Thanks, this cleared up something. Might one not think though justifiably on the superficial surface of things that antisemitism was still rooted in religious antisemitism, because Goebbels regularly referred to a ''demonic'', as did Henry Ford to a ''satanic'' nature behind Jewishness in their propaganda speeches, like ''Unmasking the Communist'': ''It was the Jew who discovered Marxism. It is the Jew who for decades past has endeavoured to stir up world revolutions through the medium of Marxism. It isthe Jew who istoday at the head of Marxism in all the countries of the world. Only in the brain of a nomad who is without nation, race and country could this satanism have been hatched. And only one possessed of a satanic malevolence could launch this revolutionary attack. For Bolshevism is nothing less than brutal materialism specu¬ lating on the baser instincts of mankind. And in its fight against West European civilisation it makes use of the lowest human passions in the interests of International Jewry.'' And one can find close parallels to these literary themes of Goebbels' propaganda in Shakespeare; ''Certainly my conscience will serve me to run from this Jew my master. The fiend is at mine elbow and tempts me, saying to me “Gobbo, Launcelet Gobbo, good Launcelet” or “good Gobbo,” or “good Launcelet Gobbo, use your legs, take the start, run away.” My conscience says “No; take heed, honest Launcelet, take heed, honest Gobbo” or, as aforesaid, “honest Launcelet Gobbo, do not run, scorn running with thy heels.” Well, the most courageous fiend bids me pack. “Fia!” says the fiend, “away!” says the fiend. “For the heavens, rouse up a brave mind,” says the fiend, “and run.” Well, my conscience, hanging about the neck of my heart, says very wisely to me “My honest friend Launcelet, being an honest man’s son”-or rather an honest woman’s son, for indeed my father did something smack, something grow to, he had a kind of taste;-well, my conscience says “Launcelet, budge not.” “Budge,” says the fiend. “Budge not,” says my conscience. “Conscience,” say I, “you counsel well.” “Fiend,” say I, “you counsel well.” To be ruled by my conscience, I should stay with the Jew my master, who, (God bless the mark) is a kind of devil; and, to run away from the Jew, I should be ruled by the fiend, who (saving your reverence) is the devil himself. Certainly the Jew is the very devil incarnation, and, in my conscience, my conscience is but a kind of hard conscience, to offer to counsel me to stay with the Jew. The fiend gives the more friendly counsel. I will run, fiend, my heels are at your commandment, I will run.'' And in that the exact same literary theme can be transposed, I often thought the two alike. Does the difference Arendt mean religious Jew hatred had to modern antisemitism mainly consist in the abnormal and over-reacted intensity of the physical acts of violence that this before - merely mental and another prejudice no more or less consumed in the fire of public hate than any other and not culminating in the same ferocity of result - as the irrational moments of the 1920s and 30s did? Unlike in Merchant of Venice, there is still a few speeches that make Shylock human, and the full extant of the violence committed on him, is the conversion of religion and one of the Christians shows a part of mercy onto him, unlike the irrational unmerciful nature of 1920s and 30s antisemitism perhaps?

Wrong. I have proof in the census that shows an identical specific ratio in the census that the republican controlled states have in common with Germany when Hitler was elected. You are a fool not to ask me what ratio in the census causes totalitarianism....Republican controlled states today have, on average, 85,000 more males than females, under the age of 40, per state. Nothing is more motivating to a poor white male redneck to convince him to vote republican or totalitarian.

this professor makes many good points but misses the most important point about what system could create such evil? and the answer is all authoritarian systems , all government is capable of the banality of evil. the system itself encourages unthinking performance in exchange for promotions. those that rock the boat in a system dont get promoted and get ostracized. thats why any and all governments are capable of this same evil. if the holocaust was due to exceptionally evil men then we dont need a book and theory to explain why they did what they did, it would be because they are evil, but her point is that there was nothing objectively evil about eichmann , aside from the human traits of not wanting to rock the boat and be promoted, and that is the "banality of evil."

The banality of evil describes the critic’s comments that you don’t understand. She in fact was trying to show it only takes a normal person in an authoritarian system to do evil, even if they are just trying to do good according to the system. No extraordinary evil intent is required.

What Berkowitz fails to note is the direct connection between the christian antisemites e.g. Poland, Ukraine, Hungry. In the 20th Century the pogroms instituted by Christian nationalists directly assisted Nazis. This was not the case in Italy, Denmark and other countries. This failure is glaring to critique and address is not only telling and problematic but a consistent problem with Berkowitz’s “analysis” of Eichmann in Jerusalem.

Would not some unease people have with proscriptivism and this chapter be obviated by using "was" instead of "is" when talking about movement formation. There was a particularism to the development of the movements that lead to a specific outcome, which today, may no longer exist or are completely different.

Professor Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was perhaps the greatest educator that ever breathed. On a small island north of Concord, New Hampshire, stands a 25-foot-tall granite statue of Hannah Duston, an English colonist Though she’s all but forgotten today, Hannah Duston was probably the first American woman to be memorialized in a public monument. Abigail Williams was among the first of the children to falsely accuse their neighbors of witchcraft in 1692, I mention them as a warning to those seeking truth to be reminded that one can not see the past with the eyes of the present, doing so makes the truth the chastity of a harlot, and he who captures the mind has no need of a blacksmith to forge shackles chains or bars.

What Arendt says in the Postscript, on p. 288, about whether or not this was a genocide, is actually quite different from what's being said here: "For the concept of genocide, introduced explicitly to cover a crime unknown before, although applicable up to a point is not fully adequate, for the simple reason that massacres of whole peoples are not unprecedented. They were the order of the day in antiquity, and the centuries of colonization and imperialism provide plenty of examples of more or less successful attempts of that sort. The expression 'administrative massacres' seems better to fill the bill". In any case - fantastic session, as always!

I am an attorney in child welfare court. I wish more (any) of my colleagues knew Arendt and this book in particular. I was trained at the UofC before leaving to lead a life of something more than marginal employment prospects and endless references back to my dissertation adviser’s favorite philosophers. The world outside the academy has both the pressing ethical and intellectual problems of the Ivory Tower and real stakes too because real present immediate and personally relevant lives hang in the balance. Maybe you guys should consider some outreach to your brother and sister professions, if you can sort out what they are. Smart people outside the academy will forgive you your collective learned defensive arrogance very quickly, just as I was forgiven (not on display here BTW). Good will goes a long way. Neighborliness matters.
