How I Won My First DDR Tournament

I played in a DDR beginner bracket at my school and did a little gameing. I started practicing DDR about 2 weeks ago on a soft pad when I heard about this event. Before then, I had next to no DDR experience, but was able to clear a few 9s on Pump. About 20 minutes before it was run, they decided to split into beginner and advanced divisions, but I still thought I was going to get destroyed. It ...

    Very well made video so kudos on that, I'm sure these tips will help a lot of people! I think I'd disagree with the last point depending on what you're rolling for. If the unit you're rolling for would be a big spike, then it's going to be worth buying it even if you lose out on some interest gold (especially if you're rolling down just to 50), so you might as well roll down to 50 rather than 54. If it's just a trait-bot or something really unimportant then I'd agree you don't need to roll all the way down to your threshold, but then at that point you have to ask why you're rolling at all lol.

      appreciate the kind words! i definitely see your point, and i do agree that in cases where you get a big spike, rolling to 50 gold is probably better. thanks for watching btw :)

    Those were some decent tips but some more you could of added, been playing double up with friends that just either are super new or just not really good and i see them do a lot of small mistakes that probably a lot of beginners do, some of them u talked about in this video like rolling early / chasing unnecessary 3stars. Some others ive seen is chasing BIS only, they usually look at some tierlist or guide and see their bis and go for only that, getting bis every game is just not realistic especially if ur not on a losing streak, slamming items that might not be best but still good will often save a lot of hp and even help you get winning streaks easier, ive seen a lot of ppl either be super low or lose their streak just because they had 6 components laying around trying to chase bis. Dont level/roll right before creep rounds, you just lose eco for no reason unless youre really forced to spend to stay in the game. Try to balance combat and eco augments, usually having 3 combat or 3 eco augments isnt ideal, not always something you can do since you might just be super unlucky but if ur first 2 traits were eco augments, you should probably try to get a combat augment next. Do just a very little bit of scouting, you really dont have to analyse every single board and but you should always check a couple things, if ur playing duelist and see 3 other people that have either tristana or volibear, maybe try a different comp. Sometime ur stuck in ur comp due to ur augments, like extended duel, if ur getting contested either wait with ur rolling until the others are dead and if that wont happen you can just level and try to play a different carry like irelia instead of staying 7 and rolling all game. Scouting on augment rounds is also very important, if you get any hero augment like Midnight Siphon scout if anyone else got that augment, otherwise if 2 people just take the augment without scouting each other both will end up contesting each other. Dont choose your comp before the game starts, there has been so many games where my duo just said im going comp x, and tried to force it no matter what. That is not how you play the game, you might win some games where you end up just hitting or maybe ur playing a strong meta comp and no one is contesting but play what you hit, not what you decided before the game.

    • @fyzzl670
      @fyzzl670 Před 2 měsíci

      Oh for sure I agree! This is by no means a comprehensive list (I plan to make more when I have time in fact), but this was just to list (in my opinion) the ones that are both common and easy to fix. Things like scouting and greeding for bis does require further game knowledge, even if only a little bit. On the other hand, not rolling on stage 2 or not rolling down to exactly 50 gold is sort of just you know it or you don't. Because of that, it's also hard to find resources on those topics because no one would search for it (why search if you already know) and it probably feels too "obvious" for a dedicated resource which was part of my motivation in making this. The stuff you mentioned is definitely important too, and I've seen a lot of friends make them too, so I appreciate the feedback. Also, thank you for watching! Especially since it sounds like you really had no reason to LOL

    • @another7674
      @another7674 Před 2 měsíci

      I notice generally the top challenger flex players let their items dictate most of their decisions (what comp to play, whether to play for winstreak or losestreak, what augments and units to pick up). The game is heavily weighted on your items. You have a very limited selection of items compared to amount of units you see.

