” [FIVE] Where would Sherlock Holmes be without fear and anxiety? It was a common state of mind for a number of his clients, but Holmes himself also exhibited anxious behavior from time to time. In which stories can we find anxiety? Don't be nervous; we have 10 examples. But there are still more to come that will feature in a discussion in a second part. It'...

“remarkably rich tenor voice” [VALL] Following the feedback we got from our previous Legends of the BSJ episode on Edgar W. Smith (czcams.com/video/WGMV_in_MQ4/video.html), we thought we'd continue with another. This time, it's James Montgomery, BSI ("The Red Circle"), who was a frequent correspondent with Smith. Montgomery played an important role in the development of the Baker Street Journal...
Sherlock Holmes: Trifles: Maps & Floorplans

“I sent down to Stamford's for the ordinance map” [HOUN] In a number of instances in the Sherlock Holmes stories, we find ourselves guided by maps. Not only as critical elements of the plot, but also as visual aids to readers. In which stories do we find maps? And what about those that required floorplans to be sketched out as well? It's just a Trifle. This topic was suggested by listener Ron G...
Sherlock Holmes: Trifles - Sherlock Holmes, Linguist

“he is a remarkable linguist” [GREE] Sherlock Holmes has been translated into scores of languages all around the world (just ask Don Hobbs). But what languages was he fluent in or have passing familiarity with? This is the question Dean W. Dickensheet tackles in Vol. 10 No. 3 of The Baker Street Journal in his article "Sherlock Holmes - Linguist." It's the latest in our series looking at old Sh...
A West Wind

“we turned our faces westward” [SIXN] While Sherlock Holmes is a perennial British subject, his influence in and by America cannot be denied. Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes were admirers of the United States, and A West Wind, a recent BSI Press book, delves into that relationship. Co-editors Ray Betzner, BSI ("The Agony Column") and Tom Horrocks, BSI ("Colonel Sebastian Moran") join us to talk...

“seventeen years of age” [SIGN] Mycroft Holmes spoke for all of us in "The Greek Interpreter" when he greeted Dr. Watson with the fateful line: “I hear of Sherlock everywhere since you became his chronicler.” And yes, in our minds, we'll always hear that line in the voice of the inimitable Charles Gray in the Granada series - a sound clip that serves as the opening for our podcast introduction....

“We have three years of the past to discuss” [EMPT] Once again, we pack our Gladstone bags and prepare for an episode where we travel. This time, we head to Sussex Downs and then across the Atlantic to New York in some of the early years of Sherlock Holmes's retirement. What brings us there comes from the fertile imagination of Les Klinger, who posits a connection between Sherlock Holmes, Wilso...
Sherlock Holmes: Trifles - Elderly in the Canon

“his age, and an affliction” [STOC] The panoply of elderly individuals in the Sherlock Holmes stories is impressive: Mr. Frankland, the old crank in The Hound of the Baskervilles, the miserly Josiah Amberley in "The Retired Colourman," Old Mr. Farquhar, the previous owner of Watson's practice. But there were many others, some of whom go almost unnoticed. What similarities do we see among them? ...

“the flooring was also thoroughly examined” [SPEC] Cocoanut matting, bearskin rug, carpets - there are a number of notable floor coverings mentioned in the Sherlock Holmes stories. What do we know about the history of linoleum, how was it...

