Retro Magazines Ep:01 - C&VG - First Edition, November 1981
It's November 1981 and a completely NEW type of computing magazine hits the shelves in the UK. Rather than pouring scoffing at video gaming, instead Computer and Video Games would celebrate it this new aspect of computing in all its forms.
Join me as I return to a time before the stalwarts of the 8-Bit micro scene here in the UK. No Spectrum, no Commodore 64. So just WHAT computers were people using in 1981. Join me to find out and a whole lot more!

Repair & Refurb Two Broken External Amiga Floppy Drives

I have two broken Amiga external 3.5" floppy drives and its about time I fixed them. These drives were received as part of my Amiga 4000 bundle, that proved to mainly contain broken retro kit. But that does not need to be a barrier to us, does it! Watch and see how I take these once highly desired, and needed external drives and get them back on their (rubber) feet again. Do you need a new Amiga floppy disc drive? Well, there are NO new Amiga drives out there, but there are many many PC drives. However, these do not work on the Amiga. I'm having a bit of a fight with my Fastlane card as well. Had problems with the image becoming corrupted. Although not clearly visible on the BlueSCSI wiki menu, an article regarding SD Cards can be found and says to avoid all SanDisk cards. I bought a high endurance Samsung card and the corruption went away. Thought I'd point this out as it does appear you have a SanDisk card.

    • @RetronautTech
      @RetronautTech Před 4 dny

      AH, a fellow fastlaner. Yeah, they are a little tricky. Currently mine is totally our of order, or rather it might be my A4000's riser card. I had to put it and the Fastlane back in, out several times to install a CD-Rom Drive. Because the A4000 is a nightmare to add drives is right.... So after the 5th or 6th insertion (which required force) it was either not seeing the card, or reporting it with some gibberish IDs and the wrong types. So yeah... argh. Another video when I test this again. Who knows it might fix itself... But I'm assuming some solder joint got cracked on the riser card, the motherboard, or maybe the Fastlane. What I need to check this is some test Zorro card. If anyone has one they don't need, please send it my way. It can be for something no one needs these days, like a serial expansion. I just need a KNOWN good Zorro card to test with.

    • @togst
      @togst Před dnem

      Ouch, never a good feeling. I'm sure you will get your riser card sorted out! I personally end up with seemingly random crashes, but found this happen every time with WHDLoad. I can see in the debug logs either timeout messages from the pi, or a watchdog message. Having tried all sorts of combinations of settings both on the BlueSCSI and on the Amiga, I am convinced it isn't compatible. It works for the most part, but not fully. Stable and fully working with the exact same setup on IDE with an S-ATA adapter. Would like to try a ZuluSCSI, but it is still pending to be shipped from the vendor after several months. Looks like I have to use an S-ATA drive and either sell or retire the Fastlane card. Not the outcome I wanted, as this is a much more elegant solution.

Worked on all the DRS kit from DRS 300, 3000, 6000, the desktop M series and the Ergo Pro line (as well as ICL VME on Series 39 mainframes). Ah yes, the SPARC servers, I had forgotten those. I remember seeing them in the office once or twice. Our floor was Intel dominated. I sat in the area where the sales people and account managers worked. They were mostly targeting the British Gas's, British Telecom size companies. On the 2nd or 3rd floor, there were a bunch of Unix people, and I guess they would have been using the SPARC machines. I once asked them to provide for me some graphics and icons from their UI and a discussion between two of them that was worth of the IT Crowd broke out. It was about 10 minutes long, and they considered sending the files via this server, converting to that protocol then telnetting into another server and so on. It appears putting the files on SOME kind of floppy that was compatible with a PC was not an option. TWO TOTALY SEPARATE WORLDS, it was nuts! :)

    On a second note, I absolutely despise Discord. I cannot precisely say why, but I think it might be my similar hatred of Twitter: conversations aren’t linked well. One persons response requires effort to trace back to the question it is intended for. That “linkage” is EXACTLY the thing computers are good at, yet it seems to fall to the user (me) to do that linkage.