    • @fyzzl670
      @fyzzl670 Před 2 měsíci

      @@another7674 yup I'd agree. The components you get more or less determine what comps you can effectively play. This is probably a weird analogy, but it almost reminds me of mahjong (even though I hate mahjong and love TFT LOOOL). Your starting hand in mahjong already tells you what sets you are able to form, so trying to "force" a certain hand or comp will be less effective just by the nature of the odds. I have no idea if this analogy makes any sense to anyone that isn't me tho lmfao

      @@fyzzl670 I get that the video isnt supposed to be every single thing ever, just wanted to leave a comment for ppl that might be looking for some more tipps. Also i might not need the guide myself but theres always the chance that you mention things that i didnt know yet especially since i really dont play a lot and the last/only time where i actually played ranked to actually rank up was back it set 6 so there probably some things that got changed that i might not know yet, and i just like to watch random videos that i get recommeded.

    Tip Clarifications: #1: The point here isn't to "never spend any gold on stage 2." You obviously still need to buy units, but spending gold on rolls is extremely low-value because you don't have much direction yet. Let your free shops give you direction on what to play. #2: For some comps (including Senna reroll!), level 7 is not very impactful, but level 8 is. The question there is whether you're strong enough to make it to level 8 safely, since it is pretty expensive. #3: The specific wording of "CHASING" 3-stars is important here. If you happen to see many copies of Kindred for example as you are still searching for Yone 3, there's nothing wrong with holding them just in case you continue to get lucky (provided you have enough gold to do so). However, if you already have Yone 3, there is no reason to continue dumping gold to find Kindred 3, since Yone is significantly more powerful in the comp, and reaching those higher levels will yield greater board strength. #5: I only talk about rolling to/above 50 here, but the concept still applies if you choose to roll to lower thresholds such as 30 or 40, especially since you won't make back a full threshold without a streak bonus (e.g. 40 gold + 5 passive gold + 4 interest + 0 streak = 49 gold). General Clarifications: 1) All boards shown are just meant to be examples. They are by no means meant to show optimal positioning or items (although I did my best wrt items). Don't try to greed for the exact items I show, since there are lots of other options that will still work just fine. 2) The examples were written during patch 14.7, which had a very different meta than 14.8. I can't make any guarantees that the specific boards will remain particularly powerful (although the relative power differences of the options I discussed should still be similar). 3) I'm sorry about the inconsistent audio. I had a bit of a stuffy nose during one of my recording sessions and it was a lot more obvious than I thought it would be LOL

    I started playing in the very beginning, but didn’t stick around. I learned the basics of the underlying mechanics going on, but that’s it. Came back for a super short stint a while ago, didn’t learn the game really, just played one specific reroll comp and got bored. Now I’m picking it up but for real this time, and yeah, true beginner resources are so scarce. Everyone seems to give such meta specific advice, I really just want the basic fundamentals. Hey, I'm super old and slow as far as LoL players go... Was a plat back in 2012 or so but dropped off and havent played much at all since 2013 or 2014.... Absolutely insane how much things have changed with champ redesigns and stuff. This seems like a great compromise to get my League fix in again! Sadly life has gotten in the way and I cant commit the time needed to play even normals in LoL. Thanks for the video, maybe I'll run into you in game some day :).

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THE RELEASE OF SET 10: Some of the specific numbers I've given in this video ARE subject to change in future sets. For example, it was confirmed today that the level cap would be raised from 9 to 10, and that they would be adjusting shop odds accordingly. While we don't yet know how exactly the shop odds will be changed, this also has the potential to affect what level is optimal for reroll comps. Mortdog also mentioned the possibility of adjusting the Champion Pool for each cost in the future, with the 4 cost pool being adjusted from 12 copies to 11. Legends will also NOT be returning in Set 10, and portals will remain, but we won't be seeing portals as disruptive as The Sump or House Lightshield. Furthermore, they've replaced 2 items, RFC and Night Harvester, with Red Buff and Steadfast Heart respectively. Some existing items also received balance changes. They've also added the new core set 10 mechanic called Headliners. A Headliner is a unit that is bought for 3 times the standard cost but is immediately a 2-star unit, and gets a "Headliner buff" (most champs just get extra AD or HP or AP, some have more interesting effects). Headliners will also contribute an extra +1 for one of their traits. Despite these adjustments, almost all of the underlying concepts presented in this video should still apply to future sets. Managing your Item Economy, timing your power spikes, etc. will always be important skills in TFT, but the specific numbers may require adjustments in how it is executed. I'm not sure yet if I will be creating an updated video for Set 10, since it would be very time consuming to replace all of the clips and visuals, even with only minor adjustments to the actual content. My intention in creating this guide in the first place was to give people a primer on the fundamentals of TFT while mentioning as little set-specific information as possible (although examples are sometimes needed, of course). Personally, I feel like I've done at least a decent job at this, and redoing the most time-consuming part of the process just to present the same information as before seems a bit exhausting tbh. Regardless, thanks for watching the video and reading this wall of text! EDIT (November 14, 2023): There have been a lot of changes to the PBE almost every day until now, but ALL of the unit pool sizes have now changed (sizes are now 22/20/17/10/9 for 1/2/3/4/5 cost units). The set 10 mechanic, Headliners, also received a HUGE change this morning where a headliner will only appear if at least half of the unit's pool is still available. Follow me! I just started playing this today and I have no idea what I'm doing. Every hero seems the same to me as I don't know what each one is good for and what kind of team they fit into. Plus, I don't know who I should be buying and if I should just be focusing on trying to get heroes with similar traits. It's confusing and I end up just having a bunch of pretty much useless heroes and my team is garbage even though I do try to get heroes of the same traits. That kind of stuff is what I'm trying to learn about. I get the basic stuff, but trying to build my team and what heroes do what is what's stumping me.

