I am so, so happy to hear more of your original music is being recorded! I'm currently listening to De Profundis on Friday Night is Music night; it's gorgeous. I'm so grateful for composers such as your good self who have that sixth sense for melody and aren't afraid to knock out a thumping good tune. Long time admirer of your work - thank you! :)
Perfect film, perfect music .
Cant wait to hear the bass clarinet concerto
Beautiful interpretation Rod. Thank you
Some of the thumb twiddling and bored postures of the non-playing members of the orchestra is wonderful to behold. Quite unprofessional of course
Beautiful singing and musical arrangement! 🎶🎹🎤🥁🎺
Could not the account of the film have been accurate. Alistair Sim was the leading star and the racehorse an unknown hence the racing odds. Timothy West this is below standard.
What a rude interviewer
A great inspirational conducted who believed in every note he performed.
See ya Flash!
Wonderful conductor and wonderful musician. I heard him often and miss him to this day.
This is a gem
I would have loved if he had been interviewed by an intelligent person who knew what they were talking about. What a wasted opportunity.
"Maidens of St Trinians Gird your armour on! Grab the nearest weapon Never mind which one! The battle's to the strongest Might is always right Trample on the weakest Glory in their flight! St Trinians! St Trinians! Our battle cry! St Trinians! St Trinians! Will never die! Strive towards your fortune Boldly on your way! Never once forgetting There's one born every day! Let our motto be broadcast "Get your blow in first!" She who draws her sword last Will always come off worse!"
Very nice present for me, thank you a lot
✨ ⛵⛵⛵ Merry Christmas in July!!!
Come on be honest who didn’t pull up their collar up and do the flash Harry walk in his theme came in
Piano is a difficult instrument to record well for any sound engineer. Making a Concert Steinway sound like the mediocre Challen we had at school must have been a challenge. Lovely stuff!
The genius of this is balancing celestial with a full orchestra. Great tune too. Roderick loves his French horns!
You're very kind and, yes, I think I would have been a horn player in another life! My new symphony is to be recorded later in the year - plenty of action for the horns in that.
I attended Mahler's 2nd Symphony "Resurrection' with Klaus Tennstedt conducting the LPO and Chorus and Soloists. The venue was the Royal Festival Hall in London, 1981. It was an amazing experience that I will never forget. I have heard other live performances of Mahler 2, but it was the Tennstedt LPO performance in 1981 that stays with me. Thankfully the concert was recorded by BBC Radio 3 and is available on the LPO Label. In May 1993 I saw Klaus Tennstedt and the LPO perform Maler's 7th Symphony at the RFH. In my opinion he was one of the Great Mahler Conductors. Thanks to Roderick Elms for posting this edition of Desert Island Discs.
Tennstedt's Mahler was extraordinary. Playing in his Maher 8 was emotionally draining. However, I also played the concertante piano part of Stravinsky's Petrushka with him and LPO - that came with some trepidation as I didn't associate him with such repertoire. I was very wrong - what a fantastic experience that was, and I'm delighted that it's been released on CD, along with so many of his other performances from the RFH.
David I too was in the RFH in 1981 for Tennstedt's Mahler 2... It has remained in my head and my heart every day since then.... I was poleaxed by the performance, and was unable to applaud at the end through sheer shock at the experience I had just gone through. So glad I can contact someone who was also there in the hall with me that great day. Possibly the greatest concert I ever went to, throughout what is a very long life.
Hello Many thanks for your reply. I wholeheartedly agree with you. It is one of the few concerts that I will never forget. I remember being in the RFH prior to the concert with a sense of a great occasion about to happen . I was totally overwhelmed by the performance. Thanks to Klaus Tennstedt's interpreatation it is my favourite Live performance of Mahler's great work. I have attended several live performances of Mahler 2 since then, but none equals the performance I heard in London RFH in 1981. Klaus Tennstedt was a very unique interpreter of Mahler. I'm so grateful to have had the experience oh Mahler's 7th Symphony in the RFH in May 1993. Wishing you all best wishes. David (Smith) @@Antoineduval159
Simply wonderful! Many thanks for uploading this! histclo.com/image/date/2010/11/22/eg-class01s.jpg
Really incredible, moving composition and performance - I heard about it through the abrsm sax grade 8, but I'm obsessed with this cor anglais and orchestra version :) thank you for writing it, I love it
How very kind of you. This is the original version, of course. I'm delighted that you like it!