    • @ChrisThomas-lt8jd
      @ChrisThomas-lt8jd Před 7 dny

      Discord is more of a chat environment, right? It really can’t do long conversation on a topic, in the way a forum can. However, both forms suffer from entropy of focus, but it’s certainly more on Discord. Still, if people want to chat, then it’s a better fit. Sadly, CZcams membership does not support Forums as a perk and it also does not integrate with any. With Discord though it does. So you can grant access to specific channels, to specific member tiers. If CZcams does go on to support a forum, I’ll consider adding it. But for now I have several Discord communities to build 😅

  • @greglovekamp
    @greglovekamp Před 7 dny

    I certainly understand a need to want to profit, but I find it disingenuous to simultaneously say “I’m not creating a paywall” and “I’ll create some videos for only my patrons.”

    • @ChrisThomas-lt8jd
      @ChrisThomas-lt8jd Před 7 dny

      Well, you can’t have exclusive member perks, without having SOMETHING be exclusive. To be honest, these videos will tend to be more of the behind the scenes in nature. Like those production features on a DVD/BluRay. They are bonus material, rather than the feature. So the movie remains free, whilst the making of is member only.

It should all work, but please bear with me as I work it all out and then fine tune it. I can understand your viewpoint. Out of interest, what are the reasons you prefer Patreon? I have found it to be very problematic, because if offers zero integration with most platforms. For instance, getting CZcams to play well with Patreon membership seems VERY problematic. And alsoCZcams have integrated with Discord so that CZcams memberships can be carried over into Discord servers. All very integrated, whilst Patreon puts ALL the onus on you to make it all happen. Quite simply, its too much work.

      @@RetronautTech Yes, you definitely would want the pro-max when it comes to video quality. I would even consider 4k 60p recording to do 1080p final -- reason being you can zoom x4 digitally without much loss in quality.

    • @RetronautTech
      @RetronautTech Před 4 dny

      @@duelmonitor I record at 4k, but I lose some fidelity, as I have to do a digital zoom, as I have some equipment visible in-frame. I keep it to 30fps though, as for video about old putes, I think 60fps is not needed. I do record some footage in 120fps though, so I can then play back in slo-mo, for those nice computer shots. So yes a Pro Max is really where Im aiming at. A modern Pro Max, say 12+ will run modern Photo/Video apps, so you get a really decent level of control. I have looked at a Sony Vloggers cam, and it does have attachable lenses and Im sure its more pro. But its £1k plus, so unless I get significant numbers of people JOIN the channel, then I'll have to stick to use iPhones. Which in terms of quality is VERY good, but not having specific lenses, IS limiting.

    If you're interested in some of the technical issues with the IIGS, I'd checkout another video titled "The Apple IIGS Megahertz Myth" which helps to dispel a myth that Apple intentionally hobbled it on release. Also the IIGS both borrowed from and also helped to evolve the Mac GUI and I/O (i.e. color, ADB devices, firmware toolbox services, etc). I really think what killed the Apple II line was both Jobs focusing on the Mac and his departure from Apple + Wozniak basically stepping away day-to-day development. The IIGS pretty much died when Apple released the 1MB IIGS in 1989 - basically an incremental vs revolutionary improvement (i.e. same graphics, and kept the 2.8 MHz "fast" mode while the 65816 at this point could reliably run faster.) Also 32-bit machines were just coming to market.

