An Introduction to Diesel Heaters - Are they right for you?
In this video I show how my HCalory diesel heaters works and how they run, the startup and shutdown procedures.
I'll show you the temperatures we got as well.
I did make one mistake and forgot to include the electrical demand on startup.
On startup the glow plug does put some demand on the electrical system, it fluctuated between 5 watts and 161 watts at max. This warmup procedure lasts a few minutes (depends on ambient temperature) and is something you will want to account for.
Overall there isnt much to them and you should definitely consider them for your own adventures.

Great video, love the mixture of drone and GoPro, lovely area, and great music, you have a new subscriber
Interesting, your setup looks like mine
I ran that for a while but I have since changed it out. I still kinda miss the Decked System (id love to get the new version!) and the softoppers protection, the datin fab rack was just not for me. I have since swapped over to the Leitner Rack with a small bin for electrical and and a large bin on the other side for mass storage. The new setup is working great, I should probably have done a video on it but just never did.
@@RavensEyeOffroad i want to see the new version too. I saw a used deck system for around 600 near me and I was contemplating getting it or to continue with the set up that I’ve got now. I’ve got an up too bed rack, best top soft top and SmittyBuilt RTT
@@GrantFoxOfficial my issue was the softopper frame sat below the tallest point of the decked setup. I had to actually cut a hole to allow the frame to fit. I've been thinking of getting a different rtt. Big family so it's a risk haha
The road is bumpy because many people are driving too fast. It happens that way on gravel roads too.
I know this video is a few years old now, but my Datin Fab rack just showed up today. Thanks for making the install a little easier.
Man I hope you like it! It's not too bad just lots of bolts and washers. :)
What powers the lights
I just had one of those small "solar battery banks" you can get on Amazon for $20 or so.
@@RavensEyeOffroad so what sort of plug do they fit into?
@@noshoesjoe usb. :)
Probably over current and the safety measure stopped the battery from charging. My Jackery did the same if I use more than one 100W charging a 300W battery.
I had grabbed a solar extension cable and it was faulty. got a new one when back home has worked great. Its always something right? haha Thanks for stopping by!
Which lighting did you use?
This lighting was included with the awning. (It's built in)
Great Video! I definitely need to get there. Thanks for sharing!
You'll love it!
Thank you !!
Thanks for the video man. I just installed this bumper on my JT sport with a smittybuilt winch and installed the factory fog lights. You just have to do some trimming around the plastic and drill a couple of holes to make them line up with the bracket but mines went together pretty good after that. No skid plate though and I can’t find anything that will work so far unfortunately.
Nice! We're yours the led fogs?
@@RavensEyeOffroad no they were the standard dogs that come with the sport. Everyone said only the led dogs would work but I did not want to buy new lights as I replaced the bulb itself with led bulbs so they are pretty bright. I just had to cut some of the black plastic around the fog light housing to get them to fit flush on the bumper mount then I drilled some new holes to light up and used the bolts that the bumper came with and they mounted up just fine.

Awesome video, just happened up on your channel. LBL is my favorite place to go. Just 2 hours from the house I go there often.
Awesome! We need to go back and map out the southern half. It's a good place!
@@RavensEyeOffroad what do use to map with? I will say there can be some real differences between the north and southern end. We have mapped a lot of it.
@MidTnOutdoors gaia typically. We like to mark good or bad spots etc. We had some smaller rigs with us when we went before that may not have been up for the challenge. I've heard the southern half is more difficult.
@@RavensEyeOffroad when I go solo, I am in my 2WD Titan, then I have a buddy with a Jeep and 38’s on it. So we have been on some of the more difficult trails. I know if it is a 300 road to stay away with the Titan but the rest are fair game.
@MidTnOutdoors nice! It's a fun place and I like that it's mild-wild great place to learn at. Wish it was closer I'm all the way in north eastern kentucky by ohio and west virginia. Kind of a drive
I purchased the Six Shooter about a year ago but didn't install it. Was looking for install videos and it seems to not be a good product. I'll just leave it sit in my garage collecting dust. Thanks for the video.
