I tried the same method. I wasn't as patient as you and cracked the digitizer. We ordered a new one ($32). It had double sided tape already on there so I used that but when I tried it out there was massive ghost touching. So I cleaned it better and used the double sided gorilla tape and everything has been working so far (a week or so).
