Pioneer SX-440 Stereo Receiver Introduction / Overview
Not a demonstration--no music is played as demo videos can be seen elsewhere on CZcams.
Personal note: A good-looking receiver. Often the bulbs are out, but can be replaced with ready-made LED bulbs that just screw in. I diffused the LED lenses with fine sandpaper after making this video; otherwise you will get annoying bright spots which alternate with darker spots, since the LEDs shine straight forward, like a flashlight. This can be seen in the video.
Made from 1970-1973. OTL (ouput-transformerless) capacitor-coupled power amp. 12 watts per channel continuous into 8 ohms. 3-gang tuning capacitor. Midnight black acrylic front plate. Real wood veneer; therefore you need to make sure the veneer is good, since a repair is time consuming and not easy. I got mine from eBay where the seller "forgot" to mention and photograph damaged veneer. From this series there were also the SX-770 and the SX-990.

Nakamichi 530 Overview -- Introduction -- Review

This is not a demonstration in which music is played, because the music would be recorded through the built-in camera mic and would not be an accurate reproduction. Personal note: Technically and soundwise an impressive unit. The looks can be argued about. Simply a no-nonsense unit. FM reception was excellent. There is no tuning knob; tuning is motor driven. Mine easily put out more than the ra...

This is not a music demo video in which music is played because the recording is done with a built-in camera microphone and would not be accurate. Built from 1981-82. The output is 50 watts per channel (RMS) into 8 ohms. Had an overall good sound and good FM reception. The spatial expander is a nice touch. Also comes with an AM loop antenna, not the ferrite rod type. This has to be watched for ...

Not a demo where music is played. Retail price was $275 in 1980. Rated at 30W continous per channel into 8 ohms. Does not use discrete output transistors, but rather IC power packs (STK-0039). These ICs can still be bought. Overall good sound and good looks. Comments welcome If you have one of these, had one of these, or are planning to buy one.
Marantz 2050 Tuner Review Introduction Overview
zhlédnutí 3,2KPřed 6 lety
Not a demonstration where music is played. Review/introduction of a classic tuner from 1978. Looks and sounds good. The blue lighting is pretty cool. I was impressed with the good reception. There are 2 versions of this tuner; one is the "L" version. The "L" stands for longwave. The other version has the standard AM and FM reception. These tuners are not that expensive used. The service manual ...

Really enjoyed your reviews. Would you consider selling the 530? Thanks, Warren

Sorry Warren, I sold that already for around $100. I should have kept it. If you find one, keep it. Really high quality. At the moment I'm not active on this channel, so I don't know how your comment got through, since I turned all comments off. I am finally working on a new video. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the video!! Really well done. This receiver is from 1980s... so I thaught it would have transistors... as it deserves... but no.. a little dissapointed... anyway I Love this model 👍

Thanks for commenting! It is a nice receiver though, even though it doesn't have transistors. I don't think, soundwise, there even is a difference. As far as servicing goes, it is easier to replace transistors instead of power modules; the modules aren't cheap and somewhat hard to find. But, your unit could last for decades. Keep the unit and enjoy!

@@michaelschafer6379 Cool. Dual is cool and well made--at least in my opinion. The last Dual I had was the model CS741, a direct drive turntable. I think yours is somewhat older. Have fun with your equipment and records. But watch out: I ended up having 600 records. Don't let that happen to you.

A used R-700 was the first "real" piece of audio gear I bought for myself in 1999. I sold it around 2004 but recently acquired another one for nostalgia's sake. It's interesting to note that the cover on your R-700 is more akin to the previous CR series (lighter wood with silver vent grille), whereas both of mine are a darker glossy redwood finish with black vent grille. Perhaps this was a running change in the design.

I just bought a 530 and prepared myself for recapping most of the internals. It wasent necessary, quickly realized that the 530 is a top-tier 70´s Receiver. In my opinion better than the old Harmans and certainly Marantz. Amazing... i dont like the looks though but maybe i learn to love it too. If you stumble upon a Nak Receiver 530 or 730 BUY ! These are getting rare, uberexpensive in the 70´s. An absolutely bargain soundwise. You will not look at any marantz, sansui, revox, pioneer etc ever again. Only thing i did is to adjust the idling current wich was 17 and 16 mV when ive got it and took it down to 10mV according to spec. This eliminated distorsion completley. And i have to find 3 tiny burned out diallamps wich are soldered ...

I have one of these in mint condition. Bought it off eBay in the UK for £15 a couple of years ago. The reason it's in my collection is that it's such a lovely design from an aesthetic perspective and the FM performance isn't that shabby either. Although mine doesn't have the long wave option, we still have broadcasts in the UK that use that format. In particular, BBC Radio 4 have a program called Test Match Special which is commentary of the England Cricket team's matches. So, a tuner or receiver with long wave capability still has its uses.

On mine, I noticed that the lighting for the Signal Strength and FM Stereo meters was considerably dimmer than those for the main tuning scale. Looking at photos on the web, this is a common issue for the 2050 and associated models. The obvious thing to do was upgrade to LEDs, which I did, but it still didn't completely solve the problem. After further digging, I spotted that the vellum filter sheets on each meter were heavily tarnished with age, hardly allowing any light through at all. A quick trip to my local craft store for a few vellum paper sheets and high-strength 5mm double-sided tape, plus an hour of DIY (remove main cover and front panel, pop out meters, remove old vellums, cut new vellums to size, apply tape to vellums, stick vellums to meters, reassemble) and it's as good as new. A relatively easy job but it's made all the difference. There's now even more of a "wow factor" when you press the power button.
