Americana Festival 2024 Flatbed Band
The Original Flatbed Band performs during the 2024 Centerville Ohio, Americana Festival 4th of July Parade! Originating along the Ohio River, in Gallipolis, Ohio, the OFB has made appearances at the River Recreation Festival of Gallipolis, since 1985, the year John Edelmann, the Band's director, first conceived of the idea. Along with the aid of several high school band members, John assembled a few trumpets, a tuba, flute, clarinet, and a drummer, and registered as a float at that year's 4th of July parade. The band has returned approximately every 5 years or so, to the delight of the parade attendees. 2024 was the first year the band made an appearance outside of Gallia County!

The Choir at Holy Angels frequently does this tune for patriotic events, be they 4th of July, or 9/11 (especially). Since June 30 was sort of close to the 4th, and we'd have the instruments to pull it off in fine form, (with a snare drum even!!), we did this at Holy Angels as part of my final Mass music plan... Tamera Hemmerle and Tammy Schaff were the soloists respectively... O America, you're...

Fr. Dan, who was the pastor at Holy Angels from 2001-2013, hired me in 2003 as the part-time music director. It was fitting, and I was honored to have Fr. Dan preside at my final Mass. Fr. Dan called Moses and myself up to the altar following the homily, and gave Moses a blessing on behalf of his entire family who have led the music at the Saturday 5pm Mass at Holy Angels since 2012. Opening tunes from Holy Angels Church, 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time, next to my last regular Sunday Mass. The entrance hymn was "Praise to the Lord", which, somewhat as planned, happened to be one of the hymns I played for my initial interview with a few members of the hiring "committee" in the summer of (August 20th actually) 2003. And the second selection here is the Glory to God from the Mas...

This for me was the highlight of the day....just beautiful, John. Bravo to you for 21 interesting, unique and uplifting years !
Love this! ❤️ It sounds SOOO good! Really touched my heart and gave me chills at one point. ❤
Thank you for this one last songwriting collaboration together and for managing to get it done for us to do in church prior to your retirement..I'm really happy with how the song turned out..thank you ❤
Is there a place I can get the sheet music for this from? I have a copy of the St. Gregory Hymnal but it is not in there.
i can send a pdf of the copy ... what's your email address?
Thank you for posting this rendition. It is one of my favorite classical pieces.
My choir church choir recently sang this anthem. It's so beautiful and wonderful to sing.
I've used this in Lent pretty much ever since I had a choir from 1990 on or so. I was introduced to it by the schola group at the University of Dayton - while a student there 1980-84.
Not being a purist myself and knowing how difficult it's is to play this classic piece, I have to tell you that you did a great job! 👍
Thanks...I played that last year...this year I'm planning on a variations on the theme ...
Awww... beautiful tribute, great photos. BTW John, I think you favor your maternal grandpa!
What a sweet way to pay tribute to your parents, very sentimental. God Bless
Thanks!
Extremely beautiful! I don't know this melody, where is it from? Looking for the same title on CZcams, an old Beatles song comes out. But it has nothing to do with it, it's different.
Thanks...I wrote it the night before my concert in Dayton in 2014 ....
@@JohnEdelmann My compliments. It is truly a beautiful melody. 👍
@@Roberto-pd8vn thanks again - the tune actually has two titles .. one for the concert/weddings, called the Night Before [the concert], (I used it as an improvised instrumental during the intermission actually when we took up a collection for the church music ministry). But also for another version, with 'pseudo' lyrics ... czcams.com/video/elLISFRIjcM/video.html i used it as a memorial sort of, for a Standard Schnauzer rescue we had, named Junior. It also works as a funeral tune. In this case, it's called "The Day We Said Goodbye".
@@JohnEdelmann I renew my congratulations. I really like it. Perhaps the version I prefer is just this. I love the sound of the flugelhorn. 👍
so ... the closest tune i found to this is Crystal Palace on the Windham Hill Winter's Solstice IV album ... this tune is probably where i got the idea subconsciously...
Here because of the Petersens' version. It's funny how the story of the two versions are inter-twined. I like your instrumental version of the song by the way.
Thanks! Glad you stopped by....
You were right. It is a very good performance. You play piano really good. Maybe you should think about making professional videos too. By the way, I'm subscribed. 👍
This melody entered my head and reached my heart. I often listen to your piano version and love it. Thanks again John for your help with my research and best wishes for a Happy Easter. Roberto
too kind .. thanks ... if you want, please check out some of my other solo instrumentals or tunes like Gabriel's Oboe --- on my channel (juanboy2k). take care... and Happy Easter !
Hi John. I heard this song for the first time on Petersens' YT channel and I think it is very beautiful indeed. Can you give me more historical information on this piece? Author, singer, year? I thank you in advance.
Roberto - thanks ... I hadn't heard the Petersen's version until just now actually. And it was as he said, Young Life - at UD Campus (for me). I'm looking at the original right now, and there's no indication of a composer unfortunately.
@@JohnEdelmann Thanks John. You were very kind to answer me. I will continue to search, although I have found that it is very difficult to find anything on the web. 🙏
@@Roberto-pd8vn turns out, the girl friend i learned it from, had Jon Petersen as her Young Life leader ... and taught her to play guitar... i had no idea...
@@JohnEdelmann Thanks again John, you were still very helpful. I think that over the years the song may have changed its title and that is why it is not found.
@@Roberto-pd8vn From what I garnered by doing some google searches, the Young Life song collection is quite massive - and probably not easy to determine who wrote much of anything. There is an Amazon book from 1972 or so, (for $600+) ! that probably has the song listed -maybe. But unless you can run into the person/persons who actually composed it, my guess is you're going to have zero luck tracking down its history any further. And I doubt the name ever changed.
Thank you so much for posting! One of the best times of my life! Sound of music ❤️ so wonderful to have it!
you're most welcome -- sometimes my video archive comes in most handy...!
The Petersens will boost your view count!!
I guess -- had no idea .. but the leader of that band found the song the SAME way I did -- it was Young Life actually to -- at the University of Dayton. My friend was a member - she played violin in my choir at UD. We sang this song at some of her prayer services and it especially caught my attention. Wouldn't be surprised if the music the Petersen's used was the same copy I had! A simple mimeograph copy with just the lyrics. Not even a key... lol.
Beautiful..
This was amazing. It brought back a lot of memories. I wish I could have seen it in person. Mrs. Fischer was an excellent teacher. I remember when I wanted to sing a solo at contest. I was never very good but she was as willing to work with me as she was those that were good.
Thank you for posting this... brought back some great memories from Grandma and my childhood. I was ten years old when Grandma retired and to me, watching all the practices and the finale was like watching a Broadway show unfold. To see her at her peak is priceless.
You're most welcome Jennifer! I was just glad I had the tapes readily available. I can provide a link to the video file on Google drive if interested...

