After a chance lunch with Mr. Buffett, I’ve dedicated years to studying what makes Warren and Charlie so successful. Although they were both blessed with exceptionally high IQs, I believe their astounding wisdom comes from reading so many damned books. Their real competitive advantage is that they’ve simply out-read everyone else. Want to be the smartest person in the room? It’s simple. Read more. It’s a truly egalitarian hack that’s available to any of us who dedicate the time.
In this weekly series, I ask authors five good questions and publish the interviews for you. My goal is to use new technologies (like the internet) to inspire us toward the older (but more thoughtful) technology of books. Sometimes we need more than 140 characters to sort things out. 😉
I hope you enjoy learning from some of the biggest thinkers out there!

5GQ: Adam Mead - The Complete Financial History of Berkshire Hathaway
In this week's episode of Five Good Questions, we're interviewing Adam Mead about his new book, The Complete Financial History of Berkshire Hathaway.
Adam Mead is CEO and Chief Investment Officer of Mead Capital Management, LLC, and founder of WatchlistInvesting.com.
His book, The Complete Financial History of Berkshire Hathaway: A Chronological Analysis of Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger’s Conglomerate Masterpiece (Harriman House, 2021) was released in April. Extras and research material can be found at brkbook.com.
Five Good Questions:
1. There’s an unbelievable amount of financial data and analysis pulled together into this book. What was the process of sorting through and organizing so much information?
2. Which decade for Berkshire was the most impressive to you?
3. Much of Berkshire’s success can be tied to insurance. What are some of your observations after deep-diving into their insurance operations for decades?
4. The effects of compounding are so small at the beginning, they’re almost imperceptible. Have you noticed any patterns that might help you detect the next Berkshire early in its formation?
5. How has writing this book made you a better investor?

Thank you so much :)
If you slow the speed to .75 it is much more understandable.
Hi Jacob/Edward, thank you this is great!
Thankyou. This guy is special.😇. I thought I had the speed at 1.75. But he just talks fast and runs syllables together.
Great questions. You did your homework here.
The thing with the low cost producers is that there is always cheaper competition that can suddenly emerge from developing markets. This doesn't work in case of GEICO and insurance business but if you think you have a cheap place to buy clothes such as Asos, there can always come even cheaper Shein, when costs are outsourced outside the country. Low cost producer is a good moat, but not in every industry. I think it does well in insurance, where you incur costs in the country where you sell, where you need government permission (such as financials). I would be very careful with that in case of manufacturers.
How to sack people for the benefit of billionaires. Shameful.
Look at India for great momentum in equities.
Agreed, get him back on for his latest book
Soon time to have him back on for his new book! Also worth rebooting this pod - especially given that you will have a better cam/mic.
Great interview!
If you only read one book on investing, Excellent Investing is the one! Mark has done a lot of research in addition to accounts of his own experiences. Very readable I couldn’t put it down. A few people I know will be getting this for Christmas.
Great stuff again. Thx Jacob
Amazing interview. Lot of wisdom distilled and many anecdotes about great men. The final part on equanimity with emotions (the handshake with every emotion that comes...) was very beautiful and Jake is such a good listener and avid learner that he let William expand all he wanted.
We literally had a presidential candidate in 2020 that ran on Automation and AI. Too bad the establishment media and the DNC blacklisted Andrew Yang. Martin has a new book coming out in June. 'Rule of the Robots.'
Catching up on my episodes of 5GQ... a great episode Jake. I recently started browsing through Marshall's book. I liked the way he laid out the discussion of capital employed. I need to go back and read the whole thing, but your question on intangibles came up in a search. His answer was good. I'm trying to reconcile Buffett's comments about looking at a business ex. goodwill/intangibles.
Jake, I just found your channel via the MOOC Mindshift! Can't wait to explore your videos
same here
Great chat gents - really enjoyed the nerding out ;)
This was loads of fun. Thanks Jake!
As a Berkshire fanatic and buffet admirer I read the book and loved it
Thank you!
Ohhh boy.... I am so impressed with the content and concept (5GQ) that I decided to buy your book.... I am more into books than kindle but unfortunately, hardcopy/paperback version is not available in India.
This is what society needs right now.
This is a very underrated book. As an investor it was so beautiful ☺️
Great work Jake!
Good interview, Jake. I think I've watched all William's interviews about the new book and 5 good questions got the best out of him. I find his work fascinating.
Great interview Jake! Thanks for letting him talk with little interruption. Those make the best talks
Great interview :) Just got Rebel Allocator on Audible btw. Also if you want a stock tip check out Helios Tower's as a play on the growth of Africa and also a deep value land play CRESY

When you doing another catch-up hike?
Great interview! I bought the book for a friend that likes to invest, but I want to get one for me.
Jake, have you read the book? If yes, how is it ?
I read every book before the interview. :) I thoroughly enjoyed it. Plan to re-read before too long.
What’s the book?
Good stuff Jake. Sharp guy. Must be cool to have him as your friend.
Have the book on Audible, listened to it last year and I'm going to want a hard copy. Great book. Thanks Jake.
excellent
Why no views!?
Interesting to watch this vid in June 2020... Also to hear this 14:04 🤔
Great interview. Matt Ridley is a great source of information and knowledge and his books are must read for anyone trying to be wise. I've been following your podcast for quite some time and I've discovered great books and great insights. I also like a lot your participation in Value after hours. I bought and read your book last year, which I liked a lot. It was a fictional reminder of a lot of austrian school explanations of the market process with wisdom from the Buffett-Munger way. Thanks and congratulation on putting it together in such an entertaining format.
I feel seen. ;) Joking aside, thank you for the nice words.
Great insight... How could you manage to take interview of all most all great investors leaving Buffett and charlie... How?
Can you tell me the name of the website he mentions @ 12.53
This Bill guy is great. You should do a regular thing with him.

Thank you.
I just discovered your channel and will definitely buy your book.
Wow, this is a gem. Surprised to see so fewer views.
I just finished his 2nd edition of deep value investing. Enjoyed it very much. The examples given were easily understood. One comment though, I will find it incredibly helpful if he can spell out some kind of framework that he used. Although in the examples, he gave a good idea of his decision making process, it wasn’t structured for a takeaway. But honestly, I still love this book and will give it 4.5 stars!
Hi your book was a great read!

Wow so much to learn from this video. Its something il watch over multiple times. Thanks for putting up guys.
