Mixed Media Art - Muted Palette + Collage
In this video, I use vintage book paper as collage, paint over it with white, and add a glaze of raw umber which creates a textured muted palette. It's a simple composition but one that I will definitely come back to. What are your thoughts about neutrals?

In this video, I am deliberately starting with collage papers I don't like. I suppose that is the reverse of how most people create but I needed a place to begin and it ultimately worked out. The lesson for me was to just get started and remembering that simple ideas can be the catalyst for something more. You never know what the end result might be. Thanks Cheryl!
Ok…this is fascinating to me (watching you lay out the placement). This is the first video I have seen of yours and I’m 100% intrigued. I want to do this….watching you chop the pages down to 4x4 to fit the canvases was a lesson in just do it (for me) I tend to overthink every….and I mean everything. I have subscribed to your channel and plan on getting the canvases and I’m going to go for it….. thank you 🤍🤍🤍
Oh Cheryl, I believe most of us have a tendency to overthink which basically (in my opinion) translates to a desire for perfection or fear of making a mistake. I really am no different and constantly need to tell myself, "it is only paper, it is only paint, give it a try, etc". I am so glad that you are going to give the 4X4's a try--they are really fun and easy to make. Thanks so much for watching, subscribing, and letting me know your thoughts--it is very encouraging to me.
Ooooh, ooooh, ooooh! I was pressed for time, but snuck this in and just finished following along and I am very please the way it came out. So much fun! Thank you❤
This is so awesome Jill! I am so glad you gave it a try--thanks for letting me know.
It reminds me of boats on a gloomy day at the end the racing season with no wind. Great texture and depth. You've prompted me to think about what I really love to use in my art and the subject matter too. Thanks Pam. x
That makes me so happy! That is such a good reminder for all of us that our art should be more about what we really love to make. It is so easy to get trapped into colors and subjects that other people understand or like. Thanks for watching and sharing!
I love your colour combinations and the textures you used.
Thanks Diane--sounds like we enjoy similar color palettes!
Thanks for sharing these techniques. Very atmospheric picture. I can see sunken posts in a lake
I love that Diane! It is so interesting how we can look at the same thing and see something different.
Could you write notes on the left/back side of each page? If it were me I would maybe write notes to remember what I liked about the page.
That is a great idea Elizabeth! Thanks for the suggestion.
Thanks for that suggestion Elizabeth!
Yay fun! Simple and effective.

