This is one of my favorite movies of all time and one I watch often on Tubi. But as a pianist and teacher there are things that bug me about Dreyfuss’ performance. One, a true pianist would not move his hands in and out of the keys the way he does on the descending chords. Picky, I know, but doesn’t represent a real pianist. Secondly…orchestra musicians would NEVER EVER make a point of turning to each other during a performance to remind each other of what was rehearsed. That was just laughable. Now, having gotten that off my chest….major kudos to Amy Irving, whose “faking” of the Prokofiev was so spot on it was hard to believe she wasn’t actually playing. And bravo to Daniel Pollock who did record it. Great movie!

Sam is wrong. He meant well, but he was wrong. The very fact that the SCOTUS is interpreting the Constitution as they see fit is the very reason that gun violence is so out of control. If every SCOTUS judge in history had treated the 2nd Amendment exactly as written? Mass shootings carried out by non-military personnel in America would be almost nil. If a state wants to ban coffee creamer? As stupid as it is, it is none of the SCOTUS's business. Unless an Amendment is passed specifically giving every American the right to coffee creamer. The main problems with the SCOTUS (imo) are that it is too political and it is too anxious to butt in to matters that are none of its business. Sometimes they should do the latter. But only rarely and very, very carefully. Neither of which they do today. Thanks for posting this great scene. ☮

The context: When Dreyfuss played 'Beethoven Piano Concerto No 5' which I like, I understand the melodic aspects, the storytelling called forth in my mind, I don't have fancy music words. Music to me is like wine, I know what I like. I don't get this, no idea what Prokofiev was trying to do to paint a picture. It doesn't grab me like Robert Schumann or Beethoven. This movie came on AFN TV I think in 1983. I was adopted in 1977, spent three or four years having my common bile duct and others areas of my liver rotor rooted every so often to keep me going. In 81 my liver was no shit cut out, ducts and stuff rooted and stints placed, arteries rerouted then sewn back to where livers belong. So I began to heal into a healthy enough 10 year old to join my family, dad stationed in Italy. The final score, Prokofiev 's 3rd I was mesmerize, in tears not because I liked it, I'll take Vivaldi over Prokofiev any day, yet genius is recognized instantly by those who are not jealous. Growing up in Italy, where better to learn about & appreciate the music of the past? Maybe Vienna? Today this movie was on Japanese TV. The music had the same effect on adoptive daughter Lian; my little buddy at 11 nearly the same age as I in 1983. Lian likes it wanted more, more, so we found Prokofiev's 'Music for Children' which even a halfwit like Lian's baba can sort of mostly understand. I can't fail to understand what happened in Lian today, she is hooked for life. Watching this change in real time from believing that music is a pain in her a$$ to "more, more" is a real privilege. Often adoptive parents aren't present to see 1st steps or hear 1st words however moments like this aren't any less important. Edit: Or Mozart czcams.com/video/4Y3BVk2N2fQ/video.html

It has been used and accepted as the protection of expression for over 200 years. The same with the 2nd amenment to own firearms. The first amendment doesn't say "freedom of speech", it includes "freedom of religion, of speech and of the press, the right to assembly and protest against government", all can be categorized and has been categorized under the umbrella of expression. 6:38. Richard Dreyfuss acts with his face. Here, his look of triumph shows he just gave the performance of his life. Compare that with the beginning of the movie, where he finishes the same piece in the Cincinnati competition, and shows his disappointment.

The only silly thing about this scene is the idea that a Democratic administration would ever consider nominating a rigid Textualist like Harrison in the first place.

Considering that the current members of the court have overturned Roe v. Wade opening the floodgates for state interference with women’s reproductive choices and thereby totally negating their right to privacy, this is spot on.

"That's not up to me" I flinch every time I hear that. The man has almost as much power as God yet he's ducking and weaving and trying to skirt his responsibility to make society a better place.

Judges are not Gods and that is not their responsibility. They must adjudicate cases, no matter how happy or sad they are with the law. If you want it to be otherwise, it is the legislature the one who must make the changes.

@@jfallas At the time there was concern about the 5-4 conservative majority on the supreme court. Later in the show Amy makes a comment like "They could overturn Roe in the future" and it was considered a worst case scenario at the time. Now that the conservatives have a 6-3 majority, Roe has been overturned which has undermined the rights of millions of American women. So you better believe that with the "checks and balances" style of modern republics, that all three branches of government have a responsibility to make society a better place. In saying that "Only congress can write laws" you may as well be saying that the president has no power to do anything either, which if you've watched the show, you can clearly see that's not the case.

@@Gredddfe Roe was a bad decision, whether you are for or against abortion. There was no reason for the Court to decide whether aborion had to be legal or not. This was something that was up to each state to decide. Which is what the overturn of Roe did. It devolved the decision to the states. The President has powers. But he does not have the power to make laws. Neiher the court. Otherwise, it would be a tiranny. The legislature makes the laws. Of course for liberals it was very easy for much of the time to push their own agenda thru the Courts instead of convincing the majority. Now they have to explain and convince that having unlimited aborion up to 9 months is reasonable. Or perhaps agree to a compromise on an earlier date.