Too much boring chat get on with Holmes. No reason to keep on and on.
This is like telling the Car Talk guys to dispense with the humor and banter and just answer calls about car repair.
"I like your cunning linguistics". Oh my....😆
Yay David!
Yay Ray!
" I hear of Sherlock everywhere " 🔎
Indeed!
The game is afoot...again 🎻🔎
This is like an audio Annotated Sherlock.
What a great way of putting it, Jon!
Scott Monty and Burt Walder I absolutely love your podcast. Keep up the good work.
We'll do our best!
"I wonder about Sherlock Holmes and autism" I think about that every day!
"Neurodiversity" is an insulting term to the severely autistic and their families. "Neurodiversity" promotes acceptance of autism as the new normal and reduces the urgency to deal with this terrible disease afflicting our children at an exponential rate. It's a disease. It's preventable. Read Denial by Olmstead and Blaxill and Ending the Autism Epidemic by JB Handley.
As a Sherlock Holmes aficionado, I cannot say enough how much I love the show. In fact, I even use playlists of older episodes as sleep ambience (not because you are ever boring). Thanks for all the engaging discussions and, as always, the game's a foot! :)
Thank you! So grateful to have dedicated fans like you and we're glad we can provide a pleasant background for your sleep habits as well as your wide awake listening habits.
Coming soon from Stephen Spielberg: Jurassic Bark.
This is awesome.
Watson may be a man, but he is also Holmes' wife. That's the obvious compromise 🕵
My wife has expressed an interest in being named The Woman someday....
Hey, since you guys sometimes take suggestions, have you noticed how absurdly loyal Moriarty's henchmen are to him? Even after he lost all his money, even after his death, his gang was loyal to him. I've always wondered about that. The hatred Moran had for Holmes seems too intense.
That's curious. Perhaps something worth exploring...
Where's the theme song? 😢
Oh dear
CAM and Identity are both in my top 10, i can't believe I never made that connection before!
Love your channel long live Sherlock Holmes
Really fascinating. Thank you so much!
The first major, modern system of shorthand was invented by Samuel Taylor in 1786.
Lovely! Thank you.
We see what you did there. 😉
Can’t get anything past you guys! 😊
Big like number 2 and subscribed! Excellent video and thank you so much for sharing
A fine yarn, mes amis !
Absolutely lovely!😊
Glad you like it!
Great episode! Fun that you have an intro from Bill Curtis of “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me”! The interview with Alistair Duncan piques my interest in his books. And how exciting that Lucy Worsley is doing a series on Sherlock Holmes and ACD!
3 minutes and 45 seconds before the podcast begins. Wayyyyyy too long.
Sorry for inconveniencing you, Geno. There's a fast forward button if you'd care to use it. As creators, we need to be mindful of people who may have found us for the first time, as well as long-time listeners. It can be a tough balance.
@@ihearofsherlock thanks for the reply. I have noticed a lot of content creators have got rid of intro’s and boom, right into the podcast and run sponsors half way through. It was the first podcast of yours that I had listened to and first impressions are important. Btw, i did enjoy the podcast.
The game is afoot!
Always!
you music is too "frantic" and way too loud.........WAY TOO LOUD
I have listened to most of your Podcasts, and I am a Patreon member of both Trifles and IHOSE. I must say, with all due respect, while I sincerely enjoyed all the pieces you have presented to us, I liked this one the least.
Does this "workmanlike" piece of reasoning ever address why the proposed explanation involves a gulp of cormorants, perhaps even several, while Watson quotes Holmes referring to one single, distinct, individual?
As a Costa Rican woman myself, I have always been fascinated by Beryl and her story.
Marcia Wilson's stories are cool.
That block of Baker Street didn't exist so it could have any windows Doyle could imagine.
Obviously it's bigger on the inside than the outside.

Sorry about that; the winner was Olivia Kirkendall.

I need a Watson and not just to save the corner seats. I need someone that I can rely on.
Lovely!😊
Always, enjoyable! Thank you.😊
I've read all the Doyle Holmes and one thing that always struck me was Mary, Watson's Wife. The many times that the Dr. approached her with his desire or need to meet or go with Holmes, even on long trips, she always had a few opinions on why he SHOULD GO, but I can't recall once, not even one word ever, on why he SHOULD NOT GO. Kind of unbelievably strange. Is she the most agreeable wife ever, or could there be an anterior motive. I doubt it, but she has to take the cake as the nicest, most understanding wife ever. THOUGHTS?
She was a keeper!
Is it me, or does Sherlock have a boner? A boner for books?
1916년 음악이라고는 생각되지 않네😮
Simply excellent…as usual. Thank you. I never am sure whether you prefer us to listen here, on Patreon or your podcast. Wherever it may be, you both are masterful conversationalists and hold our attention from the very beginning to the very last word…but, that is just a trifle.😊
We're delighted to have you listen to us wherever you prefer, Susan! Thank you for your kind remarks and for being a faithful listener.
