    Time and distance both have their purpose. I assume, if you're a track runner like Ingebritsen, having a high amount of certain distances in your training will give you good results. This might be a reason why people that come from relatively short distances to ultra running focus on distance when time on feet might be the better measure.

    Back in the day, which is also known as at school, our class did some exercises and then everybody took his pulse for 15 seconds. Pulse times four was your max HR. Comparing the numbers we found, 220 - age is a rule of thumb and some guys didn't work out as hard as they should 😄. In my world 40 miles a week beats 20 miles a week and every week beats every other week and that's all I need to know. That means I will never win a race, but I am fine with that.

We ran before 1st period all the way through 1st period to have enough time to get to those distances we set for the week. The man knows what he is talking about. @@leerunsultras did I get you right on your comments. How I see what you were trying to say that people could take it as a strating point. The 220- age and if they are using the 5 zone system then they should aim for that 60-70% when doing zone 2. Amd if you want to spend the money and be more acurate you should take the lab to get the exact results. I agree with you that the 5 zone model does not have up to 80% of max hr. Maybe some really elites in some cases but in general no. Could they get confused with the 3 zone and 5 zone model?

    • @leerunsultras
      @leerunsultras Před měsícem

      @kahlis I think so, matt Fitzgerald uses lactate threshold in order to assess hr zones and recommends an easy intensity is. 75-80%. But my point still stands the traditional somewhat outdated method of 220- age is used in comparison with the 5 zone method. Personally my self I take my max heart rate from a recent hard 5k of 188bpm I then take away my resting heart rate which currently sits at 50. I then times it 0.7 and add back on my resting heart rate which gives me 146. Which funnily enough is my MAF heart rate. 180 - 39 +5. So it's quite good how it collaborates.

    • @kahlis

      @@leerunsultras it's been a while since I've read Fizgeralds 80-20 book. Seems odd that he is recomending such a high values. I'll have to re read it. MAF gets it right sometimes. I quess the point on MAF and the point you are also taking is that people mostly should slow down and run easier. I use the Karvonen model and also test the max HR. Once a year I do a lab test just to check things out. I've noticed that when you are older. Like me, 45. And have trained for years. The basic calculation models mostly get it wrong and you just have to start testing things out.

    • @leerunsultras

      @kahlis yep that's what my whole message is mate. If you had me on insta you will see that all I preach is that people don't run thier easy runs easy enough. Because when people say you should go off RPE that is totally skewed by their inability to assess how hard they are running or just by thier egos 😂😂😂😂

    Thank you so much! Really appreciate your answers and it makes a lot of sense! When you google training plans for ultra running most of them focus on increasing distance each week - which is what I have based mine off - but I like what you said about time on feet and the reduced pressure to achieve a certain distance. It also massively makes sense when adding interval and hill sessions in. I am going to give it a go! Basing any zone calculation off X minus age is already inherently flawed. You need to already have a ball park number for your max heart rate, either through a max heart rate test, or at least from your workout statistics, which 99% of watches give you. Then, basing zones simply off max heart rate, will most likely not match RPE or the values a lactate threshold test would give you. As you said, 60-70% of MHR is pretty low. In my experience, with the Karvonen Method the zones align a lot more closely to lactate test, RPE and even MAF.

    tnx. as a newborn runner I still get confused by all the different methods and different zones. enough about that for now. question: is it better and safer to train on a lower level than a too hard level?

    • @leerunsultras
      @leerunsultras Před měsícem

      Initially when starting put you need to build a solid base. That said I would recommend. Not introducing hard sessions until you have at least 12 weeks of consistent east running using progressive mileage increase in the long run

      @@thereids3625 🤣🤣🤣 I doubt it he will probably still say that 220 - your age isn't a method. Whilst I know it's not very accurate. It's one of the guides that is commonly used 😤

  • @Jason608
    @Jason608 Před měsícem

    I agree zone 2 isn't MAF, but let's not define zone 2 by starting with max HR = 220 - age either (the least accurate way to estimate your z2). %HRR is better, but outside of an expensive lab test, most running coaches are going to triangulate z2 with a combination of HR and RPE/talk-test.

    • @leerunsultras
      @leerunsultras Před měsícem

      @Jason608 yep your right 220 is just one method of calculating your max hr of which there are many. Outside the lab my favourite is the Cooper test

    Are so many not understanding this? MAF is fixed but clearly not right for most people, just the person who fits the average. Z2 can only be calculated accurately in a lab, but the Kavonen method seems reasonable and has worked well for my training. MAF for me is right on the limit between Z1 and Z2, so I run top of Z1 when doing a MAF test, or recovery run, and use Z2 for my easy runs. It's not complicated.

    • @leerunsultras
      @leerunsultras Před měsícem

      @st4331 exactly mate I used maf to run a sub 3 marathon. But maf doesn't work for so many people because of fitness levels. Maf heavily depends on high volume. Kavonen is a great method, I've also used the Cooper test using a chest strap to determine my max heart rate. There's so many ways to skin a cat and essentially you have to find what works for you. I guess my message is and always will be that too many people run their easy runs too hard without even realising it. I wish you all the best in your training and thanks for watching and taking time to comment 😊

      @@leerunsultras So true, many people still think they need to run hard to improve, yet long runs at Z1/2 are very enjoyable and after some time you find you're running as fast as you were at Z3, at least I did, and so did my son! He's now done a 100k ultra; I'm doing my second 50K in Sept. I never thought I'd be able to run that far, but slowing down has stopped the injuries and massively improved my endurance! MAF meant walking when I first started; people, need to give it time.

      @@leerunsultras I've been using Altras for about 6 years now and lately their line-up is quite a mess. Uppers don't last over a few hundred kms; Foot box volume changes between versions of the same shoe; Rubber grip is inconsistent between models. Right now I'm leaning more towards Hoka and Topo Athletic as their shoes seem to last longer than most Altras. BUT one model from Altra I will probably try in the near future is the Timp 5. I feel like it's their best model, and the 5th edition has Vibram rubber so I think it has potential.