Eh you might give it a shot. It really just wasnt for me. It just wasnt as good as i had hoped. Otherwise could probably toss it on ebay or something.
Im jealous of your voiceovers man, any tips for sounding so professional? haha, awesome video!!
wow! I think i sound terrible haha! I struggled with having the voice tracks all sound consistent for a bit. I write a script and basically do it in one take then cut and edit them into the video. I did buy a mic mounted on an arm and made a voicebox type setup to keep sounds from bouncing around too much. I also edited the voice tracks in davinci resolve. It was quite a process but Ive been trying to step things up a notch. I am so glad you watched this I put tons of work and planning and barely got anywhere with it. lol
You had me at biscuit.
hahaha!
Dude, I love Gaia! I sit for hours tagging 2 tracks looking for new prime spots. The gps is next level too!
Def fun to tinker on!
Thanks for the video. Heading down there for the first weekend in May. Watched this to see what it might be like. I've camped many times on the OBX but never the "Crystal Coast" area. Hope the fish are biting when we are there. I know the beers will be good.
Awesome! Hope you have a blast! We still want to go back! Let me know how it goes. :)
So the rails that go on the bed have a material/ rubber part that seals? Looking at buying a used one and wondering if I need to get a new weather adhesive strip. But some install videos I watched show the rail has it built it.
Yes there is a gasket there it comes with. It is very similar to weather stripping you would use to seal a door for example.
@@RavensEyeOffroad Thanks. You ever get any leaks in the front corners? Definitely a little gap but not too bad on mine.

Helpful vid! So besides the fog lights and skid plate, others seem to fit very well right? How do you like the quality? The powder coat on the bumper?
Thanks! Yep other than the skidplate and the fog lights I like it a lot. Fit and finish was nice. The powder coat was really good and touched up easy when needed. Thanks for watching!
Thank you! I read the instructions for this bumper, and it says that I will need to remove the skid plate support bracket on the side. Wondering why is that? Is it because If I don't remove them, they will rub the bumper? But again, the question is once I removed them, how am I supposed to install an aftermarket skid plate that fits with this bumper. @@RavensEyeOffroad
@@elginwang1572 do you have a mojave?
I have a Rubicon, I think we have the same skid plate but different colors.@@RavensEyeOffroad
@elginwang1572 right. I'd guess it will rub the bumper and not allow it to fit. I had to hack mine just for it to still not fit. They are super easy to deal with though. So even if you have to put them back it's simple. :)
Could you tell me brand of heater and what size of power supply are you using in this video. I'm new at these things and this old carpenter gets confused pretty easily. Thank you. You've cleared up a lot for me on just this one video
The power supply is a ecoflow river max series. It has 576 watt hours and the diesel heater is hcalory brand. I'm glad this helped. Don't hesitate to ask ant other questions. :)
You installed antenna bracket backwards; slot goes vertical, hole for antenna, lip goes in gap between body panels.
Hhhmm I'll look at that. Thanks!
Came here to say..... "WRONG HOLE" lol.
One only has to view the videos posted on CZcams by off road vehicle users in the back country to understand the impact form these folks. They seem to think that they are privileged and can drive up any area that their vehicles can handle. The evidence is in their videos!!!
Thanks for taking an interest in this and providing some information to people who may not have ever even been to Utah. One thing to bear in mind when they mention OHV use. We're talking about off highway vehicles like quads and side by sides. This group has a hard-on for irresponsible OHV travel off of designated routes and pretty much going wherever they want. I'm pretty sure this will be less impactful to those who drive licensed vehicles not considered to be off highway vehicles. It seems to me they're targeting a particular group of users in vehicles that would not normally be used or licensed for highways and other state or local routes. If you find out differently, I'd love to know. Thanks for sharing.
