Saw this production at Lincoln Center in 1988. While Sutton Foster has the dance cred over Patti Lupone, Patti can belt these lyrics out a lot more powerfully than Sutton can. The juxtaposition makes a great point of comparison between two dynamite performances, each different from the other, but equally powerful. The show is pure cornball but that’s its charm.
She leaves Sutton Foster in the dust....😅
When I was in my first musical as an ensemble member, I remember my director showing all of us this clip as an example of how much an excellent ensemble can contribute to a number. The choreography and facial expressions from the non-principals are spot on here, especially from Jk Simmons
