Para alguém que queira melhorar o seu vocabulário, do espanhol eu aprendi "darse cuenta", e então em português é "dar-se conta". ="realize" Um exemplo: "depois de lêr uma placa em português quando estava a visitar um jardim botânico em Tenerife eu dei-me conta de que os dois idiomas são muito parecidos" A propósito, acabei de visitar Portugal pela primeira vez. Fui a intercâmbios, usei português em muitas situações - fazer compras, pedir direcções, pedir em restaurantes, etc. Foi fixe, agora quero dominar mais deste idioma. Mas o problema mais grande foi escutar e perceber a portugueses. Foi mais fácil com brasileiros. Então mais prática é necessário.

i think an easier explanation would be that we never answer with 'yes' or 'no' (ENG: -do u have a ball? -yes / PT: -tens uma bola? -tenho)

My girlfriend is Portuguese and whenever we would talk, she would say things in her language that sounded so beautiful to me, even if it was a curse like "caralho" it would excite me. I would always be fascinated though, when she would read the word "hours" as ours and I was determined to know the reason for it. So I am learning how to speak Portuguese so I can surprise her, and also because I am tired of only saying "Eu amo-te" to her

This is great! (I'm a Spanish speaker, and I think you may have had Spanish speakers in mind when you said not to use 'lamentar' or 'sentir' when apologizing for doing or not doing something. Instead, use 'desculpa-me.' I'll try to remember that one.