This is a new/updated version of David Haas' Jesus, The Compassion of God. It was never revised by Haas, but I arranged this version for the 2010 revision of the missal.
This is beautiful!
John, I have been looking sheet music of this arrangement for years. Where did you find it? Beautiful performance.
Congratulations! I'm looking for this score like crazy ...do you have anything written down? I sent a message to Placido Domingo Jr. but I haven't heard anything yet ... I would love to sing this for my church in MD! Many blessings ... Celio!
Celio Guimaraes send me an email at edelmann@hcst.net
A very touching song and so emotional sung by Placido Domingo. Thanks for making this available. I'm glad to have discovered it.
+V. BaH Your welcome ... it does sound like Placido in this version, but it's a local guy from West Chester OH.
Marvellous!
No body else has their own song like we do.
Trayne1837 was that one written by Lee.
+Trayne1837 Lee Duryea we think ... no idea who has a copy of the original ... this is my "play it by ear" arrangement for our little band....

Stephen Mubarak is very talented and wonder if he compose any of his own music.
This is so beautiful! Thank you! Did you ever put this into sheet music?
Thanks.... appreciate the kind comment!
do you have the sheet music for this?
@@EdenMorgan13 I do not ! I could add this to my list of transcriptions to look at doing.... this was all ad lib..
sweet. kudos.
This is a Yamaha P250 ... and yes it's midi'd to the actual pipe organ..
What digital piano is this? It sounds great. I believe you have the pipe organ connected to it as well??
Beautiful piece, John! Who is the composer? (Just kidding...)
Thanks ... yes that is a pipe organ that is midi'd to my keyboard in the loft. Very handy that! I'll let Joy Farwell (the oboist) know you like her breathing!
Thanks ... it is one of my absolute favorites too. Yes... half way thru I toss on the midi connection to the pipe organ console that is sitting adjacent to my keyboard....
I love this song! Awesome! Do I hear an organ somewhere or is it that I am just so mesmerized with the sound? The oboe player is awesome and his "breathing" is totally awesome.
Gorgeous! The choir of Holy Angels sing so beautifully----they are a very talented group of singers. Thanks for posting!
John is a wonderful musician. I make a point of coming to the masses which he and the choir will be performing!
Beautiful!
I like! A great arrangement, you should transcribe it!
Wonderful voices...
Yeah,a piano alone can't compete with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Adiemus Singers, but congratulations on internalizing this composition (and others) enough to work it out.
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
