Serviettenknödel was cooked inside a very big napkin originally. The dough was put onto the napkin and the napkin was rolled up into a wurstlike shape and fixated before putting it into the water. Otherwise the dough would not become a Knödel but disolve into the water. We have both kinds when we have rouladen and the filled savory kind (Leberwurst) with cream sauce and bacon.

Farmers' markets are common in tiny villages to big city neighborhoods all along the West Coast and in the Northeast where the majority of the population live, and they have honey, and I have never seen it cost anything like $20 for a standard middle jar. Paper plates? Maybe at a takeout stand but not at home. Who serves guests on paper? I have never seen that anywhere in an American home, doesn't mean you haven't, but the generalization seems extreme. Our farmers' markets also have real bread, and real cheese, and real meat if you want it. I do agree that heated towel racks are rare. I don't think it is a question of luxury as much as something that relatively few people care about. I also agree that heated floors are not common (they were included in slab floor housing in the 60s, though.) The work life balance is definitely a problem (so are benefits) in the US - though not as extreme as in e.g. Japan or China.

Farmers' markets are all over the US. I have shopped in FMs all around the Northeast, in California, in TX. Honey is available at most of them and I have never paid the prices you have mentioned. You must be in some very rural location or perhaps in a food desert

I had only 5 or 6 contacts with German police. Even when I was wrong, they were very polite and friendly. When I asked for help, they were extremely helpful and sometimes offered help without being asked for. I don't know if it was pure luck, but I've only had the very best experiences with German police officers all my life. To be fair, however, my only experience with a US police officer was also very positive. He refrained from penalising me even though I was speeding.

There are two types of patriots is the US. There is the flag waving “my country right our wrong” patriot that gets their undies severely bunched by people like you (and me) questioning things. They despise patriots like me who embrace the democratic ideals we were propagandized with throughout our education. We believe in those ideals and, when our country doesn’t live up to them, apply pressure to change our policies to better line up with our stated ideals. The “my country right or wrong” patriots hate us for criticizing and pushing for change as they think saying our country of the best and don’t need to change is the way to show love for our country. I think the way to show love for my country is to do the work to make it better. I’d be curious if the “my country right or wrong” patriots have this fixed mindset about loyalty bleed into their family and other personal relationships. Based on personal observation, I assume the latter type of patriots are more likely to be open for change in relationships and in oneself toward ones ideals but I obviously have too small a sample set to declare anything universally true.

Hmmm. Dear Haley, This idea of arming children was SPEAKED OUT by an NRA leader a few years ago! Yes, he is in favor of arming KIDS so that they can defend themselves against the armed intruder. A wonderful idea according to the NRA. Small weapons (suitable size for the hands of kindergarten children) are to be developed for this purpose. Well, and then let's think further.... ....If you don't give me the Lego bricks immediately (four-year-old to two-year-old) then.... ....PENG. ....I don't want to do that! three-year-old to kindergarten teacher. ....PENG. If some screenwriter in Hollywood wrote a script like that, he'd be immediately dismissed as completely insane. Which begs the question: Why are people who want to promote gun violence and people who support it not picked up by the boys in green and sent to a psychiatric clinic? Isn't that being done now because, firstly, the NRA would be leaderless and, secondly, pretty much all politicians in the USA would also have to be psychologically examined? Those were two rhetorical questions. Kind regards from Germany

Love your observations, I was an exchange student in the US in 1989 - I missed real bread so much. I tried to bake a German cake - never tasted the same either. Her are two bread recipes: Einfaches helles Brot (geht ganz schnell): 500g Weizenmehl Typ 405 oder Dinkelmehl 2-3 g Trockenhefe oder 5-10 g frische Hefe 10g Salz 400 ml Wasser Verrühren, mindestens eine Stunde, besser länger gehen lassen, bei 250 Grad C mit Deckel backen - fertig. Körnerbrot in Kastenform: Je 250g Weizenmehl 250g Roggenmehl 1 Päckchen Trockenhefe oder 20g Frischhefe 500ml Wasser 1 EL Honig 2 EL Kerne (z.B. Kümmel und Koriander) 10 g Salz Verrühren und gehen lassen Bei 180 Grad C 60-70 min backen

I drove long time ago on I80 between Reno and San Francisco, I saw a fire in the woods and I wanted to report it to 911. Someone from the highway patrol answered me and they asked me to give them the location, I answered with the I 80, mile and direction/which side of the highway were the fire. The weren't OK with that and repeated again and again: Where are you! I ask her to tell me what info want exactly from me because I am a foreigner and I do not know exactly how to report an incident in the US. The answer I perceived as very rude: "If you are not from US that doesn't mean you cannot read or spell." I was really shocked. After a while I told that I was in the parking lot of a Mc Donald's restaurant and the town was xxxx. I realized that they wanted not to know where that fire was but the place where I really was in that moment. They transferred my call to the fire department and it was a huge difference between Police and Firemen. The fireman are better trained and they impressed me a lot. The knew how to communicate exactly what they want but very friendly and concise.

