Holley Retrobright disappointment

Picked up some retrobrights for my uncle's old Toyota. I was very excited about these, but when I got them I was immediately smacked in the face with how cheap the lenses feel. Thin plastic. These things are over 200 a pop. For the housing itself you're talking $130 for a new one from Holley. I'd said in the video I didn't see if they were selling these. I found em now so updating that here. Th...

You can get a whole replacement but usually they're pretty easy to clean up so save yourself a bit of money and tidy em up. At the time of this video you can get a gallon of Evapo-Rust for app $25-30 that's half of what replacing all four switches would cost...

Kinda bummed that the corner lights were drilled to let moisture out. Which drilling there is not the right way to do it anyway. It may seem like it, but it's not. Anyway. Maybe some UV cure resin and dye can help hide that a little bit. I think I will need to to pull the lights apart entirely though to really clean them up. At least I got a fairly decent corner light. these engines always have some sort of tick, it's because the cam isn't ground properly from factory
Nice truck overall that are hard to find. Love the old '86-88 xtracab long beds. I read somewhere a long time ago that there were only 2000 long bed xtracabs produced in 86, 87 and 88. Not sure if that info is correct but it might be because I rarely if ever saw them. I have a red 1988 5-speed xtracab longbed with 165K miles that I bought from the original owner in Sherman Oaks, Ca back in 1996 to replace my previous truck (which was also an '88 longbed but a standard cab) that got stolen a few months prior. There is a rear shelf behind the back seat that runs across which was also missing in mine and I remember asking the original owner about that shelf before purchasing the truck but she didn't know what happened to it. At that time the truck only had 56K miles and it was clean and I didn't care about a missing rear shelf. I eventually found one on ebay several years ago which I haven't installed yet and is still in the box lol. Haven't driven my truck in over 10 years and after 28 years of owning it might be time to let it go. Not sure yet. Also found a rare perfect condition original factory chrome rear bumper with the black plastic end caps that are next to impossible to find undamaged which I still haven't put on the truck because of something happening to those end caps. The truck owner switched to some aftermarket tubular style rear bumper and I jumped all over that original rear bumper for $100 and didn't wait on that.
Thanks, it definitely needs some work but I'm giving it a solid go. I was reading those numbers about the production on this particular variant as well. Seems fairly scarce. I'm looking for a rear shelf myself, or I may end up making one, depending on what sort of configuration I decide I want to go with for it. My rear bumper is twisted but hopefully I can straighten that out myself as well. I'd say it's not time to let that truck go though. They definitely don't make em like this anymore. I'm currently working on the head gasket as that's blown, fortunately not bad enough to have gotten coolant in the oil. It was just pressurizing the cooling system itself, and then it would turn the overflow bottle into a geyser. Hopefully I don't find anything else wrong while I dig into that. I am finding some of the studs for the exhaust have been replaced and not necessarily with the right size studs so whoever my Uncle had working on this definitely had a "get it done" mentality and not necessarily a "Do it right" one. Main thing I'm wanting to do beyond that is try to find the components to install an AC system into it. It's one thing to drive around San Jose, it's another to be dead smack in the middle of Texas. Maybe I'll at least try to find a split rear window so there's a little more ventilation when driving, who knows. Either way, thanks for the comment and I do hope your truck gets some attention soon =D
@@jonnymiskatonic -I forgot to mention putting in a makeshift rear shelf in '97 is also what I did. Bought a 3/4" thick board at Home Depot and had it cut to the correct length and it works fine. I glued down a dark gray mat over it (similar to front door mat material) and had it trimmed to fit. It's in the truck all these later which is also the reason I never installed the original shelf I eventually found on ebay. My truck has the sliding rear window which is good to have when it's 100 degrees. If you're able to find one I would eventually have that switched out. I've been to Texas a couple of times (cousin in Arlington) and it gets brutally hot there. I used the sliding rear window even though my truck has factory AC and it used to be ice cold but developed a leak and the freon eventually leaked out. Might have an AC shop completely go thru it. I tried to start the truck but it has a dead battery from sitting and should have disconnected it first. The rear differential has a leak and the carburetor most likely needs rebuilt from sitting for a decade. Unless I spray some carb cleaner and get lucky. Wish it had fuel injection instead. It's been in non-op status for 10 years and will need to be smog'd and registered which is another $200-250. Probably $1500 for all costs and repairs. If I did that and also had the truck washed and detailed it would make a huge difference. I love the old Toyota trucks, visually the truck lines were great there was a great simplicity to them. The '84-88 trucks were the pinnacle years for Toyota. Maintenance was a breeze, oil and plug changes were done in an hour and the cost was less than $20. Those days unfortunately are over..... Is your truck currently driveable or is the head gasket too far gone? I was lucky and never had to deal with that. Some people are still able to drive their car if the head gasket issue is minor. Overall your trucks looks pretty good, mostly just minor cosmetic stuff. That is definitely a factory rear bumper on your truck. I'll probably hang on to my Toyota truck for a while. If I sell it I'll most likely regret it and I've had plenty of regrets. Used to also have a clean '69 Dodge Charger R/T 440 with a factory 4-speed that I took to car shows. Like a fool I sold it also back in '97. By far one of the biggest mistakes I ever made.
Rn, it’s now Stephenson 2-18.