What I believe they are doing is just incrimentalism. Side by sides are the easiest low hanging fruit. From folks I have talked to who have dealt with SUWA for decades (and their lawyers) tell me their goal is anything wheels banned then anything with feet. This is why they also are restricting cattle grazing. SUWA's own little saying is "access not excess". Meaning they want it severely limited. I think the side by side stuff is just a way to get their foot in the door with all this.
@@RavensEyeOffroad it's ironic isn't it? They want to close it off because of its beauty and it's remoteness but won't let anybody in there to experience it? It's ridiculousness at its best and I hope they don't succeed. Unfortunately, with liberal leadership it's liable to get past without question.
Exactly. Ill have more videos on this soon.
Sorry, you brought it on yourself. I started going there in the late 60’s. Most of the motorized were old Jeeps meandering around, staying on established roads and trails. Beginning with Jeep rental explosion in the 90’s, you could see where it was headed. Then add the side by sides by the 100’s, rented by people with no clue about tread lightly and cleaning up after yourself. They run wide open in most cases cutting across corners and making new trails. Jeeps and 4x4’s especially have to look out for them as they come around blind curves and over blind hills on the wrong side of the road. I haven’t been to Moab in 3 years because dodging the bastards has become too much. So you can say it has nothing to do with the rental industry all you want, but the truth is they are the trigger behind all this. Side by sides rut out the trails causing erosion. Cameras are everywhere these days and the rental industry has given plenty of evidence for these closure people to use. It’s not just Moab, Silverton, Ouray, and dozens more are affected by the runaway rental businesses. Media has played a big part with all the coverage of side by sides in print and online. So keep on defending the side by sides and rentals, it’ll come back to haunt you in the end.
Well I appreciate the perspective but I disagree. I've seen plenty of information about why they are thing to get things closed and it isn't about sxs's. It's about complete control over these areas to a point where nobody will be allowed there.
Also, go sit out on the upper end of Sand Flat Road and watch the side by sides go by. Observe how many are wide open sideways on the wrong side of the road in a blind curve. I’ve seen them fly through that narrow spot where the road is one lane between rocks with more than one having to make last second move to keep from hitting head on.
@@davidcrumpler5714 Look I am not here to make enemies. The issue I have with your statements are that they seem to be lumping every offroader into the same category. There are tons of people who just simply dont know how to act, its everywhere and in any outdoor activity, indoor activity. Society has been losing its ability to behave for a while now. You can watch any police interaction video, people fighting in restaurants over dipping sauce. But we don't punish all of society because of it. Its clear you have a great disdain for side by sides, probably some of it justified, but that isn't fair towards everyone else, its not fair towards those in that community who do their best to be courteous and also care about treading lightly. We cant paint with such a broad brush is what I am getting at. Instead lets work together and support those folks who want to keep things accessible to everyone and lets try and educate those who aren't exactly playing nice. Does that sound reasonable?
I haven’t implied off-roaders at all. Obviously you’re not paying attention. I think people that could have made a difference sat back and let it get out of hand. Now I’m afraid it’s gone too far. I hate to say this but maybe a failing economy and the BLM stepping forward and banning ATV’s will provide some relief. All my comments have been directed toward the rental business owners and the powers that be giving them permits to operate these businesses. I think side by sides were inspired by the early rock buggies. Add to that Fred Williams having the monthly section dedicated to ATV’s in 4WD certainly didn’t help. I wrote to him at that time, I felt his actions were misguided. Pretty sure he was fulfilling an assignment because it seemed out of character for his typical work. I’m sure there were financial benefits to the publisher for him to “test and review”. Genuine off-roaders, while there are some bad apples, are appreciative of the land and the opportunities given them. Do I think EJS, the Full Size Invasion and other special events can be a problem, certainly. But they are well managed and tend to clean up after themselves protecting their reputation. The rental companies take the money, turn you loose, hope they don’t end up in litigation and never once think about the trails and the damage done. If you want me to place blame, I lay it directly at the feet of local government and the rental companies. Originally rentals had to be delivered to trail heads. Then the lobbying began with manufacturers and local governments to make them street “ legal”. Hopefully I’ve clarified my position.