Another American hypocrisy: Pretending to have abolished slavery. Read the 13th Amendment-carefully-and then inquire who's fighting the wildfires in California.

  • @frankheilingbrunner7852

Regarding electoral choice in America: If you render a candidate unelectable by withholding your vote on the ground that the candidate is unelectable, the system is not the problem, you are the problem. And don't talk to me about Trump. Trump is what you get after voting for the lesser evil for decades and never figuring out that when you vote for the lesser evil you vote for evil.

  • @RustyDust101
    @RustyDust101 Před dnem

Completely support you, Hayley. I don't hate the USA, I see the points of criticism and voice those criticisms. That's not hating. However, there are certain individuals how equal voicing criticism with instant and utter opposition to something. It's a dichotomy of choice; not a spectrum of scale. To blow their little minds, if you introduce a third or even fourth (mathematically possible) axis of specificity, you can almost see the smoke rising from their ears as the gears in their brains grind to a halt. That makes discussing such topics very... let's say, unproductive. I've always posited that the US election system prevents the necessary adaptation as it is stuck in the 18th century. It violently opposes ANY form of compromise among political parties by handing the win to not necessarily the popular vote, but to a minority. IF the USA were a true democracy with each vote counting equal value, even IF the election of the president remained a direct result (instead of voting via the electoral college) of the votes, even then the Republicans would stand little to no chance of ever fielding a presidential candidate again. Thanks to the power of the states with far smaller populations being HIGHLY overrepresented in their voting power the Republicans don't even have to have any kind of positive party programm, they just need to scare their party base enough to never even consider voting for ANY other party, ever. Thus the Republicans gain a majority of ELECTORAL COLLEGE VOTES that have handed them the presidency multiple times in history, and at least three times in the last three decades despite being FAR behind the aggregate number of votes for the Democrats. If all votes among all the population of the country were tallied up, and divided among ALL parties that these votes went to, to have an accurate representation among both houses, both the major parties would ultimately have to LISTEN to their electorate much more closely than to the bribers... errr, sorry, campaign supporters among the big companies. Because NONE of the two parties would ever attain a 50% majority ever again. They'd have to make COMPROMISES. Something that hasn't been done in US politics in the last 200 years. Because it was never needed by POLITICIANS. Now throw in automatic voter registration by enforcing a cititzens registration (similar to your national security number) and place the voting date on a mandatory free day where EVERY employee gets one day off, plus quadruple the number of voting polls, THEN you might get an actual representation of the whole population. Eliminate the requirement to register yourself to one party or another (how that lack of secrecy of the vote has been kept alive is beyond me), and you'll get an even higher participation.

Found a Detail, that I find important as well: Up until now most Germans expect to find reliable news in ARD and ZDF. Private Broadcasters mostly try to adhere to these expectations as well. Every household has to pay for these and everybody has access to these news sources. The young people I talk to usually deny watching these channels but they also forget mentioning the App for "Tagesschau" or "heute" they have on their phones. I get the impression, American consumers live a lot more in their personal 'information bubble'. And oddly enough, all the Americans I know that left their country and learned another language never seem to get into that kind of bubble again, even when returning to the USA.

I just keep saying that we as a country - a nation - a people whose ancestors are immigrants - some of them voluntarily - and others forced - to come to the US - whatever - as much as we love our country - we have so much to get fixed. Unfortunately, sometimes it’s necessary to leave for a while - like the outside looking in - before we can see what needs to be corrected in our country.

The red arrow light is like the "Grüner Pfeil" adopted for germany from eastern germany: The traffic light shows red but You can turn right if the traffic allows it. BUT, you have to stop first and look! It's no you can drive if the traffic light shows red! It's like a Stop-Sign!

Prolife should be ranamed to profetus. As soon as fetus leaves the uterus those people couldn't care less about what happens to it. It's definitely not limited to United States, it works exactly the same where I'm from (which is Poland)

I (hopefully) think You can bake Your bread by yourself in the US... There may be markets which supply the ingredients for this... I use (to my shame this year only one time) a bread-baking-machine which is my second and which I own for years! It's such a good feeling to eat food, You made by yourself and it's tasty, too! You can vary the ingredients and test various tastes... I made respectively grow in the past tomatos, chilis (which I bought in a market), garden parsley, wild chive, and I own a smoker in which I smoked fillet of pork to ham (Lachsschinken in german), cheese (Gouda from the super market) and my own produced sausages ( very time and work consuming!)! There are so much possibilities to make your own tasty food, I think everythere on the world.... ;-)

Actually certain sources conside the USA being a plutocracy not a democracy anymore. The USA is dominated, ruled and run by the rich to a far larger extend than any other country in free western world. Running for an office, even for smaller ones, requires millions if not hundret of millions of dollars to have chance at all and eventually being successful. This is an open gate for lobbyists and leads straight into corruption.

