Being always “on” in public sounds exhausting.

I learned more about Pastor Pascale’s story and viewpoint today.

This was incredible podcast did not want it to end. So much great information. We need more of this to really teach leaders how to integrate this information.

It’s difficult to navigate the distinction between the minister’s personal life and the public responsibilities of pastoring. Each minister must develop relationships with a few people that don’t need anything from them. These are not people you pastor, lead, or employ. They are people who don’t need you to be perfect and accept you as a person apart from your work. They really can’t be congregants. The challenge is that the longer you pastor the more difficult it is to find those people in your own community.

It makes me sad that Pastors and leaders think, in error in my opinion, that they cant be close to those they lead. Some even end long term close friendships with fellow Christians, because they become that persons Pastor. Those are the friendships Pastors need. It is an old way of thinking to say a person you lead cant be a deep close friend as well. No reason to be lonely, it was never meant to be that way. Pastors need to be real peeps and have close friends that can handle his real peepness while still honoring his office and spiritual authority. There are many "sheep" out there that cant really fully trust a leader that is aloof and guarded by many layers of "protocols". David's mighty men shared a dirty cave with him and they guarded him, his well being and mission with their lives. I don't think they would have had that heart without the closeness and realness of that cave.
