I loved JU back then to have two 7 footers on the floor was so cool so unreal. I hope they're all having great lives. I loved Burrows, Morgan and Artis. God bless them all.

I watched the championship game on an early Saturday afternoon and was pulling for Jacksonville. UCLA had 35 free throw attempts. Jacksonville had 8. UCLA made 24 free throws, Jacksonville made 7.

You listen to that Ernie Fleming and Artis Gilmore story, and you realize how much the world has changed. Very limited television, no internet back then. Therefore a guy like Artis could walk around in relative obscurity. College basketball was not yet a big thing nationally. Professional bowling outdrew it on television. You had to read about college basketball in newspapers or magazines a week late. Of course, there were all kinds of great players who could not play at most schools in the south - because they were black. It says a lot about those coaches who were kind to Ernie Fleming as a young man, how he responded with a letter, and how it all worked out. As a youngster, Artis Gilmore was so poor he did not have proper shoes.

I love Jacksonville. My uncle and grandpa used to tell me about this time when I was a kid. I grew up in Arlington and JU was a big part of my childhood. I remember the sense of pride I had when Dee Brown won the dunk contest. Strange the things you remember when you get to be older. I have fond memories of going to JU basketball games and listening to games on my radio at night. I played pick up against Reggie Law when I was younger at Bruce Park. He probably never knew how much that meant to a awkward kid that didn’t have many friends and was trying to figure out life. But I look back on my childhood in Jacksonville fondly. Thanks for posting
