An Interview with Jonathan Latham part 2
The Poison Papers @ www.poisonpapers.org/
Dr. Jonathan Latham talks about his development and experiences in the sciences and the development of the sciences in general . he adds how people perceive science and how decisions are made to do certain things in the sciences such as epigenetics
he expands upon in part 2 on the horrific role the EPA has played in general and as revealed in the Poison Papers . he touches upon such studies and the contemporary and historical structures inherent within societal institutions as well as a few of the overall guiding theories which seem to be consistent with what is the perceived power structure . the EPA as evidenced in the Poison Papers, has been allowing large capitalists to use many toxins in the ecosystem . toxic substances such as atrazine, BPA and dioxins have been approved by the EPA, through the basing of such decisions to approve them, on a whole slew of methods, inclusive of: a use of a system of technicalities, ignorance of many peer reviewed research studies in independent laboratories and industry sponsored studies in certified commercial laboratories
he mentions these and other subjects with Dr. Melisa Yee in part 1 of an interview on the program Seeds of Truth on ‘Ōlelo Community Media . the interview was videoed on Moku o ‘O‘ahu at the Kaimuki Media Center in ‘Aukake of 2018

I've been transcribing part of this talk for an article I'm writing. Here's what I've done so far: "A lot of people look down on us as mahi'ai, as farmers. 'He's only a farmer.' They fail to realize that to be a good mahi'ai yeah, you have to know the universe of a mahi'ai, which means I have to be a water scientist. I have to be a soil scientist. I have to be a weatherman to be able sense the wind, the rain. The whole environment is my universe. So when people look at a mahi'ai or a farmer or a hula dancer and say "She's just a humu hula," or "he's just a farmer", they don't realize the extent of knowledge. Kupuna ike, the knowledge of our ancestors, is the science. The big difference with science today and a science of yesterday is: (1) science of yesterday, we're not limited by money; (2) we're not limited by time. It takes us three generations to verify that that variety can grow in the cold waters or the hot water. That's what it will take. Today's science, they focus all way down to the atom, to the element. But because they're restricted by funding and time, the focus is too narrow. They don't know the consequences of what is outside of this lo'i [taro patch]. They don't know that five years from now, that taro they bred will be invasive and take over the lo'i and choke all the rest of the taro. The science today, we as practitioners need to malama [take care], to have them sit down with us and tell us, what is their intention. What are they trying to do when they hybridize a certain variety of taro? The quest for the super taro, the taro that will grow in every environment, in every situation, is a myth. The varieties we have that our ancestors passed us, down to us, is extreme. When I say extreme, kalo paua, the only one that can grow in the desert of Ka'u." Mahalo, Uncle Jerry! 🙏

I'm not sure I will ever forget being deceived by Vandana Shiva. It was in the late 1990s and I was watching a panel discussion on CSPAN. Shiva was one of the participants and she was blaming Monsanto GMO cotton for a huge number of suicides committed by Indian farmersbecause of the economic losses when their crops failed. The number of suicides, per year, was something like 100,000. I was, of course, very upset about that. But later I found out that she was simply lying. Until around 2004, the only GMO cotton being grown in India was in test plots. It was not legal to grow it otherwise. The farmers were under contract to the company Mahayco, a Monsanto subsidiary. They were to grow the GMO cotton to see how well or badly it performed in a number of growing conditions. After the growing season, the cotton would not be sold. It was destroyed. The farmers were paid for their time, not for their harvest. They were paid the same amount regardless of the yield or of the quality, and all their inputs were provided, seeds, fertilizers, etc. They stood no risk at all from a bad harvest. There is no way anyone could honestly attribute a suicide to the economic loss of a bad harvest in such a case. Later I learned somewhat more. There were at the time about 7 million Indian farmers growing cotton (all non-GMO) but India, with more than a billion people, was mostly farmers. Clearly almost all of those farmers were growing something else, rice, wheat, beans, whatever. The number of farmer suicides, which was an honest number, was for all farmers, not cotton farmers. She had to have known that when she presented it as suicides due to failure of a cotton crop. I suppose more than twenty years later, I should not still remember that deception with such anger.

And she still plays that lie and ignores the fact that Indian farmers LOVE GM cotton. They love it so much that after a few years it was grown on 20 million acres and maintains a 90% adoption rate. Shiva the Charlatan.

“A potato is a potato” is an example of how English and other western languages have dumbed down our understanding of the world by blind labelling. Unlike noun based languages, Other languages are context sensitive. Indigenous languages don’t do that, they give specificity, context and relationship. “You open yourself to listen. . .” That is what we are missing, what we need to do to learn our place and survive.