Amen about corporations/politicians saying we dont have money for social programs. Tax the rich properly, tax giant corporations properly, and make marijuana/prostitution legal and then tax the hell out of it. Make pimps illegal. Put the power into womens hands when it comes to prostitution. When its illegal the girl doesnt want to go to jail. If its legal the girls arent afraid to call police. Also it isnt difficult to get guns illegally. An ex transported illegal guns into the US. He showed me online how easy it is to do and there are programs out there that blocks who you really are and where you really are. A VPN is a prime example. I watch TV shows from Switzerland and Germany here in the US. I load my VPN and say Im in Germany or Switzerland. When I lived in Germany and Switzerland I said I was in the US. However it doesnt mean there should be stricter regulations on firearms. All the school shootings I know of were from people who legally obtained the gun.

I don't like American style closets, tbh. Why? Because, unless you'd have a spacious sort of walk-in-closet, it doesn't offer me enough space for my textiles. I have a huge 2,70m (height) by 3,80m (frontal length) wardrobe in my bedroom which hardly fits all my clothes. No way a normal sized U.S. closet could do that job. Also, with a wardrobe you purchase and install on your own, your are much more free to make use of the space the room has to offer, such as placing the bed where you'd prefer it most, installing the wardrobe where it might make most sense, etc. In the U.S., placing the bed often is limited to only one wall (one wall might have the door, another the closet, a third perhaps the door to an en-suite), so you often end up having the bed pushed up against the window(s), sometimes even blocking the natural light from coming in the room. I find that horrible and also against all Feng-Shui. So, no thank you to these highly lauded, in my opinion wrongly so, build-in closets. Sorry.

Yes, Germany also has its many problems, but our baking culture is definitely something special and worth preserving.

I'm an American who happens to be nearly fluent in German. Not because the Goethe institute bestowed Level C2 on my, but because I lived in Germany for 10 months as a kid, then spent years (countless thousands of hours) studying on my own. Moreover, I've worked very hard to achieve a near flawless accent, to the point where most Austrians think I'm from German or Holland, and most Germans think I'm from Austria. If, God forbid, I spoke German with an ear-wrenching English accent, I would NEVER open my mouth in public speaking German. The 3 key components to learning a foreign language are: (1) Vocabulary (2) Grammar (3) Pronunciation On the flip side of the coin, there is nothing worse than someone speaking English with German accent ... except an Indian accent, which can induce a sudden urge to commit suicide. But I digress. It amazes me how few Germans realize how terrible their accent sounds when speaking English. For example, it has happened to me in so many conversations in Germany or Austria; whereby, when the German finds out I'm from America, he insists on suddenly switching to English to show off his "superior" English skills. Without exception, his English is ten times worse than my German, but somehow he thinks we need to switch to understand each other? Several years ago, I would acquiesce and allow him to speak English. But at some point I had enough of their bizarre behavior, and I just kept speaking German. If they persist in English, I point out to them that my German is FAR superior to their English and it's senseless for me to have to endure their horrendous German accent. Furthermore, if they want to speak English so bad, they can do what I did: completely uproot your entire life, find a job in and English-speaking country, and move there. Then they will have earned the right to destroy the English language. Another insanely annoying thing about Germans is that when they're in conversation with fellow Germans, in the middle of a German sentence, they find it necessary to interject an English word ... this is known as "eingedeutscht". They're so embarrassed of their own language, that they star tossing in foreign words. Could you imagine in two Englishmen were conversing in English (obviously), then started interjecting German words? C R I N G E !!! And the kicker is, the Germans think they sound smarter and cool when they do this, without realizing how ridiculous they sound when pronouncing the English word with a German accent. To those of us native English speakers who also speak German, this rubbish is enough to send us to the loony bin. Also, the Germans love to pick their nose in public - effing everywhere all the time - disgusting. And they stare to the point of creepiness - it's a freaking cult! P. S. Somebody needs to tell narrator of this video (Hayley Alexis) how inappropriate it is for women to swear like a drunken sailor - totally unladylike. The problem is, if a German girl is watching this, she'll naiively think that it's just fine for women in English to gratuitously use words like "arse whole", when nothing could be further from the truth. It's like a woman who gets a tattoo, which screams of a hookuh standing on the corner.
