To Life! To Deli! - Chicagoland Jewish Delis
More than a place to get a meal, the Jewish deli is a community forged in food. “'I’ll Have What She’s Having': The Jewish Deli" explores how Jewish immigrants, mostly from Central and Eastern Europe, imported and adapted traditions to create a uniquely American restaurant. The exhibition reveals how Jewish delicatessens became a cornerstone of American food culture, and how delis served as a lifeline for many Holocaust Survivors and refugees who came to the United States, including in the Chicago area.
“'I’ll Have What She’s Having': The Jewish Deli" was at Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center October 22, 2023 - April 14, 2024. The exhibition was organized and circulated by the Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles, California.

When Hate Becomes a Crime

Hate crimes in the U.S. increased overall by 7% from 2021 to 2022. In the last three months of 2023 there was a 360% increase in antisemitic incidents. Every time one of these crimes is committed it creates tension and fear, and tears at the fabric of community life, which raises several questions: what qualifies as a hate crime? Similarly, why do hate crimes often go underreported? And ultimat...

Manny's is the best Jewish Deli in the USA, hands down. I worked in the loop my entire career. We had a bunch of Jewish Delis back inthe day. Over time they disappeared and it was so sad to see. The Dill Pickle was just down the street from where I worked. i ate there once a week minimum. Manny's though, nothing comes close. The guy who makes the corned beef and pastrami sans has been there forever. He's got a personality as big as the Sears Tower and is funnier than heck. He makes one heck of a san too. I haven't been to the city in forever. When our kids were young we used to go to Manny's on Saturdays and they fell in love with the food and charm of the old place. I'm not Jewish, but I worked with many wonderful Jewish people. They taught me a ton about their culture and food. Just a few weeks ago I talked to an old Jewish buddy of mine. We worked together for decades. We always treated each other like family, and that was the case with so many of Jewish friends. This was really a treat to watch, as it brought back so many fond memories. Thank you for making and sharing this gem. I still remember when Kenny at Manny's had a full head of hair. :)...Hey wait, so did I back then. Cheers

That mother that suffocated her baby was courageous even if in the end they were all found and killed. She knew that if her baby’s cries caught the soldiers’ attention everyone with her would have been killed. She sacrificed her baby probably not so much for herself, but for the others. I don’t know if I would ever have that kind of strength.

The Jewish food scene in Chicago is not what it was, especially with regard to kosher food. My grandmother lived in Chicago and we made trips there a couple times a year in the early 1960's. I was too young to know the names of the places where we got food but I remember the food. On a fairly recent trip to Chicago I was very disappointed. Some food didn't match my memories and other food I couldn't even find. 1) I was looking for the delicate Great Lakes smoked chubs. I was told pollution killed off the fish. 2) There was a certain greek olive sold by Jewish places I loved. It was not the regular canned black olive nor the kalamata. No one knew what I was talking about. 3) I wanted a cookie we called eier kichel but no one had it. 4) I wanted plain mandelbroit, not with chocolate or other things. No one had plain. 5) There were the wonderful onion rolls. They were common. Now they have mostly disappeared and what I found was not good. 6) My father used to say that the best Jewish rye bread, better than New York, came from Chicago. This was a huge disappointment. It was not the same as it used to be.

If he’s slyly suggesting that today’s Islamic terrorists are no worse than the anti-Nazi partisans of WWII then he can take a hike. I also don’t like his casual and conversational tone.

P.S. The whole "Hatred, Racist, DEI" mantra is an emotional thwart. What you guys NEVER seem to want to address is the what, who, and whys. While you had Mengele in Western Europe, in the East, you had Hirohito. Both doing medical experiments of the worst kind on people. this wasn't a Jewish factor. That's so over. It was the Eastern part of world. The Eurasians. Japan married into the Hapsburgs. AUSTRIA. The original home base for all the Natzi movements, including Transhumanism. They have been trying to merge science and the occult for centuries. Never considering the ramifications by a higher power. All those dancing rituals in front of CERN, all those mojo spells put into music, all the torture used on people to measure their ability to cope and then experiment with their splitting, is all in err. Not ONE of you. In ANY University, ever did anything to stop the use of children through CPS, in all these medical experiments. Not one. Now, all of these Universities are going bye bye. Removing God from the institutions has created monsters.

My son just went here, at first he was like I don't want to go to school today because we have to go to some Holocaust museum.(Some Holocaust museum.) Just his tone shook me. I met a survivor back in the 80s while I was in high school. We were not told what the assembly was for just that it was mandatory. We were introduced to her as Mrs Shapiro, such a lovely woman. She told us over the next 3 hours, her story and let me tell you, she was and will always be the most powerful person I have ever met. She told us about her life before, during, and after the occupation by Nazis. The changes she went through, the hate and pain of physical abuse, and the suffering of losses of her whole family and friends she watched die. For my son who does not have a prejudice in his body to balk at going to this place of reverence, for the way he said the bus would be so uncomfortable. I teared up and told him that he had to go and to think about the discomfort of the ones who were treated like cattle and forced into cages. Medical torture, work, sickness. " Your discomfort is insignificant to those who were forced. Then I told him to remember them and understand. I was so mad, hurt, shocked, saddened by how he responded at first but now he knows, he came home and was in tears then he told me he understood my reaction. All our youth need to make this small trek so they can know who they need to remember and fight, believe me it will teach them.