I think you and I agree on more than we disagree. I think you have valid points and I get where you are coming from. I want you to keep in mind I dont live in Utah. I live in Kentucky. So I dont know all the ins and outs. But I also am looking at who is pushing what and I dont feel that SUWA is going to stop at atv or SxS's. I feel this is just a divide and conquer tactic. Would you agree with that? @@davidcrumpler5714
You need to look up the head of the BLM Tracey Stone Manning. Utah Senator Lee called her a eco terrorist during her confirmation hearings. He also said she wanted to close lands for public use. This is the consequences of people not paying attention when people like her a nominated for these offices. You can watch her confirmation hearings, she done many crazy things over the years.
I believe it. Elections have consequences.
We live in Eastern Tennessee and have seen The National Park Service shut the gates on the secondary roads to never be reopened. What is going on out west is over the top.
Absolutely 💯! I'm going to try and dig deeper into what we can do, who to support, who to voice our concerns to and all that.
When the tread lightly and leave no trace mentality is common or even universal you can have free reign on my land. Also the BLM is becoming considerate to the values of indigenous peoples. How many traces of them do you see. They lived on the lands you are losing for hundreds of years. TAKE THE HINT
It seems it is very common. I didn't see a single piece of trash anywhere I went in Utah. Tons of groups are eager to clean up trails and make them enjoyable for everyone.
It's not the trash, it's the scarring of the landscape, especially the rock areas. Plenty of videos posted on CZcams showing the extent of abuse the area is receiving. @@RavensEyeOffroad
One bad patch spoils it for the whole. I have been to Moab many times and even from the road the North side of Moab is over run with side by sides hauling ass down the ditches along the road, cutting across the hwy and making new trails all over the place. Very different different than the street going Jeeps and rock crawling machines that made Moab the off road capital of the world to begin with. Not that some of them are not nuisances, as well. Don’t blame the horse riders, hikers, and bikers wanting a quiet safe place to enjoy the “nature” of the area.
I dont think it was the side by side folks at all. its just SUWA garnering favor through legal means with BLM to close it down. Here is a better video on just this subject from keeptrails open org. czcams.com/video/Lv7HxIfce_c/video.html
When I was there everyone had fly swatters in their pockets. Except for me. Lesson learned.

Hahaha! Hope you have a great trip. Wife says thanks! Stay safe!
The wind on that island is no joke. It was windy pretty much the entire @week or more that we were there about 17 yrs ago. My ex and I had an Armadillo tent (family tent made by Walrus - they produced very well made tents for extreme conditions). We did stake down the tent as best we could and brought coolers etc to place at corners to help hold things down. The last day we were there, a big storm was building but we got out before real bad. Tent was billowing around the coolers. Packing up was absolutely nuts and if it were a cheap tent, I'm sure poles would have broken. DO NOT go there with a cheap, shock corded walmart special. After the divorce, my ex borrowed the Armadillo for a return trip and the tent did not survive - really wish I could've gotten it back to replace poles, though. He had to weather a bad storm. He ended up sleeping in his truck with nothing but peanut butter sandwiches to eat because he couldn't get out to cook. Most of what you see on that island are fishermen camping in truck campers. Definitely more sensible than tent camping in those conditions - mainly that if you're gonna be there for a week and there's an exceptionally windy day, you can relax inside, still cook, etc. Best bug prevention on the island: stay in the wind where the bugs can't fly.
Great story! One guy I saw had a windmill to generate electricity in a giant offroad bus. Hahaha thanks for stopping by!
@RavensEyeOffroad haha! A windmill would be a great idea! Yeah, there's not as many of them, but those big old rv guys have some crazy get ups. One guy had @25+ ft long gray spray painted land yacht with a feathered stuffed crow at the top of an antenna. Of course that was many years ago... lol
