Removing the Xbox Clock Capacitor before it destroys the console
Today, join me as I attempt to future proof an original Xbox (released in 2001) gaming console, by removing the clock capacitor which is well known to leak (in versions 1.5 and below) and cause permanent damage to the motherboard. Plus, I even have a quick go at playing HALO at the end.
🟣 The clock capacitor (a 1F 2.5v supercapacitor) allowed the Xbox to keep track of time.
🟣 Removing it and not replacing (applicable to versions 1.5 and below) will just cause the system to ask you to set the time again, if the system has been off for a while.
🟣 I believe from reading online, if you remove the clock capacitor from a 1.6 board you have to definitely replace. Otherwise the console will be stuck in a infinite clock loop.

One of the things that the Apple 2 would do is the publisher would modify the format of the disk so that you could not copy it with a normal utility. What we found was that the normal DOS RWTS routines (Read Write Track Sector) would be modified and loaded into the top of system memory and the game would use that to read the modified format. So once the game was loaded into memory, we would break into the monitor and load the copy utility Muffin into memory at $1000. Then we would locate the protected RWTS in RAM and update the hooks for reading in Muffin to point to that RWTS and muffin had a copy of the normal RWTS built in so once the hooks pointed to the game's version or RWTS we could tell Muffin to just copy and it would read the protected format using the game's RWTS and then write it in normal disk format stripping out any oddball format data they used for a protection scheme. Easy :)

My friend was a programmer . He would crack C-64 games. There were games that would ask you to look at the book at a certain page and give the answer in order to run the game. It was random of course. He would remove that passkey and the game would run. I loved it when he would put a trainer mode, so you would have unlimited lives..

PSA: Not all clock caps need removed. If I'm not mistaken, there are two types of clock capacitors; an all black one marked Aerogel, and a gold and black one labeled nichicon. The nichicon's are on all 1.6 boards and some 1.4 boards. (my Halo edition and one other 1.4 board came with a nichicon.) The Aerogels are an instant remove, no questions asked. The nichicon only need removed if they are bulging. Nichicon is a Japan company and of a much higher quality and longevity. We are at the 20 year mark since the OG XBOX release so its a toss up. I have two XBOXes in service, both with original nichicon caps, both showing no bulging. As far as recapping, doing the entire board, is not always necessary. I've done a whole board including the little silver flush mounted ones...they are not fun. There is a site that does list all the potential caps you may find on an OG XBOX and how important it is to replace them. General consensus is that the big ones close to the PSU and power connector should always be replaced, especially if the are of lower quality. Also, don't forget that the PSU also has caps too. Finally, don't trust ebay or Amazon caps and especially 'kits'. They could be fakes. This is why I will never buy a recapped console off ebay. You don't know what they used. The website console5 is a great place to get high quality cap kits and you can by the kits in different packages like for the whole board, or for just the PSU regulators or even the PSU. They do offer replacement clock caps too. (no affiliation) Ok, really last thing, if you remove the clock cap, a modded XBOX with a custom dashboard connected to the internet, can be setup to auto-update the system clock.

I loved those titles where they gamified it. As a kid, it was a fun (although part of copyright we didn’t think of that) and became part of the game. Remember one I had where you got different coloured filters (like a red transparent film) you had to put over different coloured code papers. And it was a challenge solving the puzzle to get in to the game.

I own this book, still. :) Wasn't the artwork great, no CGI? But airbrush, which was hugely popular at the time. Time to get the old 'Beeb'Em' up and running. I do remember seeing, but not using one of these back at the time, they were one of the main choices, imported from England and running 'Elite'. The person was in the 4th Galaxy and had happened upon the infamous 'Dredger' ship. At the time and even to this day, this was an amazing piece of code. Using some very clever, compression al-go's and just amazing scope for the day, all within 32Kb. :) The modern version is now nearly 70 plus Gigabytes. :) But it's pedigree still shines, as written by one of the two original programmers and his team. David Brayben. Please everyone if you get the chance, check it out. To see what is truly possible with such limited resources and a whole lot of clever. :)