      For things like that, one shortcut is to use the stats website I mention at the end tactics.tools/ which lists out common comps that place well in Diamond+ lobbies. They'll also recommend items for certain units, so you can discern who your main tanks and carries are for each comp. Robinsongz's TFT handbook (www.tfthandbook.com/) also has a list of comps, although it is manually curated and updated, so it isn't always up-to-date (right now he is busy preparing for/playing in NA regionals). Perhaps the more "proper" way to go about it is to just read each champion's abilities and all of the traits (very boring and not always straightforward tbh). From there you can determine what champions might like certain kinds of items (for example: Xayah probably doesn't need Infinity Edge, which allows abilities to crit, because her trait, Vanquishers, already does this for her). This may not lead to optimal items, but it is a good skill to practice as well. With regards to traits, it's hard to make a blanket statement, but IN GENERAL the idea is to have 1 main offensive trait to play around (Vanquishers, Gunners, Sorcerers, etc.) and then fill in extra spots with units that share other traits. In the case of Sorcerers, Taric is a Sorcerer that also possesses the traits Targon and Bastion. Bastion is a defensive trait that provides units with Armor and MR, so we can add Shen, who has Ionia/Bastion/Invoker traits. If we are able to find another Invoker such as Soraka (Targon/Invoker) or Karma (Ionia/Invoker), we can also provide our Sorcerers with more MP over time to cast more often. How "worth it" each trait (or even each break point) is will depend on the meta and balance of the traits. Personally, I would recommend a mixture of looking at stats and reading things thoroughly. Maybe pick 1-3 comps to try out, and read the abilities of all of the unit's and their traits as you buy them so you can better understand WHY the stats favor certain items or unit pairings, or why a certain comp could benefit from activating certain traits. It can be hard for a beginner to tell how much value something actually provides, so using stats to figure out what's actually good is a good starting point so you can begin to analyze on your own what specifically makes it good. I know this is a really long response, but I hope it was helpful. Let me know if you have more questions as well! Always happy to talk and discuss.

      Sorry, another thing I forgot to mention: when you're in this stage of learning the game, I think it's SUPER important to actually pay attention and watch what is happening during your fights. This lets you understand where damage is coming from, where CC is coming from, or generally just "what units do what" as you were saying. Might seem a little obvious, but I feel like TFT is a game where it can be easy to zone out since it is way more chill of a game, so I figured it was worth mentioning just in case.

      @@fyzzl670 Yeah I have been watching, but all I been seeing is my random ass teams getting their butts kicked lol. But I actually appreciate the super long comments cause that means you took the time and put in the effort to try and teach me and help me understand what I need to do. So thank you for that. So it looks like I need to go and do some research on the heroes and team comps if I wanna have any chance at improving.

      Yeah, no problem! Also, yeah TFT is just a game that is going to involve a lot of reading to learn by nature of the game. It should be fairly manageable though if you just stick to a few comps at first to get a feel for everything and give you grounds to apply the more abstract concepts. Good luck!