00:41 A pink star?
Just a abstract based on the Iconic V838 shot where it can appear pinkish due to the color of the surrounding gas. But no, unfortunately no truly pink stars out there.
On my 1972 B there is a nut which needs to be loosened in the wheel well which holds the bottom of the chrome ring on. You may be able to pry it off without loosening that nut, but you’ll never get it back on.
Uhhh. Not sure if you watched the video but I just did both without doing that. Good to know but yeah.
Merely adding additional information based upon what I discovered. It is entirely possible yours were either previously removed or that’s model/year didn’t have them. No need to be a dick about it.

Drilled holes in headlights/tail lights are very frustrating
Yes, yes they are. I get it that sealing them is a big pain in the ass. But even if your goal is to get the moisture out, it's not even the right place to do so. The ones I've seen in stock lights are at the top and on the back side that way the vapor rises and can vent out the little tube at the top. Just putting a hole at the bottom only helps the first time and really just hastens the decay of the reflector material.
Thank you for the part number and the how to video to get it installed
If I find my GoPro I'll try to take another video but the space is tight and lighting is definitely needed for video. I'm almost considering if I ever have to redo it to weld a tube in place and do some press fit sealed ball bearings
Bro it will be a great project / build ❤

Who knows at this point. Sold that truck 5 years ago. Could be but seems like a hell of a design flaw to have to take the plenum out to change the plugs.
Two roof replacements, ouch. Where is this?
Round Rock Texas
Why were only some panels damaged? I would have thought all of them would have sustained some damage.
Physics
Some variation in glass strength across the panels and hail size/speed. Just a guess.
More so the variable of the hail itself. The glass drill have dome minute variance, but the hail itself was anywhere from the size of a dime to the size of a tennis ball.
@@jonnymiskatonic my guess is that its just random and that once the integrity of one of them is breached then additional damage accumulates much easier for that given panel, while the neighboring ones might still be fortified.

insurance?
They'll just total the vehicles for a quarter of their value.
Yep, now I know the culprit of why there is oil in the center spark plug wells. We have an 1989 Honda Civic Hatchback DX 1.5 with a 5-speed. This has been the cause of engine pulsating, mainly when engine is not fully warmed-up. Not looking forward to doing the fix, but better than paying someone else to fix it, and on their terms and timetable. At age 68, I'm getting more back tired when spending time under the hood. Here I go again, again.

Magnetic sparkplug socket!!!
Very nice. I'm running with the moss Mikuni setup at the moment. I think it's very similar but uses the Mikuni TM36-68 carbs instead. Starts and runs well and hoping to get it onto a rolling road soon. How is yours driving compared to the old carb setup ?
So the thing is before I got it someone did a single downdraft Weber setup. Which was horrible. So I've never driven it with the original SU setup.
I spent 8 hours changing the spark plugs and cables, what a hard job in that truck, a work of 20 minutes in other brands.
Whoever designed this is an absolute sadist that's for sure. Maddening isn't it.
@@jonnymiskatonic do they make any aftermarket headers or intake manifolds I’m trying to build my truck but there’s nothing upgrades
Also how did you get past the coolant line in cylinder 3?
At this point I can't even remember. Sold that truck a few years back. I don't think I had to mess with them
how did you get the original spark plug boots off on 3&4 did you have to use needle nose? Or did you just pull by the wire since you were replacing the wires?
If you check around the 6:37 mark you can see that my slighter size was to my advantage. While I have little memory of the event itself it looks like I was able to just reach in there and pop it free. I wear Medium glove at best so that was to my advantage I'm sure. Someone with larger hands would likely not have been able to do that. Do you have a kid available to lend a hand? 😁