Love everything about this
That means so much--thanks!
Great as a background for a painting ❤
I agree Elizabeth, there are endless possibilities once you get started.
Pam, thank you for sharing. Your art is minimalistic (which I prefer) and draws interest. I have been admiring (drooling over) your braceletes as well. Do you make/ design your own? I am a multi task artist and dable in jewelry as well as many other interests. i make necklaces and place small bits of my art in bezeled frames. You may want to look into that too, it really show cases snippets of your art. Same as your 4" canvases or your 3.5" x5.5" matted pieces just on a smaller scale. If you do make your own jewelry do you have a favorite resource for direction/ suppies? Always looking to learn new and exciting skills. If you do not make your bracelets/ necklaces congrats to the artisan who does! Looking forward to more of your creative works. Lisa
Thanks Lisa! Unfortunately, I can't take credit for the bracelets I wear as that is something I don't make. I imagine jewelry-making is fun and I especially love the idea of using your art in the jewelry you make--nice to use up all the small bits.
Love the textures and muted colors. I could see doing something similar on a large canvas.
Oh Linda, I hope you try something similar on a large canvas--that's a great idea!
Thank you Pam. These are lovely ❤
Thanks so much Lyn! I hope you are inspired to try it yourself.
Very interesting and yummy textures❤
Thanks Jill! I agree texture is always a good idea!
Thanks for sharing Pam . Love this ❤
I'm so glad you liked this Lyn--thanks for watching!
love it--the texture is great. thank you!
Thanks so much Patricia! I hope you are inspired to give it a try.
Love it
Thanks Linda! I hope you give it a try.
I like this idea. I was thinking making the lines into sailboats. Lots of possibilities, thanks.
Such a great idea! I do hope you take the idea and "sail" with it!
Ooh i love this process and technique! Very yummy full of texture!! Thanks for sharing Pam ❤😊
Thanks Maria! You are always so encouraging!
This is so wonderful! I am a fairly new painter, (about a year). I just now think I may be ready to upgrade my paints from Liquitex Basics and similar, to heavy body. Do people ever use heavy body for say, the background, but then use a thinner paint for the rest of the painting? I have so much to learn, omg! Lol Thanks again! :)
I am so glad you found this video helpful. In my experience as a mixed media artist (with no formal training!) I say you can use your paints however you like--thin over thick seems fine. What I would suggest is experimenting to see what you like--how much texture you want, etc. I wouldn't rush out to buy a bunch of new paints as the Liquitex Basics is perfectly fine. I am a big fan of using what you have rather than just buying for the sake of having something new. That being said, if you want to try the heavy body paint I would choose one or two colors to try and see how you like them. Thanks so much for watching!
Really fun & cool lesson!! You did it again Pam🥰
Oh Sharon, you are a bright light in my day! Thanks for making me feel like a rock star! I hope you give it a try.
I like your marks. It feels primitive.
Thanks so much! I appreciate you watching and letting me know.
I like the translucent effect and the warm tone of the paper.
I like that too!
I like to use pattern paper too but I am enable to make big marks... 😄
You can do it Loulou!! Just close your eyes and swipe the paint!!
@@pamhemmerling I will try it Pam, promised 😀
@@louloufabrique Let me know!!
This IS inspiring!! And what a handsome piece!! ~xo~
Thanks so much for your enthusiasm! I appreciate you watching and letting me know.
I love this! I too use pattern paper mainly in my junk journals but I need to start adding to my art journals. Have you tried making marks on them like you would do to deli paper? Great video!
We are definitely kindreds, Doreen--seems like we use so many of the same materials. I have made marks on the sewing paper tissue mainly using black paint--now I just need to remember where I put it!!
I love using old pattern paper as a base.
Isn't that sewing pattern tissue the best?! The patina is perfect!
This is a great way to start a page, love the big bold marks!!❤
Thanks Maria! Sometimes you just need to go for it!
You really inspire me...thankyou, you have so much to share...Gabby from NZ❤
Oh Gabby, you made my day! Thanks for your kind words!
The highly texture one in golden yellow hues...I really appreciated the fact that it lacked a clear focal point. The freedom to explore the different relationships of shapes textu color marks etc give me so much more then to be forced into a constructed narrativ
I think that is the beauty of an art journal--to explore and try things without the pressure to make a perfect piece of art. Thanks for watching!
Pam, what is the transparent black paint that you used? Thanks!
It was probably Bone Black--I think Liquitex & Golden both make it.
Thank you, Pam, so much fun! Love your ideas! Made a birthday card for my gf and did your cardboard birthday cake! It was fab!! I'm gonna make that my go to birthday card!! ❤ You keep me inspired! Thank you!😊
I am so glad to hear that Gwynned! I make that birthday cake for most of my birthday cards too!
I never want each video to be over!!!
You made my day! Thanks for that!

I love how we all see things differently--makes me happy! Thanks, Pat for watching and your kind words!
Love these!! You're a great teacher too!! I paddled up the Amazon and got my little canvases! I have the perfect place for whatever I come up with ~ maybe on a kitchen wall! Thank You so much! ~❤~ 😊
I am so glad to hear that you are giving this a try. The results can be so fun! Thanks for your kind words--I don't really consider myself a teacher but rather just sharing what I know--but maybe that's what a teacher is! Thanks for watching and letting me know.

Hello, Hope you are doing well. I was able to get a large book like you have similar to yours and am wondering if you can continue with showing how to prepare this. I can't get my book to lie flat, are you just working on one side at a time? Can you help, with suggestions. I did get one as you have because I thought maybe you would have videos and I could learn what you did and then run with my own ideas. Be well.
Hi Lisa, I'm just wondering how you prepared your vintage book before using it.....did you tear pages out? did you glue pages together to make it sturdier? That is what I do to prepare my vintage books before using them to make art. I generally work on both sides at the same time and the book typically lays fairly flat. I occasionally use binder clips or bull clips to help it lay flat. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
@@pamhemmerling Thank you for replying to me. I didn't rip them out yet as when I opened the book it did not lay flat so, I was thinking that it would not. But you seem to have success with ripping them out and then glueing the pages together. I am going to work on this. I hope you make another video showing us that book. Be well! ♥
@@lisarosemcpherson944 I definitely think it helps to rip out pages and then glue 2 pages together. I've never tried using a vintage book any other way because I like to create lots of layers and the book wouldn't have room for that if I didn't remove pages. Hopefully that will be the case for the book you are working in as well.
lol at your suggestion to speed up and mute you if desired ❤. I love listening to you 😊
You are very kind Jacki! I get many comments that suggest I talk a bit less! Thanks for watching!