@@roderickelmsmusic ahh I see, makes sense of course! Wish more people could know your music :)

"That yer mum? Yeah, corse it is. No mistaking that. Woarr, whaata couple dames eh" *tips hat*
thank you very much for this! what was it like playing for Tennstedt?
As a keyboard player, I only got to play around 3-4 concerts with him - much if his repertoire was without a keyboard. part Mahler 8 was a highlight, but I also played the concertante piano part for two performances of `Petrushka which was an amazing experience. I'd not imagine this as being his repertoire, but it worked so well, and he was very kind to me. The performance from the Royal Festival Hall is available on CD.
They sound great, Rod!
Thank you, Philip, very kind.
Tennstedt becomes even more amazing when you consider the circumstances of his life. He had nearly washed himself up when Kurt Masur took him to the West, and, of course, the rest is history. He was bumbly, stumbly, often a tad too intoxicated, and, according to a chorus girl who worked with him on Mahler's 8th, had no ego at all and they all adored him. I will listen to anyone conduct Mahler (except Maazel), but Klaus' Mahler is the touchstone of all others.
The humility was quite remarkable - all the more so when you consider so many of his colleagues. It was a privilege to have worked with him, and playing with the LPO in those Mahler 8s at the RFH will always be an extraordinary memory - luckily preserved on video, and CZcams.
I saw Tennstedt lead Mahler 7 with Cleveland and Mahler 9 with Boston--unforgettable!
Ridiculous remark about Maazel. He was great especially in Mahler. Obviously you don't know his Vienna/ CBS cycle, with the best ever recording of the fourth symphony. By the way , I saw Tennstedt live with the Rotterdam PO in an outreageous Beethoven cycle and Bruckner 7 and a great Mahler 5 with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
very nice early merry christmas
I like Klaus Tennstedt very much...a great artist...what a pity I could not see him live in a concert, but thanks to CZcams I see him conducting...and I am very happy to be able to listen to his voice and know more about his life...thanks a lot!!
It was a privilege to play for him, and I'm so pleased I kept this broadcast.
Thanks so much for posting this - there is so little of Tennstedt talking and also to hearing his choices of music. one of the more important of the DID series.
Thanks, from another Tennstedt devotee.
This is a far better version . czcams.com/video/5FMrXW82YMI/video.html
What fun! Wonderful. And so quintessentially English.
Thank you !! FMエアチェックかしら? 素晴らしい記録!! 私はテンシュテットのデザートアイランドディスクはBBCからダウンロードで聞いてました。
Many viola jokes criticize the intonation and timing of viola players. This is because the viola section in an orchestra traditionally sits in front of the brass and winds and can't hear themselves play, can't hear each other play, and can't hear themselves think. So, the viola section of the orchestra is scorned for being out of tune and out of touch -- but it isn't the violas' fault. Move the trumpets to behind the first violins and see what happens.
Q. What separates the violas from the apes? A. The second violins
Used to work with Alistaire Fryer when I was a copywriter at Kirkwoods. We used Paul back in the 80s for a TV commercial for May & Baker Garden care. He wrote a brilliant Spike Jones-like number for a stop-frame animated commercial with a voice-over by Dereck Nimo.
Searching now. Let's hope it's not lost media! Thanks for sharing!

"couple of pints..... maybe a curry later" - the best bit :)
lovely
Aww - thank you!
The main theme (heard at 2:13) sounds a bit like "The Liberty Bell March" - which, some years later, also became a classic musical accompaniment to classic British comedy. And I wonder whether John Cleese, Graham Chapman & Co. picked that march because of its similarity to this, and thus comic resonance.
Sousa might be mildly amused. Malcolm Arnold would surely turn in his grave!
Delightful!
What fun!!
RIP Christopher Palmer. He had done all the arrangements and orchestrations.
Indeed he did - great chap. We worked together on a number of recording projects, mostly with the LSO.
Great
Wow that was such fun for everyone - conductor, orchestra, pianists, audience - and us. Magnificent !
W O N D E R ful. Thank You.
Wonderful. I can't think of another composer with the range of Malcolm Arnold.
Takes me back. A more innocent era...……..and yet, possibly not.
