The McCormick Deering hay press is from the 1915-1918 era. It is powered by a 6hp Stover/Sandwich (double tagged) engine made in 1915. This is a hit & miss engine that only fires when needed to keep up the speed. The stationary baler was before the days of the tractor powered units that were pulled through the field and picked up the windrow. They parked it by the straw stack (from the threshin...

    That was likely first used with horses. My grandad bought one with 2 young guys. Found out whenever he needed it they were using it to make money bailing for other people. Sold out his share. Growing up, dad was VERY tight with his bailing wire. If I used to much on a fence post, hed say, Yer grandad see u wasting that much wire hed whip yer ass. Next to the last time I was home, round bout near 10yrs or more, I found a bundle of straight wire in perfect condition laying on the floor in the hay loft next to a box that held ground corn for our cows, in perfect condition

    NICE,, late model 4020 with console. We had a 127 on a JD A and then I think we later put it on a 70 maybe,, but not sure, I know dad said it was a pain to put on, he had it suspended from the rafters in the shed.

    Very rare to see a mounted picker on a 4020 but my Minnesota neighbor liked his mounted picker so much that when his John Deere 60 " conked out" he bought an extra front end and mounting brackets for his 4020 and used it a few years before switching over to combining.

    Yeah, hit-and-miss was probably just a simpler way to govern speed, until engineers found better ways to do it. Any engine is governed in a way, even a gas pedal in a car is a type of governor. But in a stationary engine, or a tractor, generator, air compressor, or any application where you set one engine speed, there has to be a way for the engine to respond to variations in the load demand without a change in speed, or you'd be constantly having to reset the speed throttle with every change.

  • @Guzzist11
    @Guzzist11 Před 12 lety

    oh i see. pretty much like a hit-and-miss engine right?

  • @junkdeal
    @junkdeal Před 12 lety

    It' d fire as needed to maintain a minimum flywheel speed. It'd run away if it didn't have this governing method. Like kicking yourself along on a skateboard. On the straight, not so often, on a hill, more often. But once you load that engine down with work, it'd pop off every time to try to keep it's speed up. It would do that until it ran out of horsepower, begin to slow down, and halt. Like a fan-governor on a lawnmower. If the air movement decreases over the paddle, the engine speeds up.

  • @Happyeitherway

    Guzzist11, The governor ,on old engines, would hold the exhaust valve open to control the speed. Instead of throttle governed, it was "hit and miss". The breathing in and out through the exhaust also helped cool it. When under a load it would fire more often to keep the speed up. "Hit & Miss" or "Spit & Pop" is a common term used by old engine buffs, for this type of engine. Old one cylinder Maytag engines were 2 cycle and cut off the ignition to control the speed.

  • @Guzzist11
    @Guzzist11 Před 13 lety

    Is that normal that he fires like once every 5 sec? is he really running that slow (rev/min?) or are there only a few backfires?

  • @Happyeitherway

    Actually it is not that quiet. Once it is started and he turns the decompression off, it really cracks when it fires. My camera's automatic volume control cuts the loud sounds off so quick they sound like a click. Same thing happens when I video a hit and miss engine or firecrackers, etc. Aside from that it is a real experience to see this tractor run. Tim and Jim done a fabulous job of restoring this 100 year old tractor. Hats off to them!
