Just how essential is Arizona agriculture? According to Vice President for Agriculture, Life and Veterinary Sciences and Cooperative Extension at the University of Arizona Shane Burgess, if Arizona were to be locked down and no food could be imported into the state, Arizona agriculture could feed the entire state for a time. This is a testament to the state’s agricultural prowess and why Burges...

Hello what do you guys spray on alfalfa?
𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘮
She mentioned the importance of forests. It's a Catch-22. If the farmers have limited supplies of water, they will want to irrigate cash crops to pay bills. Increasing forest cover requires long term investment planning. Draining the aquifers for alfalfa, nuts, etc. will degrade the environment if unchecked.
Don't build farms in the desert and then expect a bailout when things go dry. Move the farm to where it rains.
So glad you commented. Gives me a chance to share Arizona agriculture's amazing story. First, Arizona has been growing amazing crops and raising amazing livestock for probably 2,000 years thanks to the Hohokam people that came before us. This American Indian tribe built the state's first canal system. More recent people groups (the last 2 centuries) built new canal systems following the same canal arteries from their system. Out west because of managed, targeted irrigation we can produce 2, 3 and 4 times as much as midwest farms on the same amount of land. And, while ag continues to shrink in Arizona due to development we're still producing more than ever before using fewer resources and much less land. No one produces like California and Arizona in the fruits and vegetable space. If you don't have agriculture out west you won't eat as well and abundantly as you do now. If we move farms only where it rains, you'll be starving, my friend. Even in the most abundant rainfall regions of the country, they experience periods of drought. Depending exclusively on rainfall is folly. I could go on but this is the big stuff.
@@arizonafarmbureau6771 I'm with you..I get it. But the aquifers are drying up and arid regions are dryer. I predict huge migrations of humans in the future due to weather changes. We need to rethink all of our food infrastructures. I shouldn't be able to buy "Avocadoes from Mexico! " in my local stores all year round.
@@4409rjf Fair enough. But, while I do believe climate change is a factor I also believe we will cycle out of this drought. I am an optimist. Some of the technology strategies we are coming up with can mitigate some of our current water flow challenges in different regions of the country. Challenge drives innovation. Like you, I'll take a California Avacado any day over the other option. Stay safe and well my friend, and hopeful for the future.
