HO Scale Abandoned Blair Line Depot w/Graffiti
Thanks for checking out this video. As a modern modeler, I see graffiti and run-down buildings everywhere. I wanted to stretch my skills, so I took my own advice to #justjumpin and created a building with graffiti. I also wanted the depot not to look like the depot model from Blair Line LLC. Finally, I wanted to make sure I added some detail, which I have not done on my previous kit builds.
While I have now built several Craftsman kits, and this is the third Blair Line kit, it was really fun to depart from the directions and make an effort not to have the model look like the picture on the box.
I want to shout out to the @NMRAORGModelRailroading for helping me and challenging me to be a better modeler. The help friendships are the best thing about joining! Check out nmra.org for more information and to learn about the hobby of model railroading.

    Dan, I remember seeing you discuss this build on New Tracks and was impressed. But man, seeing it come together here is like seeing it for the first time. I like watching not only your thought process as you constructed it but also the problem solving that has to go along with almost every structure we build. I really like how your graffiti came out and I can't believe you found a 50% off Michael's coupon. And I think you finally convinced me that I need to put a static grass applicator on my wish list.

      Thanks for the comments. My specialty seems advising what not to do. We’ll call it my niche. I haven’t seen 40% off in about a year. Mostly but get one 50% off or 20-30 off. Also most of their discounts have been split to in store only and online only discounts with heavier discounts online.

    Missed the live show this eve so catching up on it. One suggestion I would have, especially for livestreams being viewed later, with multiple subjects is to timestamp the various different discussions/items (ie cement plant, s/w, etc) and embed into the description. Makes things easier for folks (like me) to find what interests me, ie CAD anything doesn't, but the cement plant section did. Just a thought, realize more time/effort required on your end. Thanks!

    How do you like that magnetic gluing jig? I’m a complete newbie and I just got one. It looks like it would be really handy.

    • @DMRJ
      @DMRJ Před měsícem

      I like it. It takes a little getting used to, and finding out your comfort level with it. The larger the item is the more tricks to keep things angled straight. I often use my 1-2-3 blocks with it for HO scale items. Also, if you have a heavy hand the magnets can move with a slight force. Finally, this may not apply to you because you already have one, but for my budget, it’s a little expensive. All that being said, I think it’s a worthwhile tool to have for squaring up glue seams.

    • @Linda_Eskin
      @Linda_Eskin Před měsícem

      @@DMRJ Thanks for all the info and tips. I will mostly be doing N scale, so fairly tiny. I was looking for 1-2-3 blocks when I came across this, and it seemed more versatile. I also got a set of machinist squares, which could help with taller models. I had best play with it a little bit, at least making a couple of very simple things, just for practice. @DMRJ I will try using Atlas code 83. I will probably get the benchwork done locally with one or two drawers. I have some restrictions since it is in a garage. I will put on casters. I have been trying to get one started for years. I have had the 3 fold curse over the decades: money, time, and space. This is the best solution combining two switching layouts.

    I have found if you are going to paint craftsman kits, that is, where the main components are laser-cut wood, paint BOTH sides - even if the inside is painted a matte black. It is having one side painted, and one side raw wood that make them prone to warping.

    • @DMRJ

      @@kenr86 I agree and that was a hard lesson with the side wall of this kit. It was so thin and got so soft. That advice was given during the group build and I did no heed it. Not sure where the layout edge is @ 0:18, only thing I would suggest is to possibly lengthen the track lead on the right side and perhaps shorten the run around tracks. Since the trains are coming from the left and all the points are trailing points, in order to switch those 3 tracks and drop off cars at designated tracks a decent sized lead is necessary to pull the train beyond the switches and then back up. You don't seem to have that ability here.