    • @RetronautTech
      @RetronautTech Před 8 dny

      Yes, I did watch that video, and its certainly very insightful. It made me aware of the CPU used, and its somewhat troubled development and tuning up. I noticed recently that the same chip was also used in a Commodore 64 accelerator, released in the late 90s, with the chip clocked at 20mhz! Amazingly, it actually worked really well, in terms of compatibility, however, it was hampered by its late arrival AND tiny user base. Still an interesting link there... Honestly, I think what killed the Apple II was time. It was a machine of the 70s, through and through. A marvel of its time, but in the end it had to give way to newer architectures. The IIgs was a great machine, except for that CPU, which really was too slow for its intended purpose, remember Wozniak specced it, but in the end did not really get the chip he expected, at least at launch and for several years afterwards. Maybe if he had made a cleaner break, and gone for a 68030 or even a 286/386 based machine then things could have been different. IMHO it would have been better to have an Apple IIe on a card, with the stock processor, or maybe the 4mhz one from the IIc? Then keep the real fireworks for the newer CPU + chips. It made me remember an idea some had when the Amiga was launched, that it also should be backwards compatible. But again that would have required a full C64 on a board inside the Amiga, and that would have held it back in terms of cost AND case space. So maybe Commodore did make the right move, forced on them by the Amiga technology they bought in. Another interesting tid-bit. Apparently the designed of the IIgs's sound chip, had plans for the SID chip in the C64 to have 20 voices, but in the end it had to be shelved because of time or costs (not sure which). But of course this idea came to fruition on the IIgs. Again, how wild would it have been for the SID to have had 20 voices, that really would have been a revelation back in 82 :)

And to be fair, I don't claim to be an expert on everything. I'm not a reader of Fusion, ZZap Amiga etc (thought I do have one ZZap annual). I turned up at this event as a paid attendee, and learnt what I could during the day. I find the comments section of videos, is a good place to share information the author may not have known. After all, there were hundreds of people at the event, and of course many of those may have insights there can share here, to flesh out what I filmed on the day.

      Sounds like an idea, I guess I could try and find where it connects to. Only issue is, this might involve taking the drive totally apart to make the mod, but I guess that depends on the construction of each drive. In truth, each drive uses a controller chip where this line goes to. But sadly, specs for nearly all of the chips do not appears online, beleive me I checked. If they were, then there would be a lot less hit and miss with each different drive/chip type.

      Well, I think he was a perfectionist. But sometimes you HAVE to compromise. The core part of a product is its functionality, and having your micro melt down in front of you, well, its not top of most people wish list eh? Making this mistake once with the Apple II was a learning experience. Twice with the Apple III was, well, a face palm. But to then do the same thing with the G4 Cube, well, thats unforgivable, even if it was a good 20 or so years later eh?

Archer and Chris were good friends and Chris took onboard his gaming items after he left us. Amiga room that I organised with SWAG, YAG and ANT, it was tight but limited really in what we had, we could have spilled over into the cafe area but it was awkward, did open the doors to cafe to make it a bit better.. surely you recognised us except when I bumped into you, we had a blast making this work for Zzap. The person with the ST who kept quiet a lot is Colin Porch, developer of Head over Heals 1 and 2.

Said it involved a seed of white, blurred on one frame, and then gained so it made a harder edge, and then masked by the veins. Repeat it for each frame, and the blood creeps up the veins. I guess a similar approach can be used for the light flow effect. Particles as well, are a pretty cool medium when used with additive/sub/multiply. Yeah cool stuff. The options for vintage computer fairs seems pretty poor here in the UK. If you like vintage PC and Apple etc there doesn't seem to be much going on. Commodore and Sinclair enthusiasts seem better served. I remember back in the 90s going to regular computer fairs with loads of stalls for shareware CDROMs and software for sale as well as PC components and built systems etc. All that was 'cutting edge' at the time and is now 'vintage' 🙂

      I'm a little frustrated at how small the UK scene is, but to be fair t Fusion, they did a decent job on this show, though it is a little blinkered (commodore). I guess an issue can be a good location with the SCALE to fit a unified show. Personally, I'd be VERY happy to have show where ALL machines have equal billing. This seems more the norm over in the USA. Talking of which, it can be a little unfair for us to try and emulate the USA shows, as they do have 6x times our population... Apple II, TRS-80 do seem to be super niche over here in the UK. I think both were VERY expensive back in the 70s, and so were not mass market over here. The PET did better as it was chosen for some educational uses (I have no idea why). Then the BBC Micro was launched and that filled that niche. But yeah, for future shows, I would like to see more representation by ALL old machines, not just the Commodore or Sinclair strains.
