The Power of Reflection: How Thinking Improves Learning & Performance - ft. Giada Di Stefano
A little bit of reflection goes a long way in maximizing what we learn from an experience. Giada Di Stefano outlines both laboratory and field experiments that show the unexpected power of reflection.
Her work shows how valuable it can be to the learning process and that in some situations it’s more beneficial than additional practice.
We work through her paper that outlines:
- the best strategies for reflection
- when reflection is most effective
- how we can use these strategies as individuals and leaders
This is a great episode for both learners and leaders.

Learning by Thinking: Giada’s huge paper: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2414478
Giada Di Stefano's research brings to light the significant role that reflection plays in learning and innovation within organizations. She demonstrates that when individuals take the time to think back on their experiences, pondering over what worked, what didn't, and why, they unlock deeper learning. This isn’t just about reminiscing; it’s an active process where insights are drawn, leading to better decision-making in the future.
Her findings suggest that reflection is more than a personal growth tool-it's a catalyst for organizational change and innovation. By encouraging a culture where team members regularly reflect on their actions and outcomes, organizations can foster an environment ripe for innovation and adaptability. Di Stefano’s work indicates that making reflection a part of the daily routine can significantly enhance performance at both individual and company levels. It proposes practical steps for organizations, such as setting aside time for reflective practices, encouraging open sharing of insights, and using tools to facilitate reflection.
In essence, Di Stefano’s research underscores the importance of reflection not just for personal improvement but as a strategic element for organizational success. It suggests that embedding reflection into organizational practices can drive continuous improvement, innovation, and a competitive edge. Her work bridges the gap between individual learning and collective organizational growth, offering a blueprint for how companies can harness the power of reflection to navigate the complexities of today's business landscape.

Carol Dweck - A Study on Praise and Mindsets
Not only the psychological safety, but also the thought and knowledge of entrepreneurship as coming forward within Digital transformation and it’s innovation hub. Also knowledge should not only be gathered at schools, but also online, in fora, community groups, networking and creativity. Together with VR and AR and online teaching. Also the different professional areas need to be interlinked to get the full potency from it. Think logical and philosophical!!!
If I only I had a nickel for every time you said 'growth mindset' in this video....
Reflecting is now a big part of my role mentoring juniors, very powerful indeed
very interesting!
Very stoic. It is not the response of our body that is bad, but our interpretation of it.
Nice

Thank you for this beautifully told story around psychological safety! Such an important part of success and so often misunderstood. Love your energy and jam here!
Appreciate this video, usefull for myself right now.
@Trevor Ragan thank you dear , it really valuable lesson .
We can get to a point where we feel comfortable doing things we care about even if there is some uncertainty. I only say this because I don’t want people to think it’s totally impossible. By us doing that we block ourselves in the same way we did when it wasn’t possible for stress to be good. I speak this from experience of training thousands of soldiers, and from when explosions were going off around me multiple times while deployed, and I was able to keep cool. I can still experience stress from much less, like my reputation being on the line 😅, after all I am here, but I don’t want you or anyone else saying, “I’m always going to feel like this from that and I have no choice.” Of course, there’s nothing wrong with proper framing of stress though.
5:01 This is an extremely dangerous mindset. This is called LABELING, to label those that don't agree with your theory as not thinking practice is useful, they backdown at challenges, get discouraged and get defensive/take feedback personal is absurd. The great entrepreneurs of the world, do you think they feel that way? The greatest pianist, do you think they feel that way? These fallacies cannot be taken as gospel. This is wild!
This is BOGUS. I wonder why we don't have 50000 Einsteins in the world. A gift is a gift, someone can strive ALL they want, if they don't have the gift...you won't be an Einstein. This is a mentality of flattening the curve, lowering the standard. This will be another "theory" debunked.
Listening to this 10 years ago Ted Talks: czcams.com/video/RcGyVTAoXEU/video.htmlsi=O3SZ7KsJieO1xYzr
I am 57 and I have had a naturally optimistic viewpoint my whole life. However, I realized that over time I had developed a fixed mindset about myself in some areas. In particularly, in learning new skills. "As a Man (or woman) thinketh in his heart, so is he." -Proverbs 23:7 Powerful. Love this video which illustrates this so beautifully and practically.
As a new teacher, I really needed to watch this video! Thank you. Using the word "learner" to describe our students as opposed to good at math/ not good at math is brilliant.
You are not born with skills, you are born with talents. Skills are built on your talents. Those with the underlying talent have a leg up on learning related skills that others don't.
This video is still a school assignment. 🥴
I did not expect for that beat to drop so hard at the end
omg my teacher made me do this worksheet and you write three things that surprised you but I already knew this stuff so idk what to writeeee😭
I had literally 100 of chances to approach a girl i like but i made my move not even a single time
