Fish and Ships! John G Munson Sails In, From Great Lakes Aquarium
A rather unusual perspective to film from for an arrival, but a popular one for tourists who visit! John G Munson arriving, viewed from inside the Great Lakes Aquarium. I had driven a school group on a field trip to the Aquarium, and the bus drivers can tag along for free if desired! While there, the Munson arrived, so took full advantage of the opportunity. Unfortunately the two viewing balconies specifically in place for this purpose were closed during this visit due to the construction below (building the new cruise ship dock/seawall), so had to settle for a window view, which sort of dampened the salute a bit, but made for a pretty unique experience. This was the second ship I’ve watched from the aquarium, the first was in 2021, long before I started filming for this purpose (although I believe I do have a video from that)
One of the centerpieces of Canal Park and often seen in the background from the Canal as ships come and go, The Great Lakes Aquarium opened in 2000 as the largest all freshwater aquarium in the world, although a small ocean exhibit area has opened since. It is a large, two story building housing a large variety of fish and many other animals from around the world, centered around a large two story tall central tank housing local fish. It also has a sturgeon touch pool, educational facilities and much more. It’s also the second most popular viewing location for Canal traffic after the piers, with the building specifically designed to allow visitors the best view possible of the harbor. It is especially popular among families with younger kids that might find the salutes too loud on the piers, along with an environment with more for them to do while waiting for the ship to arrive.
As the Munson, she arrived with holds full of limestone and a double salute, showing off her stuff as usual! For this particular arrival she had just returned from a month long break out of service in Toledo following some minor damage taken when she hit a pier a little too hard while docking in late June, so it was really good to see her. She sailed to the Greymont dock, straight down the harbor on the Superior Front Bay so was able to see her for quite awhile! The perspective from this location as she makes the turn after the Canal really highlights just how long and low in the water this ship is when she’s loaded, something that’s difficult to get a sense of when you’re standing closer.
Hope everyone enjoys!

    • @jonathanellsworth21
      @jonathanellsworth21 Před 2 dny

      Glad you enjoyed!! The maximum size ship that fits inside the locks in and out of the Lakes is 740ft x 80ft, very outdated dimensions. The length is decent for modern ships but the width is brutal, most vessels that long now days are a lot wider, both for stability and capacity purposes. Typically 100-120ft for a 700 footer. So when salties (and Canadian Lakers) are specifically built to traverse those locks, they’re constructed right up to the maximum width within inches, tight enough that for some vessels if you attached a couple of car mirrors on either side, they wouldn’t fit. Needless to say that leads to a lot of scraping, no matter how skilled your pilot is. The Wagenborg vessels are a lot slimmer by comparison, this particular vessel is 56ft wide. That gives them over 20ft of extra clearance vs other salties, a lot more room for error. What scrapes they do get are smaller and more easily fixed as well. It impacts their capacity a lot, but it allows them access to almost any port on Earth, and they look good doing it.
